Chapter 22 - CHAPTER 22 — The Veil Takes Two

The Veil pulsed like a living heartbeat.

Silver and gold light rippled across its surface, bending the air around it. Lira stood at its edge, Kael's hand wrapped firmly around hers. His grip was steady, but she could feel the tension beneath it — the fear he refused to voice.

Serin watched them with weary eyes, their staff dim but still glowing faintly. "Once you cross, the Veil will reshape itself around your bond. Stay close. If you drift apart, it will separate you."

Kael tightened his hold on Lira. "Not happening."

Lira managed a small smile. "You say that now."

He shot her a look — half warning, half something softer. "I mean it."

The Veil shuddered.

A cold wind swept across the cliffs.

Serin lifted their staff. "Go. Before he pulls more power from the other side."

Lira took a breath.

Kael stepped closer, his forehead brushing hers. "I'm with you."

She whispered, "Always."

Together, they stepped into the Veil.

The Veil Between Worlds

Light swallowed them instantly.

But this time, Lira didn't fall alone.

Kael's hand stayed in hers, anchoring her as the world dissolved into swirling gold and silver. The Veil stretched around them like a vast ocean of fractured stars, each shard reflecting a different version of reality.

Kael exhaled sharply. "This place… it's alive."

"It's memory," Lira said softly. "And possibility."

Kael glanced at her. "And danger."

She nodded. "Especially danger."

The Veil shifted beneath their feet, forming a path of floating stones. Lira stepped forward, but the moment she did, the light around them flickered.

A whisper echoed through the air.

"Astra…"

Kael stiffened. "Who was that?"

Lira swallowed. "The Veil. It remembers me."

Kael's jaw tightened. "Then it can learn your name is Lira."

She squeezed his hand, warmth blooming in her chest despite the cold light around them.

They walked deeper.

The Veil responded to their presence — the stones rearranging, the light bending, the air humming with energy. Lira felt her mark pulse in rhythm with the shifting world.

Kael glanced at it. "Does it hurt?"

"No," she said. "It feels… awake."

Kael nodded slowly. "Good. We'll need every advantage."

But the Veil wasn't done testing them.

A ripple of darkness spread across the path ahead.

Kael drew his blade instantly. "What now?"

Lira stepped closer to him. "The Veil reacts to emotion. Fear. Memory. Pain."

"So this is yours?"

"No," Lira whispered. "This is his."

The darkness thickened, forming a shape — tall, sharp, familiar.

The prince.

Not fully formed, but a shadow of him, carved from the Veil's memory.

Kael stepped in front of Lira. "Stay back."

The shadow-prince tilted its head, its voice echoing like a broken mirror.

"You cannot run from me."

Lira's breath hitched. "It's not real. It's just a memory."

Kael didn't lower his blade. "Real enough."

The shadow-prince stepped forward.

Kael moved instantly, swinging his sword through the figure — but the blade passed through it like smoke.

The shadow laughed.

"You think steel can touch me?"

Kael growled. "I'll find something that can."

Lira stepped forward, her mark blazing. "Kael — let me."

He hesitated.

Then stepped aside.

Lira lifted her hand.

Golden light surged from her mark, striking the shadow-prince. The figure shrieked, its form fracturing into shards of darkness.

But before it vanished, it whispered:

"He waits for you at the center.

And he is not alone."

The shadow shattered.

Silence fell.

Kael turned to her, eyes wide. "Lira… that power…"

She lowered her hand slowly. "It's stronger here. The Veil amplifies it."

Kael stepped closer, his voice low. "Just promise me you won't face him alone."

She met his gaze. "I won't."

He brushed a thumb across her cheek — a soft, grounding touch. "Good."

The Veil shifted again, forming a new path — darker, deeper, leading toward a distant pulse of red light.

Lira's heart tightened. "That's where he is."

Kael took her hand again. "Then that's where we go."

Together, they stepped forward.

The Veil closed behind them.

And somewhere in the shifting light, the prince opened his eyes — sensing her return.
