Chapter 30 - Chapter 29: The Fall

[Location: The X-7 "Icarus" - Launch Tube]

"Engines green," Vesper yelled, her fingers flying across the holographic dash. "But the launch clamps are still engaged! Remote release is offline!"

"Hold on," I said.

I grabbed the manual override lever—a heavy iron bar meant for emergencies.

"This is gonna be rough."

I yanked the lever. CLANG.

The clamps released. The Icarus dropped out of the belly of the flagship into the cold vacuum of space.

Silence.

For a second, we were floating in the void. Below us was the planet—a swirling marble of blue oceans and white clouds. Above us was the war.

The Federation Fleet was burning. The Enemy Mothership cast a shadow over everything.

"They see us," Silas warned from the gunner seat. "Locking on. Three Hunter-Killers inbound."

"Vesper, give me manual control," I ordered.

"You're not a pilot!" Vesper argued. "You're infantry!"

"I was a pilot in Life #204!" I snapped. "Give me the stick!"

I grabbed the controls. The muscle memory flooded back.

Bank left. Roll. Throttle up.

The Icarus danced. Green plasma bolts zoomed past our cockpit, missing by inches.

"We can't outrun them!" Silas yelled, firing the rear turret. "Their shields are too thick!"

"We're not running," I said, pointing the nose of the ship down toward the planet. "We're falling."

"Caelum," Vesper's face went pale. "The atmospheric entry angle is too steep. If we hit the atmosphere at this speed, we'll burn up."

"Trust the math?" I asked her.

"The math says we die!"

"Then trust me."

I slammed the throttle to max. We dove straight toward the planet. The G-force hit us like a truck.

Lyra screamed.

The heat shields began to glow orange, then white. The ship shook violently.

"Hull integrity at 40%!" Vesper shouted. "30%!"

"Come on, hold together..." I gritted my teeth.

The Hunter-Killers behind us couldn't handle the stress. Two of them disintegrated in the upper atmosphere. The third pulled away.

We were alone. A burning meteor falling from the sky.

"We're coming in too hot!" I yelled. "Brace for impact!"

The blue ocean filled the viewport.

"I hate water!" Silas screamed.

"Lyra!" I reached back with my hand. "Hold on!"

Lyra reached out. Her fingers brushed mine.

CRASH.

We hit the water at Mach 1. The world went black.
