Chapter 2 - Chapter 2.1 - The Moon and Death

"How long have I been asleep?" I asked myself, squinting at the bright sunlight coming in from outside. I carefully stood up, giving Moon, who had made himself comfortable in my lap, enough time to jump off. With an almost inaudible sound, his white paws landed on the ground as he slowly walked away.

I must've slept for hours, yet I still felt like I was lacking a few days' worth of sleep. Nevertheless, I slowly made my way to the sink to get a few sips of cold water to calm down that annoying scratching feeling I had in my throat since waking up.

"Whoa." As I took the first step, my vision went blurry. I had trouble not falling over, my hands reaching for the countertop to stabilize myself. Thankfully, my vision went back to normal just a few seconds later, but I was left with a dull headache as I gulped down an entire glass of cold water.

meow

I turned around. Right on the countertop, the white cat was sitting, staring at me. For a few seconds, I held eye contact with the cat who was looking at me… almost like it was expecting something?

The growl coming from my stomach was enough to pull me out of our little staring contest, however, and I walked back to the couch where I had left my phone.

meow — it came again from behind me.

"What? I already fed you like a few minutes ago." Moon, however, just continued to stare at me. "Cats, honestly." I shook my head, walking back over to the sink to drink some water for my… no, wait.

"Oh right, now I know," I thought. I felt like I had just forgotten something, but it couldn't have been that important. Getting that annoying headache under control was much more important right now anyway.

Slowly walking past Moon, who was still sitting on the kitchen counter, I started to walk to my bathroom, my hand never once leaving the counter to support my unsteady steps.

"I don't feel…" My right leg gave away, and I fell to the floor, barely catching myself with my arms. "...too well."

I took a deep breath, my lungs filling with air, yet I still felt like I was holding my breath. "I…" I tried to get back up to my feet, my hand reaching for the counter. I grabbed hold of nothing.

meow

I looked up. Moon was sitting on the edge of the countertop, looking down on me as my body slowly started to fail me. "What…"

"is…"

Black spots slowly started to fill my vision as I lost the last bit of strength in my body. My head hit the floor. With my view focused toward the ceiling, I was now nothing more than a passenger in my own body as the black spots grew bigger and bigger.

Silence. Except for a low hiss accompanied by an extremely high-pitched whistle.

The last thing I could remember was the sound of Moon jumping down, before he sat down on my chest, staring down into my face once again.

His beautiful blue eyes stared down into mine. His blue eyes were—were turning red. His blood-red eyes staring down on me were the last thing I could remember, together with the smell of rotten eggs entering my nose.

Then the black spots in my vision grew to fill out everything, and I was consumed by the darkness.
