The forest was quiet, too quiet.
Ethan moved slowly through the dark, his breath steady, his senses sharp. In one hand, he held his father's sword. In the other, a small flame hovered above his palm, flickering softly, casting shadows across the trees.
The deeper he went, the heavier the air felt. The branches above clawed at the moonlight, and the underbrush rustled with unseen life.
Then, he saw it.
A pair of glowing red eyes emerged from the darkness. The Hellfang Fox stepped forward, its crimson fur rippling like smoke, metallic jaw, fangs bared, claws scraping against the earth. It let out a low, guttural growl, its eyes fixed on Ethan.
Not far off, hidden behind a thick oak, Lisa watched in silence. She kept her breathing low, her hands pressed to the bark. She had followed him this far, curious at first but now, unsure.
But what caught her off guard wasn't the demon.
It was Ethan.
He didn't flinch or hesitate. His expression shifted, he feared nothing only cold focus.
And something else.....Hatred.
It wasn't just a random hunt. There was something personal in his stare, something she couldn't explain.

[Objective: Kill a Demon]
[Target Detected: Hellfang Fox]
[Hellfang Fox: lv. 20]
A grin spread across Ethan's face. Not the smile of a child eager for glory.
It was darker, sharper, like he had been waiting for this moment for a very long time.
Lisa furrowed her brow behind the tree, confused by the change in him.
What is he really doing out here?
The Hellfang Fox snarled, baring its jagged fangs as it raised a clawed paw and swiped at Ethan.
But Ethan was faster.
In a flash, he unsheathed his sword and parried the attack with a sharp metallic clang, forcing the beast to recoil a few steps.
"Surprised?" Ethan muttered coldly, his eyes locked on the demon. "I'm not the same kid from last time."
The fox didn't wait for a second warning. It lunged again, jaws wide, aiming for his throat.
Ethan sidestepped and leapt over the beast with agile precision. As he passed above it, he slashed downward, his blade cutting across the demon's back. The fox yelped, blood misting into the air, but Ethan didn't pause.
He landed, pivoted, and dashed low, his blade slicing clean through the fox's hind legs. The demon collapsed, howling in pain, its body trembling.
And still, Ethan didn't stop.
He approached it slowly now, the firelight in his hand flickering ominously across his face. The fox writhed, trying to crawl away, but Ethan knelt beside it, calm… almost too calm.
He pressed the tip of his sword gently against its eye, his expression unreadable, then drove the blade through with brutal finality.
The demon twitched once, then lay still.
From behind a tree, Lisa stood frozen. Her wide eyes stared at Ethan in disbelief, her heart pounding. This wasn't the same boy she had once humiliated in a duel.
He was faster, stronger and colder.
And she knew without a doubt, if they ever crossed swords again... She would lose.

