Betrayal is sweet [1]

As Soo-Min stood before her, his heart laid bare, Eunji's mind reeled, trying to process his words. He had confessed his love for her, a confession that surprised and confused her all at once. The air in the room was thick with tension, and her thoughts scrambled to make sense of the situation.

She looked into his eyes, searching for any trace of deception, but all she saw was genuine affection.

Soo-Min stepped closer to Eunji, his eyes never leaving hers. His hand reached out to lightly touch hers, the contact sending a jolt through her body.

"I fought it for a long time, tried to ignore it.", he continued, his voice now laced with a touch of desperation.

"But my feelings for you never faded. They only grew stronger." The intensity in his gaze was palpable, his love and desire for her clearly on display.

Eunji's mind whirled with conflicting emotions. This unexpected declaration of love from Soo-Min had thrown her off-balance, and she struggled to process her feelings. She was torn between the surprise and a hint of thrill at his confession, yet the lingering question of his earlier actions still nagged at her.

She never expected Soo-Min to reveal his feelings for her in this manner. Her heart thumped loudly in her chest as she tried to process the unexpected revelation, unsure of how to respond.

Could she trust his words? Could she forgive his deception? She looked at Soo-Min, her eyes searching his face for an answer.

As Soo-Min's confession hung in the air, Eunji's thoughts flicked to her strict upbringing and the strict guidelines her family had instilled in her. She remembered how her father was determined to maintain their family reputation and how he would never accept anyone who didn't meet his expectations as her potential spouse.

The image of her father's stern face and his unyielding nature filled her mind, making her question if she could ever convince him to accept Soo-Min.

She knew how disapproving they would be of their association, let alone of a romantic relationship. Doubt clouded her thoughts, her mind torn between her own feelings and her family's expectations.

Eunji closed her eyes, overwhelmed by the whirlwind of thoughts and emotions that swirled through her mind. She took a deep breath, trying to ground herself amidst the confusion.

She was acutely aware of Soo-Min's gaze on her, waiting for her response. The pressure to answer weighed heavily on her, but her mind was a jumble of conflicting thoughts and fears. She felt torn, trapped between her own heart and the expectations of her family.

And in that moment, she had no idea how to respond.

After a few moments of tense silence, Eunji finally opened her eyes, her decision made. She met Soo-Min's gaze, a mixture of sadness and determination in her eyes.

Her voice was soft but firm as she spoke, "Soo-Min, I'm sorry, but I can't accept your love. It's not that I don't have feelings for you, but my family, my traditions, and the circumstances we find ourselves in don't allow me to pursue a relationship."

She averted her gaze, the words hanging in the air between them like a bittersweet barrier, "I... I'm sorry. I can't reciprocate your feelings. I'm sorry."

Soo-Min had hoped for a different response, a reciprocated confession of love. But her words, though gentle, were clear.

Soo-Min's expression darkened at Eunji's rejection. A mix of hurt, disappointment, and sadness flickered in his eyes as he processed her words. His shoulders slumped then tensed, and his jaw clenched slightly, revealing the turmoil of emotions within him.

He had poured his heart out, laid his feelings bare, only to be rejected because of circumstances beyond his control. He struggled to maintain his composure, his voice slightly hoarse as he responded.

"I see. So it's all about your family and traditions, then?"

Eunji felt a pang of guilt as she saw the hurt and disappointment in Soo-Min's eyes. Her heart ached at having to reject him, knowing that her circumstances and family expectations were the root of the problem.

Despite the inner turmoil, she maintained her composed exterior, trying her best to keep her emotions in check. Her voice was soft but firm as she replied. "It's not just that, Soo-Min. It's complex. My family, the traditions, it's all intertwined with who I am. I can't just discard it."

"You know the expectations I'm bound by, the limitations I face. I can't simply disregard those."

Soo-Min looked away, his gaze fixed on the night sky beyond the window. His voice was flat and resigned, as if he had seen this coming all along.

"Yeah, I know. I knew it was a long shot."

Eunji instinctively took a step toward Soo-Min, trying to reach out to him, to ease the pain she had inadvertently caused. However, as she moved closer, he stepped back, putting distance between them. Their positions had now shifted, and Eunji find herself with her back to the large window.

The cityscape glittered behind her, the contrast between the beauty outside and the tension within the room felt stark.

Amidst the tension, Soo-Min suddenly spoke again, bringing up an unexpected topic, "You know, I've heard some things that your group says about you.", he said, a note of irony in his voice.

"The other day, I heard some of your group talking about you. They were saying some pretty nasty things behind your back."

"Huh?"

"They don't think you're fit for leadership. They think you're too rigid, too emotionless, and too harsh. They say you're only good for disagreeing, not for making important decisions."

Eunji's expression tightened at his words, a flicker of anger and hurt in her eyes. She had known about the whispers and gossip within her group, but hearing it from Soo-Min stung deeply. She tried to keep her voice steady, hiding the effect his words had on her.

"And I suppose you agree with them?", she asked, a hint of challenge in her tone.

Soo-Min advanced toward Eunji, closing the distance between them. His movements were assertive, his gaze fixed on her. Eunji instinctively stepped back, her footsteps slow and measured, mirroring his approach.

She tried to maintain her composure, refusing to be intimidated, but her heart rate quickened as he came nearer.

Soo-Min continued to advance, his expression firm and resolute. He stopped a few steps away from Eunji, leaving a small distance that felt more like a taunt than a gap.

He responded, his voice holding a hint of mockery, "Actually, yeah, I do. They're not wrong. You are all those things they said."

Eunji's eyes narrowed at Soo-Min's agreement with the gossip about her. She tried to keep her emotions in check, but it was difficult. The fact that he was agreeing with her critics stung more than she wanted to admit.

Her voice was almost a hiss as she replied, "And I suppose you think you know better? You think you could do a better job than me?"

"Maybe I do. Maybe I could.", he said, his voice dripping with confidence.

Soo-Min arched an eyebrow defiantly, a smirk tugging at the corners of his mouth. His tone was cocky, filled with false confidence as he responded, "I understand people, their needs and their desires. I know how to lead, how to inspire."

Soo-Min's tone softened slightly as he spoke again, but there was a cold finality in his words, "It's time for you to say goodbye.", he said, his eyes locking with hers.

Soo-Min's gesture was sudden and unexpected. With a swift motion, he pushed Eunji against the large window. The force was strong enough to cause the glass to shatter, the sound of breakage sharp and jarring in the room.

Shards of glass rained down from the shattered window, and the cold night air rushed in through the broken window.

Eunji lost her balance.

The broken window frame offering no resistance. She stumbled, the cold air from outside buffeting her, and her body lurched out of the window.

For a brief, terrifying moment, she was suspended in mid-air, the ground many stories below visible through the shattered window. Eunji's heart leaped into her throat, a mixture of shock and fear overtaking her.

She plummeted several stories, the air rushing past her, her heart pounding. The impact of the fall felt harsh and jarring, and darkness enveloped her as she succumbed to unconsciousness.
