### Chapter 5: Tethers and Tire Tracks
Three thousand miles away, in a small town in California called Beacon Hills, a torrential storm was bruising the night sky. Thunder rattled the windows of BHHS as a group of teenagers gathered in the library for Senior Scribe—a tradition of marking their initials on the shelves, cementing their place in the school's history.
Scott McCall stood before the wooden shelf, a black marker heavy in his hand. His eyes were quiet, shadowed by years of loss. He capped his marker, then reached out, gently tracing a set of faded, carved letters near the bottom corner.
*M.S.*
"You still think about him?" Lydia Martin asked softly, stepping up beside him. Her strawberry-blonde hair was damp from the rain.
"Every day," Scott murmured, his voice cracking. "Especially tonight. He should have been here, Lydia. We were supposed to do this together."
Lydia looked at the initials of Mieczyslaw Stilinski—the boy who had died to save their parents, the boy whose soul had been swallowed by a darkness they couldn't comprehend. "He's at peace, Scott. Wherever he is... he's not hurting anymore."

In the passenger seat of Alaric Saltzman's SUV, three thousand miles east, Stiles Stilinski let out a sharp, sudden gasp.
He doubled over, clutching his translucent chest as a fierce, white-hot agony flared right where his heart used to beat. The silver thread of dark magic anchoring his soul to his sleeping body in the cellar stretched taut, vibrating with a high, painful pitch.
"Stiles?"
Hope's sharp whisper cut through the dark interior of the car. She was sitting in the backseat, watching him with immediate, naked panic.
In the driver's seat, Alaric kept his eyes on the road. Next to him, Rafael was staring out the window, chewing on his fingernails, entirely oblivious to the spectral drama unfolding in the seat between them.
"I'm... I'm fine," Stiles wheezed, slowly straightening up. He rubbed his chest, staring down at his hands. They were flickering, momentarily turning completely transparent before stabilizing back into their soft, glowing form. "Just... a sudden draft. Do you guys have the AC on? Because it feels like a localized ice age in here."
"Are you sure?" Hope pressed, leaning forward, her blue eyes scanning his face. She could feel the sudden spike in his magical signature—it felt like a weeping wound.
"Yeah. Just... a phantom limb kind of thing," Stiles said, forcing his trademark smirk back onto his face, though it was tighter than usual.
He knew what it was. He could feel the echo of Scott's marker. He could feel the collective grief of the McCall Pack, mourning a boy who was currently riding shotgun in a vampire-hunter's SUV in Virginia. They were moving on. They were starting their senior year. They had written his initials on a shelf, sealing him in the past.
*Goodbye, Scott,* Stiles thought, a quiet, ancient sadness settling into his bones. *Have a good senior year.*
"We're gaining on him," Alaric announced, breaking the silence. He tapped the GPS screen on the dashboard, which was linked to a magical tracking spell Hope had performed on a map using a drop of Landon's blood. "The tracking spell says he's just a few miles ahead on Route 9. He must have gotten off the bus."
"He didn't just get off the bus, Dr. Saltzman," Hope said, her voice dropping into a cold, dangerous register. "He lied. He stole a dangerous artifact, and he played us."
"Landon wouldn't do that," Rafael insisted, leaning forward from the front passenger seat. "He's not a thief. He was probably scared. You guys don't know him like I do. He's a good kid."
"He's a liar, Rafael," Hope snapped. "And he's dangerous if he has that knife."
"Actually, the puppy-dog has a point," Stiles chimed in, turning around in his seat to look at Hope. He was sitting backward now, his ghostly knees practically pressing into Rafael's chest, though the werewolf felt nothing but a slight chill. "Landon doesn't have a magical bone in his body. He's human. So why would a completely ordinary, curly-haired human steal a highly specific, ancient French knife? Unless..."
Stiles paused, his mind spinning through the memories of the previous Dark Ones. The knife—the dagger—was a symbol of power, a key to lock and unlock terrible things.
"Unless what?" Hope asked quietly, pretending to look out the window so Alaric wouldn't think she was talking to herself.
"Unless he isn't human," Stiles said softly. "Or unless something else is pulling his strings. Magic has a way of calling out to the weak-willed, Hope. Trust me. I know."
Before Hope could respond, the SUV rounded a sharp bend in the road.
Up ahead, resting on the shoulder of the highway, was the local transit bus. It was completely dark. The headlights were off, and the side doors were warped and bent outward, as if something incredibly powerful had ripped them open from the inside.
"Oh, that's not good," Stiles muttered, sliding out of his seat and floating right through the dashboard to get a closer look. "That is definitely a classic 'monster-movie' scene. I give the ambiance an eight out of ten."
Alaric slammed on the brakes, the SUV skidding to a halt. "Stay in the car," he commanded, reaching into the back for a crossbow loaded with tranquilizer darts.
"No way," Hope said, throwing her door open. "I'm coming."
"Hope—"
"I'm the one who let him go, Dr. Saltzman. I'm fixing this."
Rafael was already out of the car, sprinting toward the bus. "Landon! Landon!"
Stiles floated alongside Hope as she stepped out into the cool night air. The smell of scorched metal and sulfur hung heavy in the wind.
"Be careful, Hope," Stiles said, his playful demeanor completely gone, replaced by the sharp, protective instinct of a boy who had spent his youth running into danger. "This isn't a normal magic vibe. It smells... ancient. And very, very hot."
"I can handle it," Hope whispered, slipping a small, silver dagger from her boot.
They approached the bus. Inside, the seats were melted. Ash drifted through the air like gray snow. There were no bodies, but the scorch marks on the walls looked like claw marks made of pure flame.
"What did this?" Rafael asked, his voice shaking as he looked around the ruined interior. "Landon couldn't have done this."
"No," Alaric said, his flashlight beam reflecting off the melted plastic of a window. "But whatever was chasing him did."
Suddenly, a low, rumbling growl echoed from the woods bordering the highway.
Stiles' spectral eyes flared. He turned toward the tree line, his vision shifting. To his ghostly eyes, the darkness of the woods parted, revealing a massive, hulking shape moving through the trees. It was bipedal, covered in thick, dark skin, and its eyes burned like hot coals.
"Hope," Stiles called out, pointing toward the shadows. "We've got company. And let's just say, she doesn't look like she's here to enroll in the Salvatore School."
A woman stepped out of the tree line. She was wearing tattered, ancient clothes, her skin charred and cracked like cooling lava. As she opened her mouth, a blast of pure, white-hot flame erupted toward them.
"Shield!" Stiles roared, though his voice was only a gust of wind to the others.
Hope didn't need the warning. She raised her hands, chanting a shield spell. A shimmering blue barrier snapped into existence just as the column of fire hit them, lighting up the dark highway in a blinding, terrifying flash.
The battle for the knife had officially begun.