[Kill a Demon: Success]
— SYSTEM MESSAGE —
[Weapon Acquired: Fangpiercer]
[Item Description]
Forged from the unbreakable metallic jawbone of a Hellfang Fox, Fangpiercer is a dagger that retains the beast's savage aura. Its edge never dulls, and it emits a low, ominous growl when unsheathed. Said to strike with the fury of the demon it was born from, this weapon excels at piercing armor and resists magical corrosion.
Ethan let out a breathless laugh, a glint of satisfaction in his eyes.
"This is going to be fun," he whispered.
In his hand materialized the dagger, Fangpiercer. Its blade was sleek, forged from black metallic bone with a serrated edge. At the hilt, a strip of red, wool-like fur wrapped around the handle, remnants of the Hellfang Fox's crimson coat. The weapon pulsed faintly, alive with dark energy.
Ethan admired the blade for a moment, then commanded it back into the system. With a shimmer of light, it vanished from his grip.
Still hidden behind a tree, Lisa narrowed her eyes. She couldn't see what Ethan had been holding, only that he stood tall, staring proudly into the void as if he'd just claimed victory over something powerful.
Her confusion vanished in an instant when she heard a low, menacing growl rumbled beside her.
Her blood turned cold.
Turning her head slowly, she found herself face-to-face with another Hellfang Fox, its glowing eyes fixed on her, lips curled back over dagger-like teeth. Its presence pressed on her like a crushing weight.
She couldn't move, couldn't scream, she could barely breathe.
Then.. fwip!
A sharp stick whistled through the air and embedded itself directly in the fox's eye.
It screeched in agony and staggered back, thrashing.
Lisa blinked, her body still frozen in shock.
Lisa turned, eyes wide, just in time to see Ethan lower his hand.
He had thrown the stick.
Before she could fully process what happened, Ethan was already moving. In a swift blur, he closed the distance and drove his sword into the Hellfang Fox's chest. The demon let out a final, pained snarl before collapsing at Lisa's feet.
Ethan exhaled and turned, only to freeze when he saw her standing right there.
"Lisa?... What are you doing here?" he asked, startled. He had been certain no one saw him leave the house.
Lisa hesitated, her gaze darting from the slain fox to Ethan's face.
"Well... umm... I saw you sneak out," she admitted, avoiding eye contact. "So I followed. I just wanted to see what you were up to."
A flicker of awkwardness passed over her face. She had always looked down on Ethan—seen herself as stronger, better. But now... now she wasn't so sure.
Ethan gave a quiet sigh, glancing around the dark forest, still on high alert.
"Well, it's too late to send you back alone," he said. "Just stay close to me."
His tone was calm but serious, his sword still gripped tightly in his hand as he scanned the trees.
Lisa watched Ethan from the corner of her eye, her thoughts racing. This wasn't the same boy she had mocked five years ago. His movements, his focus, even the dark edge in his eyes, it was all different. As if he carried a deep grudge against demons... one that had been burning inside him for years.
They walked cautiously, their footsteps soft against the mossy forest floor. But as they neared the heart of the forest, a rustle erupted from the shadows.
Three creatures emerged, twice the size of the Hellfang Foxes they'd seen before. Their fur was darker, almost charred, and sharp, jagged horns curved from the center of their foreheads.

[Demonic Beast Detected: Ultra Hellfang Fox]
[Level: 30]
Ethan's eyes flicked to his system status.
[Your Level: 22]
His jaw tightened. This is bad.
Beside him, Lisa stood frozen. She didn't need a system to sense the pressure radiating from these monsters. Their bloodlust was palpable.
"Run!" Ethan shouted, grabbing her hand without hesitation. He hoisted her up effortlessly and broke into a sprint, holding her as he dashed through the trees.
The Ultra Hellfang Foxes gave chase, their snarls echoing through the night. Claws tore into the earth, leaves flew in their wake, and the scent of sulfur filled the air.
Ethan pushed his body to the limit, dodging branches, leaping over roots, until the sounds of pursuit finally faded.
He dropped to his knees, setting Lisa down gently and gasping for breath.
"Are you sure we lost them?" she asked, voice trembling. Fear was etched across her face.
Ethan stood quickly, eyes scanning the woods. He nodded once. "Stay here. Don't move. I'll be back."
Before she could argue, he disappeared into the darkness.
From a distance, Ethan spotted one of the demon foxes prowling near a tree. Silently, he snapped off a thick branch and ignited it with fire magic, turning it into a flaming spear.
Then, with practiced aim, he hurled it.
The flaming stick flew in a blur and struck the fox's back, embedding deep.
The beast howled in agony as flames spread across its fur, its roars tearing through the forest night.

