" I've come closer but you're a still a distance." he said in an amused tone, "You don't like my presence?"
"N– no, not that."
"Then come closer, darling."
I looked at him in wonder and hesitance.
"Shayenne, I won't bite you or something." he replied with a smirk.
I managed an awkward laugh so things wouldn't seem too serious. I gathered false courage and approached him till we were sitting close together but still at a respectable distance.
"That's more like it. So, tell me about yourself."
"Well," I stared at my fingers, "I'm engaged." I looked at Shane. His expression made me laugh . He looked at me like I had something not clean on my face.
"You, you're–"
"Engaged." I completed, laughing even more. Shane didn't seem to believe it "Is it shocking?"
"Um, just that I didn't expect that. Since when?"
"Eighteen."
His eyes widened a little.
"For so long?"
"I'm the one who asked him to postpone our marriage. We were betrothed from my birth."
Shane leaned back into his chair.
"What?? Are you serious?"
I laughed a little.
"Yeah."
He still seemed not to believe me.
"And what's the lucky guys name?" he asked.
"Josh Nelson."
"Excuse my curiousness but how old is he?"
"Thirty."
Shane stood up all of a sudden with an expression that said:
'That's it! I've heard enough to shock me already!'
I laughed at how dramatic he could be. He was playful and it made me feel a little more comfortable.
He looked down at me and scratched his head, then ended up laughing too.
"Thirty?" he asked again.
"Yep." I giggled, "Is it bad?"
Everyone one always had the same reaction which I found funny, not insulting.
"Not like it's that bad but, what the fuck? I didn't expect that."
I laughed.
"He's the only guy I've ever known or dated."
'I should shut up. Maybe I'm spilling a little too much.'
"I thought that shit of being betrothed only happened in the old days." he said, sitting by me.
"Well, it still happens today."
"Wow. You have a picture of the lucky Josh?"
"Um, yeah."
I opened my little bag and took out my phone.
"Here." I gave him the phone to look at one of Josh's pictures. He took the phone and the reaction he had was as I expected. He put a hand over his mouth then raised a brow while he stared at the picture. After a while, he turned to me.
"Um, he is mature."
I giggled a little knowing he was trying to find a compliment to give my fiancé.
"Shane, be honest. I won't be offended."
He looked at me for a very long time. Then he took a deep breath and spoke his mind.
"He looks 40, you're too beautiful and you deserve better I think. I don't mean to judge him and I'm sorry, but I hope he has a heart of gold. There, that's my mind."
I was surprised and stared at him. I didn't expect him to be that honest. I thought he would lie.
"No offense." he quickly added with a smirk.
"Um no, no. It's just, I didn't expect that but at the same time I actually did. Most people say the same." I smiled, trying to prove I wasn't offended because actually I wasn't.
"Oh, okay. Phew!" he said, reassured.
I laughed.
"Shayenne, tell me something else."
"Yeah?"
"Do you love him?"
I smiled, nervously.
"Very much."
Shane's brows shot up.
"Wow. Oh, okay. Does he treat you right?" he asked seriously.
"Yeah." I lied.
Shane stared at me as if he knew that I was lying. And I had the feeling he did.
"Shayenne, are you honest?"
"Yes, I am." I replied quickly, "Let's go so you show me the surroundings now." I had to divert. I took my phone from him.
"Alright then. Let's go." he still didn't seem convinced.
