Chapter 21 - Chapter 20: The Violin of Silence

Lyra raised her hand.

The air twisted. Nanobots swarmed from the floor, condensing into a shape in her grip. A violin. But it was made of black chrome and red light.

"Lyra!" I stepped forward, holding my bleeding shoulder. "It's me! Look at me!"

She tilted her head. Her face was blank. A doll without a soul.

"Designation: Caelum. Threat Level: High. Protocol: Silence."

She raised the bow.

SCREEEEEE.

She played a single, discordant note.

It wasn't just sound. It was a physical shockwave.

"Get down!" I shoved Vesper behind a console.

The sonic blast hit me like a sledgehammer. BOOM. I flew backward, smashing into the wall. My vision went white. The spear in my shoulder shifted, tearing muscle.

"Caelum!" Vesper screamed.

I rolled to the side as Lyra played another note. The floor where I had been standing disintegrated into dust.

"She's using resonant frequencies!" Vesper yelled over the noise. "She's matching the vibration of matter to shatter it! Don't let her hit you!"

"I can't hurt her!" I roared, scrambling to my feet.

Lyra floated toward me. She looked... bored.

"Your heart rate is elevated," she droned. "Allow me to stop it."

She raised the bow for a finale.

I had no choice.

"Ouroboros!" I screamed. "Overdrive!"

My metal arm screamed as I poured every ounce of energy into the servos. I didn't attack her. I charged at her.

She played the note. The air rippled.

I took the blast head-on. My armor shattered. My skin tore. My eardrums burst, blood running down my neck.

But I kept running.

I closed the distance. Five meters. Two meters.

She looked surprised. A flicker of humanity in those red eyes.

"Why?" she asked. "Illogical."

I tackled her.

I didn't punch her. I wrapped my good arm—and my metal arm—around her in a bear hug. I pinned her arms to her sides so she couldn't move the bow.

We crashed to the floor.

"I got you," I wheezed, blood dripping from my nose onto her silver hair. "I got you, Lyra."

She struggled. She was strong, enhanced by the suit.

"Release me. Contamination imminent."

"Remember!" I screamed into her ear. "Remember the rain! Remember the coffee! Remember me, you stupid girl!"

The red light in her eyes flickered.
