Chapter 26 - Chapter 26 : Mystic, Might, and Mayhem

Tik...

Under the dark night, a bloody massacre unfolded. All the black wolves, even though strengthened by a dreadful foreign power, were being overpowered by one single human.

Tok...

The smaller ones were pulverized by the lightning-fast attacks whereas the bigger ones held out for half a minute before fatally succumbing to the endless onslaught.

Tik.

For each step that was taken, a deep red liquid splashed all around. The blood pool that had formed gradually spread further by the minute as blood mist enveloped the slaughterhouse. A sight of horror and death prevailed, a distinctive metallic scent invaded the entire area, a viscous fluid stuck to the skin, fur and stone of the surroundings; and in the middle of it all, David was soaked... bathing amidst the monsters' insides.

Tok.

He was a butcher that mercilessly slaughtered all that was obstructing him. Never-ending and relentless, mighty and tireless, he killed with an unwavering calmness. Hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands... a seemingly unending wave of black wolves extended through the mountains, as if queuing to be killed, thus adding to the pile of corpses.

In this hellish landscape enveloped by a bloody mist, the world was dyed in a somber dark red.

Tik.

And at the top of it all, stood the divine being that was the cause of the bloodbath. It spectated the scene below, as if it was an entertaining show, seemingly unconcerned. It calmly watched as the unintelligent beasts swarmed endlessly towards the lone human.

Tok!

Suddenly, a malevolent aura spread amongst the wolves' stampede, gradually enveloping every single one of them. It wasn't long before that they started changing, transforming into something else, something more... demonic.

Their bodies swelled... claws and fangs growing longer and sharper, their muscles hardening. The canine head was replaced by a monstrous one, face distorted by an abnormally wide mouth, an elongated muzzle and dozens of glowing red eyes popping out, a crazed frenzy reflected on them. They had entered a state of madness.

They charged with renewed vigor and outstanding power, their sharpened claws now reached the human, and even a simple graze could tear through his skin.

David's fist could no longer vanquish as easily, his speed was no longer unrivaled, his strength no longer unmatched.

He was slowly being submerged by the sea of monsters.

And so he knew. He could not hold back anymore, he had to put his life at stake.

Stomp!

With a powerful and loud step, he shattered the ground below. With gritted teeth, he bellowed... then a dazzling blue light shone, brightening up the entire canyon. With an incredible energy, the demonic wolves were repelled, some even crushed by the absolute coercion.

David's strength thus grew severalfold, and continued growing even more by the second.

And before long, it had stabilized. By then, his appearance had slightly changed, and his presence grew more oppressive. His bulging veins were visible under his skin, and his eyes and hair shone in a blue light.

This was the power of the soul, Soul Force. When attaining a certain level of experience in one statistic, one gains the ability to transcend the power of said stat... by consuming one's own essence.

While the cost was great, so was the reward granted. It allowed one to reach new heights previously unattainable.

Now the tide had changed. In an extreme display of strength, David massacred every single one of the frenzied wolves. His punches that carried the blue light obliterated anything in its path, be it stone or animal, and in just a few minutes, only two living beings remained inside the canyon littered with corpses, and dyed in blood.

The human did not stop for a moment as he ferociously pounced on his opponent without letting him any more seconds of respite.

The fight that ensued was tremendous, the landscape could not even bear the sheer power coming from the extraordinary clash.

The monster no longer overwhelmed the man, his attacks now hurting it as they could reach directly for its essence.

Both enemies flew place to place, further away from the canyon, pushing each other back with each strike, their speed reaching humanly unattainable heights, the sound emitted shaking the earth.

Not even after a minute had passed exchanging blows, mountains were flattened, the forest devastated, and gaping craters were formed on the ground.

Then finally, the ending drew near, the fight slowly came to a close. On one side the hunched figure had its skin cracked with a low golden light seeping from the inside, while on the other side, the human panted with blue blood dripping from all over his body.

Facing each other, the two of them were on the brink of collapse, only one step away from reaching death's gate and yet, they stood unwavering.

The second one gathered all his last remaining Soul Force around his hand, preparing for a single destructive final attack. Whereas the first one raised its defenses in an ultimate last stand, surrounding itself with a deep black mist-like barrier.

Silence reigned... then suddenly, a blinding blue light covered the battlefield, before a colossal explosion resounded throughout the whole mountainous area.

Five seconds passed until silence once again came over and the light vanished as if it never was.

All that remained then were an exhausted victor, and the vanquished who wore a gaping hole on its abdomen. The indigo eyes soon faded, and the body limply fell to the ground with a small thud.

And just like that, the fight had ended. The winner stood motionless for a long moment, basking in the sunrise light, resting after the arduous battle he had experienced.

His right hand which had delivered the last strike was completely broken and swollen, moreover his complexion was pale from losing so much blood, and lastly, he didn't have any strength left to do anything.

Suddenly, there was a sound of glass breaking, and soon after that, the small clock on the defeated's left hand shattered and dissipated into dust before being carried away by a gust of wind.

It was an unexplainable event through the winner's eyes, and he did not have the will-power to think about that incongruity, so he quickly dismissed it without sparing it a thought. Furthermore, he still had to search for someone who was probably in danger.

Clearing his mind, he then nonchalantly strode forward toward the deepest part of the canyon, which was still mostly intact.