— QUEST UPDATE—
[Kill All Ultra Hellfang Foxes]
[1/3 Eliminated]
Ethan stared at the glowing message, scowling. "Is this system trying to help me or kill me?" he muttered, pain sharpening his voice.
Before he could gather himself, sharp claws slashed through the trunk of the tree he was perched on. The entire structure groaned and toppled.
He leapt just in time, landing hard on his feet as the tree crashed behind him. But the Ultra Hellfang Fox was already there. Its massive claws intercepted his sword mid-swing, and in one swift motion, it struck him with a heavy paw.
Ethan flew back like a ragdoll, slamming into the side of a giant tree. Pain exploded through his body. He gasped, winded, unable to move for a moment.
"Like I said... this is bad," he coughed, spitting out blood. "They're stronger than me. Way stronger."
Desperation flared in his chest. He had no choice now, he'd have to use his fire magic.
But just as he summoned his flame, he felt a shadow from behind.
SLASH.
Pain tore down his back as a second fox swiped through him. He screamed, falling forward as claws pinned him to the ground. He struggled, blood soaking into the soil beneath him.
Memories flooded in, five years ago, that same helplessness, the same humiliation. Had nothing changed?
Then—thunk!
A stone struck the demon's head.
The fox paused, turning toward the source of the interruption.
Lisa stood in the clearing, trembling, hurling another stone with shaky hands. "Leave him alone, you creepy monster!" she shouted, her voice barely steady.
Ethan groaned, pressing a hand to his bleeding side. "God, she's dumb," he muttered. "Didn't I tell her to hide?"
The fox snarled and lunged at her.
But Ethan was faster.
He pushed through the pain, fire erupting between his palms. He gritted his teeth, summoned everything he had, and launched a massive fireball toward the charging beast.
The blast hit the demon mid-air, engulfing it in roaring flames.
Lisa fell backward as the fox crashed into the earth, howling and writhing in fire.
Smoke curled into the night sky. Silence followed.
Ethan staggered, eyes still locked on the burning creature. "Don't move, Lisa," he said, voice rough. "This fight's not over yet."
The third Ultra Hellfang Fox burst from the trees, charging at Ethan with brutal speed and deadly intent. Its crimson eyes locked onto him, fangs bared and claws tearing through the earth with each step.
"Ethan... watch out!" Lisa cried, her voice high with fear.
But Ethan was already in motion.
He raised his sword just in time to meet the beast's metallic jaw with a thunderous clash of steel and bone. Sparks flew from the impact as the force pushed him back, but he recovered swiftly, hopping out of range with grace he hadn't known he possessed.
His eyes narrowed. Faster. I'm faster. He could feel it. His reflexes were sharper. His body lighter. But speed alone wouldn't win this fight. The fox was still stronger.
He glanced at his hands, flickering embers already forming in his palm. I could end this with fire... but if I hesitate, even for a second...
No time.
The fox lunged again.
Ethan darted forward instead, closing the distance as the beast committed to its charge. With a sharp pivot and a surge of strength, he slashed his sword upward in a clean, vicious arc, straight across the demon's exposed underbelly.
The blade tore through fur, flesh, and sinew.
The fox staggered mid-leap, landing awkwardly before collapsing with a deep, guttural growl.
Its glowing eyes dimmed. Motionless.
Dead.
Ethan stood still, breath heavy, sword dripping with dark blood. The forest fell quiet once more.

Ethan felt a surge of pride as the message blinked before his eyes. Every scar, every night spent bleeding in silence, had finally begun to pay off. He stood tall, battle-worn but victorious. A smirk pulled at the corner of his lips.
"Alright, Lisa," he said, sheathing his sword with confidence. "Let's go home."
But then, an arrow flew, fast and silent towards their direction. It's speed was smooth and silent, cutting through the air.
CHUCK!
A sharp whistle. The sickening sound of flesh tearing.
Ethan froze, he turned, and time slowed.
Lisa stood with wide eyes, then crumpled. An arrow pierced clean through her chest.
"LISA!" he screamed, rushing to catch her before her body hit the ground. Blood soaked her dress, warm and fast. Her lips trembled, but no words came.
His heart pounded in his ears as he scanned the trees. That's when he saw them.
Five goblins emerged from the shadows, twisted creatures with ash-green skin, mounted on snarling Hellfang Foxes. Their ears were long, faces cruel, and their eyes glowed with a sadistic hunger. The lead goblin licked the tip of a second arrow, smirking.
Ethan's breath caught. Bloodlust, thick in the air. Crushing and suffocating.
He couldn't move.

This was the first time he'd ever gone against the system.
The first time he chose to run.
His thoughts spiraled. Not out of fear, but fury. This system… the one he trusted… had betrayed him.
Lisa coughed, blood dripping from her lips. Her trembling hand reached for his, but he couldn't even move a finger.
His eyes stung from helplessness.

From behind the trees, the goblins closed in, laughing.
And the system remained silent. Cold. Watching.
What a cruel world.
