Chapter 210 - Truly Lowly Below

Hello, dear viewers, and welcome to today's weather forecast.

Under the influence of the high-pressure system coming in from Siberia, all of Tokyo will see typical winter conditions today—clear, cold, and crisp.

This morning, the lowest temperatures in the city center will hover around 4°C.

In the suburbs and the Tama region, it'll be even colder, with some areas dropping close to 2°C.

There'll be sunshine during the day, but it'll be the dry, cold kind of weather.

The high will only reach about 11°C, a clear drop compared to yesterday.

As for the wind, we're expecting a level-3 northwesterly today. There won't be any strong gusts, and relative humidity will be around 65%...

Tsushima Kagami lay sprawled inside the kotatsu, reading manga while listening to the pretty announcer deliver the weather forecast on TV.

Yukino had lost her usual lively energy too, curled up beside Tsushima Kagami with her paws tucked under her, dozing with her eyes squinted shut.

Every now and then, gusts of howling wind drifted in from outside.

"Honestly, if you're that afraid of the cold, couldn't you just help me with the housework?"

"Then your body would warm right up."

Yukinoshita Shizuku stood to the side, leaning on a broom, glaring reproachfully at Tsushima Kagami, who hadn't budged.

"Oh my, I already told you I'd do it later."

"You're the one who insists on rushing to finish it right now—what am I supposed to do about that?"

Without even turning his head, Tsushima Kagami flipped the manga to the next page.

Yukinoshita Shizuku wiped the sweat beading on her forehead, then glanced at the kerosene heater in the corner of the room.

She walked straight over and switched it off.

"Don't turn off my heater!"

Tsushima Kagami finally couldn't sit still. Like a worm, he crawled gloomily across the tatami, wriggling his body out of the kotatsu toward the kerosene heater beside it.

Just as he reached out to switch back on the kerosene heater Yukinoshita Shizuku had turned off, she stuck out her hand and blocked him.

"It's roasting hot in here!"

"Kagami, you've got both a kotatsu AND a kerosene heater—does it really need to be this over the top?!"

Yukinoshita Shizuku complained.

"If you're hot, take off some clothes."

"If that's still not enough, go take a bath!"

"But I'm cold!"

Tsushima Kagami flipped over like a stranded fish, lying flat on his back on the tatami, gazing up from below at Yukinoshita Shizuku—dressed in her loungewear with an apron tied over it—and protested.

"How can you be such a selfish person!"

"You're really looking down on me from up there!"

Hearing this, Yukinoshita Shizuku set down the broom in her hand and folded her arms across her chest.

"It's only ten degrees right now, and the sun's out!"

"With both a kotatsu and a kerosene heater, you're being way too dramatic."

"The kids outside aren't even wearing as much as you are."

"If you don't want to help me clean, then go out and play with the children."

"That'll warm your body right up!"

With that, Yukinoshita moved to switch off the kerosene heater again.

In response, Tsushima Kagami threw his arms around Yukinoshita Shizuku's thigh.

"Housework, sure."

"Cooking, sure."

"As long as I can finish reading today's magazine in a nice, warm room."

"I'll do anything!"

"If I didn't have my kerosene heater..."

"Watashi..."

"Don't you still have the kotatsu?"

"But inside the kotatsu, my lower half gets warm—it's my upper half sticking out that's freezing!"

"Onegai!"

"Shizuku-sama!"

Yukinoshita Shizuku looked down at Tsushima Kagami sprawled on the floor and shook her head.

"You really are groveling down there, aren't you!"

With that, Yukinoshita Shizuku turned her head and walked back into her own room.

Having saved his kerosene heater, Tsushima Kagami inched his way little by little back into the kotatsu.

He gave Yukino's head a pat, and after she let out a drowsy little meow, Tsushima Kagami finally picked up the manga magazine and began reading once more.

Whether it was his constitution paired with a touch of loneliness, or some psychological reason, who could say.

Tsushima Kagami had been deathly afraid of the cold since childhood. In a damp, chilly environment, the moment the temperature dropped below fifteen degrees, he couldn't help but fire up every heating appliance he had.

