Chapter 239 - 239: Washington Falls Under Siege

As she moved, her withered heart suddenly pulsed with a soft green glow.

She held it carefully in her hands before pressing it back into her chest. The heart, now resembling a radiant green crystal, fused instantly with her body. Its light spread through her, washing away every trace of grime.

In moments, the transformation was complete. The filthy witch was gone, replaced by a striking and dangerously alluring Enchantress.

She inhaled slowly as her strength returned. Strange yellow-green particles drifted through the air and slipped into her nostrils. She savored them, her expression sharpening with satisfaction.

Then she vanished.

An instant later, she appeared inside the Washington National Museum, standing within its storage area. Without hesitation, she reached for a decayed wooden sculpture.

Green energy poured from her hands into the object. The sculpture expanded rapidly, swelling until it nearly touched the ceiling.

When she finally withdrew her power, a towering figure stood before her. Her brother, nearly four meters tall.

He looked at her and spoke in an ancient tongue.

"I am here."

"Sister."

"Brother."

They studied each other in silence for a brief moment, something old and familiar passing between them.

Then he turned, scanning the surroundings. His expression shifted as he sensed the world beyond.

"Sister, the world has changed."

"Yes. They have forgotten us. They no longer worship us."

"What do they worship now?"

"Money. Power. Status. Machines."

"And power itself?"

"Controlled by men."

"If one has power, how can it be controlled?"

"For love. For attachment. For memories of the past. For hopes of the future. For peace. For illusions."

She paused, her voice sharpening.

"They forgot something important. If you cannot hold a blade firmly, it will cut you."

They exchanged a glance, their resolve clear.

Without warning, her brother extended his arm. From his back, molten, golden tendrils erupted outward, tearing through the museum and bursting into the night streets of Washington.

The Enchantress grabbed his hand.

"Control yourself while absorbing power. There is someone among humans now. A ruler whose strength surpasses gods."

"I understand."

"Where is his territory?"

"Gotham. Never go near it."

He considered her words, then leaped out into the city.

On a street in southern Washington, a taxi swerved wildly to avoid the erupting tendrils before being stopped abruptly by his massive hand.

He opened his palm. Lava-like energy swallowed the driver.

Moments later, he nodded.

"I know where Gotham is now. It is far from here."

"Good. We will build our domain here. This nation has no gods left. Its people abandoned faith long ago. No one will compete with us."

He remained still for a moment before speaking again.

"We must never oppose that Lord. I saw his nature through mortal eyes. He commands ash and fire. He stands at the origin of life and death. Even if we consumed the world, we would not be worthy to face him."

"Yes. We stay away from him and show respect. But if we want even a fraction of that respect in return, we must regain our strength."

Her voice hardened.

"Devour this city. Break it. Then we negotiate. If necessary, we beg for our place in this world."

She raised her arms.

Green mist burst from her body, spreading rapidly across the skyline. Buildings vanished into the swirling fog. Screams filled the air as entire sections of the city were consumed.

The mist condensed into a massive structure, rising high above Washington. Thunder and fire gathered at its peak, painting the night in their colors.

While they reshaped the city into their domain, far away in Texas, chaos unfolded within ARGUS headquarters.

Agents stormed Amanda Waller's office, only to stop in confusion. The room was filled with grotesque, writhing masses of flesh.

The team leader grimaced as he looked around, then glanced at Booster Gold, who stood nearby in shock.

"He died horribly. Every operative we had with implants, gone instantly. Years of work wiped out. Amanda made a catastrophic mistake."

He clenched his fists.

"If she is dead, we cannot even hold her accountable."

Frustration overtook him.

"Pull the surveillance footage. I want to see exactly what happened. Who could breach this facility and face those lunatics head-on? And where is her body?"

He stopped mid-sentence.

Amanda's body appeared in front of him in a flash of fire.

He jumped back instinctively.

"It's Axel. He is here…"

"Sir, that is Director Waller."

He paused, then cleared his throat and stepped forward.

Her headless body lay still, her hands folded over her chest. Between them was a letter.

Behind him, the footage finished loading.

After watching it, his expression tightened.

"The killer is Wraith. No doubt. But not in the way we expected. He took her from Texas to New Jersey, killed her there, then sent the body back."

He picked up the envelope and opened it. Inside was a letter and a five-dollar bill.

After reading it, he let out a bitter laugh.

"Because Amanda damaged his lawn, we owe him twelve thousand dollars. And this…" he held up the bill, "this is his compensation to us."

He exhaled slowly.

"Amanda underestimated him. Not just his power, but how precise he is. If he wanted, he could have taken the President just as easily."

His phone rang.

He answered immediately.

"Washington is under attack. The White House is partially destroyed. The President is safe, he is in England. The attacker matches the one your agency reported, codename Witch. Where is Amanda? She is responsible for this. Put her on the line now."

The call ended abruptly.

He cursed under his breath and pulled up satellite footage.

The screen showed Washington in ruins, torn apart by energy and engulfed in unnatural forces.

The room fell silent.

He swallowed, then spoke carefully.

"This is beyond us. None of us can handle this."

He glanced at his team.

"I have contacts in Canada. We can transfer out, maybe continue under MI6."

He looked at each of them in turn.

"Who agrees?"
