Chapter 36 - The World Chooses a Side

News traveled faster than fire now.

Screens across cities showed two faces:

JUVY — "TERRORIST SIGNIFICANT"

MAXRUELL — "DUSTFALL WARLORD"

People argued in bars.

On rooftops.

In bunkers.

"She saves people."

"He keeps order."

"They're both monsters."

"They're gods."

Juvy saw it on a broken tablet in a refugee truck.

She turned it off.

"I don't care what they think."

A woman beside her whispered, "They're sending hunters."

Dustfall didn't wait for hunters.

It rebelled.

A section of the market refused to bow.

Men tore down Red King posters.

A boy threw a rock at Maxruell's symbol.

By night, shots were fired.

Maxruell arrived alone.

"Leave," he said.

A man shouted, "You're no king!"

Someone fired.

The shadow didn't block it.

It redirected.

The bullet went through the shooter's own throat.

The crowd screamed.

Fear chose again.

Juvy's convoy reached a canyon pass.

Too narrow.

Too quiet.

Serah's voice echoed from the cliffs.

"You walk into traps so beautifully."

Gunships rose from behind rocks.

Anti-Significant weapons charged.

Refugees scattered.

Juvy ran forward.

Crystal shields slammed up.

Explosions shook the canyon.

She screamed, "RUN!"

Lasers cut through crystal.

She felt something tear in her side.

Blood ran.

She stayed standing.

Soul light erupted.

She lifted the canyon floor itself.

Rock crushed the gunships.

The sky fell.

Silence came.

Refugees stared at her.

Not with gratitude.

With fear.

A man whispered, "She's worse than him…"

Juvy closed her eyes.

In Dustfall, Maxruell felt it.

Not the fight.

The shift.

The stone burned.

She's becoming legend too,

the voice whispered.

Not your kind.

He punched the throne.

"Shut up."

A boy approached him.

"You gonna protect us from her too?"

Maxruell froze.

"What?"

"They say Bright Sister's killing armies now."

Maxruell looked away.

"They're lying."

But the voice smiled.

That night, Cain spoke to both of them.

To Juvy through Serah:

"You break cities to save people.

That makes you dangerous."

To Maxruell through the stone:

"You kill to keep peace.

That makes you necessary."

The world listened.

The twins didn't hear each other anymore.

Only echoes.

High above the planet, satellites adjusted.

Targeting systems locked onto two names.

PROJECT SIGNIFICANT: TERMINATION

Mother Cain folded her hands.

"Let the children choose what they become."
