Chapter 12 - Chapter 12; Escaping 4

"I only sleep with my mate," Kade said through gritted teeth, his hands tightening on her shoulders though he didn't push her away as forcefully as he should have. "I don't do mistresses. I don't participate in casual..."

"It's just a one-night stand!" Dakota interrupted, her breath hot against his neck as her body pressed closer despite his attempts at distance. "No strings, no expectations, no future. Just tonight. Just this."

Her voice cracked on the last word, revealing the devastation she was trying desperately to bury under physical sensation.

The scent that had been teasing at the edges of his awareness since she'd first climbed into the car suddenly sharpened into something unmistakable. Her pheromones flooded the confined space with a signature that bypassed his conscious mind entirely and spoke directly to the wolf he'd kept under strict control his entire life.

Kade's entire body went rigid as recognition slammed through him with devastating certainty.

Mate.

The word echoed through every cell of his being, through bone and blood and instinct that transcended rational thought. This broken, desperate woman seeking oblivion in his arms was his. His mate. The one he'd been waiting for without even realizing the depth of that waiting.

His wolf surged forward with violent intensity, awakening in ways it never had before, responding to her presence with desperate, possessive need that demanded he claim her immediately, mark her, make her understand what she was to him.

But Kade said nothing.

Revealing the bond now...in this moment when she was clearly running from something catastrophic, when she was using him as an escape from pain she wouldn't name...would be taking advantage of her vulnerable state in the worst possible way. She needed refuge, not complications. She needed space to breathe, not the weight of a mate bond she hadn't asked for and clearly wasn't prepared to handle.

So Kade kept the revelation locked behind his teeth even as his wolf howled in protest, even as every instinct screamed at him to claim what was theirs.

Dakota seemed to take his silence as a sign of acceptance. Or perhaps she was too far gone in her own desperation to notice the way his body had gone absolutely still beneath her, the way his breathing had changed, the way his hands had shifted from pushing away to holding on with careful restraint.

Her lips moved from his neck to his jaw, trailing kisses that grew bolder, more insistent. Her hips began moving again with that slow, deliberate grinding designed to break through any remaining resistance.

"Please," she whispered against his skin, and the word carried so much pain, so much need to forget, to escape, to feel anything except whatever was destroying her from the inside. "Please, just... help me forget. Just for tonight."

Kade's control wavered dangerously. Not because of the physical temptation...he'd resisted far more aggressive advances over the years...but because of the raw desperation in her voice. The way she was breaking apart and seeking him as her only anchor in a storm she couldn't weather alone.

His mate needed him.

Even if she didn't know that's what she was doing, even if she thought this was just a random encounter with a stranger whose name she barely knew, some part of her recognized the bond enough to seek him out. To trust him with her pain in ways she probably wouldn't trust anyone else.

Against every piece of logic and self-preservation he possessed, Kade's hands shifted from her shoulders to her waist. No longer pushing away but not quite pulling closer either. A compromise between what his wolf demanded and what his conscience would allow, between claiming and protecting.

Dakota pulled back just enough to meet his eyes, her own glassy with unshed tears and desperate hope. "If you let me have this, it's not like it will be the end of the world," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "One night. That's all I'm asking. One night where I don't have to think or feel or remember anything except..."

She didn't finish the sentence. Just leaned in again, her forehead pressing against his, her breath mingling with his in the charged space between them.

Kade closed his eyes, every muscle in his body taut with the effort of restraint. His mate was offering herself to him, broken and desperate and seeking comfort in the only way she knew how in this moment.

And he didn't want to take her...

Her lips moved from his neck to his jaw, trailing kisses that grew bolder, more insistent. Her hips began moving again with that slow, deliberate grinding designed to break through any remaining resistance.
