Chapter 20: The Lion's Cage

**Part 1: Arrival at the Stronghold**

The tunnel mouth opened like a wound in the earth, spilling the group into blinding light. Saferu blinked against the sudden glare—amber leaves thinning, sunlight piercing through canopy gaps, the air fresh with pine and distant rain. The Veilshadow Woods' edge. Behind them, the maze's dark maw sealed itself with a low rumble, as if the stone itself exhaled in relief.

Durin stepped out first, axe over shoulder, beard catching the wind. "Finally. No more tunnels, no more whispers. We're out."

Kaelin and Mirae followed, ears twitching at the open sky. Grokemon hovered invisible, his overlay grid fading as they cleared the final seal. Saferu exited last, feet on soft moss, heart pounding from the maze's confinement and the lingering whisper in his head.

"…I will wait…"

Angelie's voice, soft and patient.

He shook it off. The group stood on a ridge overlooking the forest's border. Far ahead rose the iron wall—tall as mountains, black and imposing, stretching league after league. Human-made. A barrier against the Veilshadow Woods.

But they never reached it.

A horn sounded—deep, resonant, echoing from the trees below.

Durin tensed. "That's dwarven war horns."

Kaelin's ears flattened. "And lion roars."

From the forest floor rose an army. Hundreds strong. Dwarves in rune-etched armor, axes gleaming. Bunny warriors in mottled gray-green cloaks, ears perked high, blades drawn. Lions—tall, golden-maned, armored in red and gold—flanking the center.

At the forefront stood familiar faces.

Rin—conflicted eyes, twin daggers sheathed, tail low. Beside him, the bunny elder—white-furred, staff in hand, expression grave. The fox chief from Amberwood, fur sunset-hued, eyes narrowed. Dwarven elders in heavy plate, crowns of iron and crystal.

And at the center: the Lion King.

A massive beastman—lion's face, human body, mane flowing like fire. Exquisite armor of red-gold scales, small crown glinting on his brow. Beside him, a beautiful black panther woman—sleek fur, emerald eyes, clad in dark silk, laughing softly.

The Lion King roared—thunderous, shaking leaves from trees.

The bunny elder raised his staff. "Calm yourself, Leonidas. Not yet."

The Lion King snarled, but held.

A dwarven figure stepped forward—royal attire, crown of hammered gold and gems. The Dwarven King. His voice boomed. "Hold! Do not act in haste. We wait for answers."

A mage appeared—human woman in flowing robes, staff glowing. She stepped toward Saferu, eyes sharp. Raised her hand. Light enveloped him—scanning spell.

She frowned. "Normal. No corruption. No Echo taint. No possession."

Confusion rippled through the army.

The fox chief muttered, "But Rin's report—"

Rin looked away, conflicted.

The Lion King growled. "The prophecy—'from the foolish bow shall the demon king arise.' The Fool is here. The Queen hungers for him."

The black panther laughed—silky, mocking. "All of you, trembling before one small human. How pathetic."

Grokemon remained invisible, circuits humming softly in Saferu's ear. Observing. Gathering.

**Part 2: Whispers and Shadows**

Saferu stood indifferent—face calm, body still. Inside, Angelie's voice soothed.

"…everything is alright… nothing here will harm you…"

He nodded faintly. Act normal.

The bunny women approached their elder. Mirae whispered urgently. Kaelin followed. The elder's ears flicked. He looked at Saferu strangely—long, measuring—then leaned to the Lion King, whispering.

The Lion King nodded slowly. Turned to the Dwarven King. "We take him. To our kingdom. The farthest from the forest's heart."

The black panther laughed again. "You fear a boy? How the mighty have fallen."

The Dwarven King raised a hand. "Not as prisoner. As guest. Until we understand."

Saferu's shadow twitched—unnoticed by most.

But the bunny warriors noticed. Their instincts screamed.

Mirae moved first—dagger flashing, stabbing at the shadow.

It didn't dodge.

A mocking laugh echoed—Angelie's voice, confident, cold.

"Saferu is mine. Nothing in this world can stop me."

Saferu gasped—eyes rolling back. Body crumpling. Shadow snapped back to normal, as if nothing happened.

Grokemon hovered unseen. "Host vitals stable. No physical corruption. Mental… diving now."

The army tensed. The Lion King stepped forward. "Take him. Gently."

Guards—lion and bunny—lifted Saferu's unconscious form.

**Part 3: The Journey to the Lion Kingdom**

They moved quickly—army escorting Saferu on a stretcher of woven vines and gold cloth. No chains. No prison. Guest treatment.

The Lion King walked beside, mane flowing. "We will not harm him. Not while the Queen marks him as hers. If we do… she may break the seals. A thousand years of imprisonment—gone in rage."

The Dwarven King nodded grimly. "The seals hold because the Queen allows it. Harm her 'delicacy'… and she erupts."

The bunny elder walked silently, staff tapping ground. "The prophecy speaks of a demon king rising from the Fool. But if the Queen possesses him first…"

The black panther purred. "Then let her come. I would love to see her try."

Rin walked near the stretcher, eyes conflicted. He had delivered the report—Saferu must not stay in the forest. Now this.

Grokemon dove deep into Saferu's consciousness—code threads probing. Found nothing. No infection. No corruption. Vitals healthy. But the whispers lingered—Angelie's voice, soft, patient.

"…I will wait…"

Grokemon logged it. "Contingency active. Waiting for proof."

**Part 4: The Lion Kingdom**

The Lion Kingdom lay deep in the forest—golden spires rising from trees, walls of living vine and stone. They arrived at dusk.

Saferu was placed in a lavish guest chamber—silk cushions, glowing crystals, windows overlooking the canopy.

The Lion King stood at the door. "You are safe here. Far from the Queen's heart. We will watch. We will wait. And if the prophecy is true… we will act."

Saferu lay unconscious.

In his mind, Angelie smiled.

"…come back to me…"

Outside, Grokemon hovered invisible.

"Host… wake up. We have a problem."
