Chapter 2 - First Day Back

Alexander Green

January 6th

"New year, new me," my best friend, Kyle says to me. "Since I'm changing myself to be the best possible Kyle Hayes I can be, I'm going to start brushing my teeth and showering once a day!" He announces.

I snort.

"You have anything to say to me, Green?" He says, narrowing his eyes at me.

"Nope. Just wishing you good luck. You're gonna need it," I joke.

"Well, thanks, bud," he says patting my back, all smiles. "I know, I know. You all must be wondering how I can take up such a hard challenge," he says to everyone walking the crowded halls. They all give him looks ranging from frowns and rolled eyes to smiles and laughs.

This is classic Kyle. He jokes around a lot. No matter how insufferable he can be at times, I still love him. We've been friends since he moved near my childhood home in sixth grade. After we graduated from high school, we decided to share a dorm together.

I look around the hall to find her, but I can't. She's probably in Math already.

I walk in with Kyle, him sitting in front of me, to find her with none other than the dick, Knox Gregory.

Oh, how I despise that man.

I see him grabbing her hand and interlacing their fingers, laying it on her desk.

Since when has this been happening? Did they talk over Winter Break? Are they dating?

I control the urge to rip his hand from hers. I storm over to my desk, which happens to be right in front of hers, and start talking to Kyle. Doing anything to take my mind off of them.

He whispers something in her ear and she giggles. Fucking giggles.

"What's got you looking so bad about?" Kyle asks, thankfully temporarily stealing my attention from her and Knox. "Is it Violet and Knox?" he whispers so they don't hear us.

I grunt, and he takes my answer as a yes because he starts talking once again, "You should talk to her. You can't just admire her from afar, never do anything about it, then expect her to run into your arms and live happily ever after."

"Okay wise guy, what should I do then," I say sarcastically.

"I don't know. How should I know?"

I groan and lay my head in my arms.

"Okay, okay. Since I'm such an amazing best friend, I'll help you with your predicament."

"You're an angel," I say sarcastically.

"I know. Anyways. What you have to do is talk to her. Say 'Hi, how are you?'. You know? Normal human behavior instead of staring at her from afar like a fucking psychopathic stalker."

"Hey! I am not staring at her!"

He laughs, "Sure, bud."

"Okay, fine. I'll talk to her after class," I give in.

"Yeah, that's good."

I don't pay attention to anything Mrs. McLaughlin says during class, my mind drifting to the person behind me. She's whispering to Knox. She's telling him about the book she stayed up until 3 AM reading.

From three years of "stalking" as Kyle calls it, I've learned a lot about Violet. For example, she loves reading books, especially smut, she likes to cook, bake, and write. She has a best friend named Emily Jones, who is dating Samantha Ellis. Emily has a twin sister named Jacqueline Jones. Violet also has an older brother in his Junior year of college.

Maybe Kyle was right to call me a stalker.

Everyone starts leaving, signaling the end of class.

I pack my bags as fast as I can, hoping to catch Violet before she leaves the classroom so I can talk to her.

"The worksheet is due tomorrow and is expected to be turned into the bin before class starts on Tuesday," Mrs. McLaughlin drones on and on about the homework. I don't pay attention to anything she says until I hear. "Oh, and before you go, Violet and Alexander, please come up to talk to me."

The whole class turns to look at both of us. I look to Violet and see her fiddling with her fingers, looking around anxiously. I want to walk over to her and put her by my side, tell her that she's okay. Kyle is smiling wide, and as I walk up to the front of the classroom, he whispers, "This is your chance. Talk to her once Mrs. McLaughlin finishes talking to both of you."

I nod in reply, and stand in front of her desk, next to Violet. I look at her, she's biting her lip to the point of pain and looking around to see if everyone left. Her face is red in embarrassment.

Why is she acting like this?

"Let's just cut to the chase, we only have five minutes of passing period. Violet," she says, turning to her, "you're going to need to tutor Alexander over here for the rest of the year."

What?
