Chapter 4 - The Things Ranma Never Explained. part - 3

Chapter Three: The Truth That Stayed Silent

The rumors didn't die.

They never did.

They changed shape instead—whispered in corners, repeated with new details, sharpened with imagination. Nerima thrived on chaos, and Ranma Saotome had always been its favorite target.

This time was no different.

The man who had accused Ranma returned three days later.

He stood outside the shopping street, voice loud, posture righteous, drawing a small crowd with practiced ease.

"That's him!" the stranger shouted. "The martial artist! He attacked me without reason!"

Ranma froze mid-step.

Akane, walking beside him, felt the sudden tension in his body. Shampoo stopped instantly, eyes narrowing.

People began to murmur.

"Again?"

"Isn't he engaged?"

"Figures."

Ranma said nothing.

Akane felt the old reflex rise in her chest—the urge to step forward, to end it quickly, to stop the noise.

But she didn't move.

The stranger smirked. "What? Got nothing to say this time?"

Ryoga arrived from nowhere, confused as always—until he saw Akane's face.

Something was wrong.

"This again?" Ryoga growled. "You lying—"

"Ryoga," Akane said sharply.

He stopped.

Ranma turned to her, surprised.

She was shaking.

"Say it," she told him quietly. "Say what happened."

Ranma looked at her—really looked—and for the first time in weeks, he didn't turn away.

"I didn't touch him," he said. "Not then. Not ever."

The stranger scoffed. "Liar!"

Akane stepped forward.

"You said he attacked you," she said. "Where?"

The man blinked. "W-What?"

"Where," Akane repeated, voice steady. "Because three people were there. And none of us saw it."

Shampoo crossed her arms. "He lie. Smell like lie."

The crowd laughed.

The man's face flushed. "I—I was alone—"

"No, you weren't," Ryoga said suddenly.

Everyone turned.

Ryoga clenched his fists. "You were yelling at a girl. Cornering her. Ranma told you to back off."

The man stiffened.

"And when you tried to grab him," Ryoga continued, "Ranma blocked you. Didn't even punch."

Silence.

Akane's breath caught.

She turned slowly toward Ranma.

"You… protected someone?" she whispered.

Ranma looked away. "Didn't seem important."

That was the moment.

The truth didn't explode.

It settled.

The crowd dispersed awkwardly. The man fled. The noise died.

But something inside Akane cracked wide open.

Back at the dojo, no one spoke.

Ranma stood in the yard, staring at the koi pond.

Akane approached him slowly, like he might vanish if she moved too fast.

"Why didn't you tell me?" she asked.

Ranma's jaw tightened. "Because you already made up your mind."

She flinched. "That's not fair."

He turned then—eyes sharp, tired. "You told me to apologize."

Her chest tightened painfully.

"I was scared," she admitted. "Of the mess. Of everyone watching."

Ranma exhaled. "I was tired of explaining myself to people who didn't trust me."

The words hit harder than any punch.

Akane's voice broke. "I should have believed you."

Silence stretched.

Then Ranma said quietly, "Yeah."

That single word hurt more than shouting ever could.

That night, Shampoo packed her things.

"You choose her," she said calmly.

Ranma looked up. "This was fake from the start."

Shampoo smiled sadly. "Fake marriage. Real feelings."

She bowed slightly—to Akane.

"You lucky," she said. "Do not waste him."

Akane swallowed hard. "I'm sorry."

Shampoo nodded once—and left.

The dojo felt lighter after that.

Still awkward. Still quiet.

Ranma sat alone on the steps when Akane approached, fists clenched, eyes burning.

"You idiot," she snapped.

He glanced up. "Here we go."

"You think staying silent makes you strong?" she shouted. "You think pushing people away makes you right?"

He stood slowly. "I thought it'd hurt less."

She shoved his chest. "Well it didn't!"

They stood inches apart, breathing hard.

"I trusted you," Akane said. "I just… didn't choose you fast enough."

Ranma looked at her—really looked.

"You don't get to realize things late and pretend it didn't hurt," he said.

She blinked back tears. "Then why are you still here?"

He shrugged. "Guess I'm stupid."

She laughed through tears—then hit his shoulder.

"Why do you always have to make me realize things like this?" she yelled.

"You big dummy!"

Ranma smiled.

Just a little.