Tokyo's winters weren't all that cold, but like the south, they were damp and chilly.

On top of that, starting in December the day-night temperature swings grew larger, and even with the sun out during the day it was only around ten degrees Celsius.

It always left Tsushima Kagami feeling an inexplicable chill in his bones.

And the air conditioner at home could only cool, not heat.

Even air conditioners that did have a heating function in this era had heating capabilities that were, frankly, hard to describe.

Japan, moreover, had no central heating—except for wealthy households with underfloor heating installed.

For most families, winter days basically came down to the kotatsu and the kerosene heater.

At night, it was electric blankets and hot water bottles.

In the past, Tsushima Kagami had only ever bought an oil-filled radiator.

That thing heated slowly, guzzled electricity, and couldn't warm a room if it was even slightly large.

It was only after his transmigration that he learned this era still had kerosene heaters you fueled with oil.

Maybe because of the open flame, it not only warmed up fast, but it had a large surface on top for heating as well.

Back then, Tsushima Kagami had turned his nose up at the kerosene heater for its odd smell, and always felt it was unsafe.

Now he found it downright wonderful—even better than the kotatsu.

Just then, Yukinoshita Shizuku also came out of her room.

She'd changed out of her loungewear into a little camisole and a pair of athletic shorts.

Her plump thighs and her proud, towering peaks were on full display.

After stepping out of her room, Yukinoshita Shizuku glanced at Tsushima Kagami, still sprawled in the same spot.

Then she walked over to the kotatsu, sat down across from Tsushima Kagami, and slipped inside it.

"Why aren't you cleaning anymore?"

Feeling Yukinoshita Shizuku slip in too, Tsushima Kagami asked while flipping through his manga.

"I'm tired."

"Didn't you say you'd do the cleaning later?"

Pretending he hadn't heard, Tsushima Kagami silently kept reading his manga.

Yukinoshita Shizuku watched as Tsushima Kagami didn't so much as spare her a glance.

She bit her lip, then slid her bare foot from her side of the kotatsu up into the leg of Tsushima Kagami's pants, gripped the flesh of his calf between her toes, and gave it a hard twist.

"That hurts less than usual."

"Did you skip a meal or something?"

"Put some muscle into it!"

Tsushima Kagami had already gotten used to this bad habit Yukinoshita Shizuku had picked up lately from who-knows-where—pinching him with her toes.

At first it had really hurt.

Later, he must have gotten used to it, and now it felt off if the pressure was too light.

Still, Yukinoshita Shizuku's toes were so nimble; he'd practiced for ages and still couldn't pinch anyone with his.

"Why did you ignore me just now?!"

Yukinoshita Shizuku asked, twisting harder as she spoke.

"Me ignoring you means I'm agreeing by default."

Tsushima Kagami said offhandedly.

"No ignoring me, and no agreeing-by-default either."

"You have to respond to me properly!"

"Mm-hmm."

"No grunting at me!"

"Fine."

"And don't just say 'fine'!"

Tsushima Kagami closed the magazine and turned to look at Yukinoshita Shizuku.

"And no making a fuss over nothing!"

"Except when it's that time of the month!"

"Fine!"

Yukinoshita Shizuku smiled sweetly.

"Don't just say 'fine'!"

"Mm-hmm!"

Yukinoshita Shizuku nodded obediently.

"No grunting!"

Knock knock.

"Kagami-kun, are you home?"

Just as Tsushima Kagami was about to say something more—

There was a knock at the door.

Both of them looked toward it. It sounded like Hayase Kinue's voice.

Tsushima Kagami had no choice but to crawl out of the kotatsu.

He went to the entryway and opened the door.

"Kinue-neesan, come on in and have a seat. Did you need something?"

Tsushima Kagami looked at Hayase Kinue, who was holding a big cardboard box that looked like a delivery package.

At this point, Tsukuyomi Komoe and Douraku Utage, who'd been resting on either side, heard the commotion too, and—wrapped in their quilts—peered over from the now-open door.

"Oh my, this looks like a delivery for you, so I brought it on up."
