Chapter 5 - CHAPTER 5 — WHISPERS OF THE VEIL

The forest grew darker as they ran.

Not just from the night — but from something older, deeper, woven into the roots and branches themselves. The air felt heavier here, thick with the scent of moss and ancient secrets. Lira's breath came in sharp bursts, her legs aching, but Kael didn't slow until they reached a cluster of towering trees whose trunks twisted together like braided stone.

Only then did he stop.

"Here," Kael said, releasing her hand. "We rest for a moment."

Lira leaned against a tree, her chest rising and falling rapidly. Sweat clung to her skin despite the cold. Her heart still pounded with the echo of horns and the memory of soldiers' voices.

"Are we safe?" she whispered.

Kael scanned the shadows, his hand resting lightly on the hilt of his blade. "Safe enough. For now."

Lira swallowed hard. "Where are we?"

Kael's gaze flicked upward, toward the canopy where moonlight barely filtered through. "The Outerwood. Few villagers come this far. They say spirits roam here."

Lira shivered. "Spirits?"

Kael nodded. "The Veil is thin in this forest. Strange things happen. People hear voices. See visions."

Lira's pulse quickened. "Visions… like memories that don't belong?"

Kael's eyes sharpened. "You've seen something?"

Lira hesitated. The truth felt dangerous, but lying felt impossible.

"When I close my eyes," she whispered, "I see flashes. A world made of metal. Lights that float. A boy calling my name. And then… darkness."

Kael studied her, his expression unreadable. "That's not a memory from this world."

"I know," she said softly. "But it feels real."

Kael stepped closer, his voice low. "Lira… souls don't usually cross the Veil with memories intact. If yours did, it means something pulled you through."

Lira's breath caught. "Pulled me?"

Kael nodded. "Or sent you."

A chill ran down her spine.

Before she could respond, a faint whisper drifted through the trees — soft, distant, almost like a sigh.

Lira stiffened. "Did you hear that?"

Kael's hand went instantly to his blade. "Stay behind me."

The whisper came again, clearer this time. A voice — neither male nor female — drifting like wind through leaves.

Lira…

Her blood froze.

"That's my name," she whispered.

Kael's eyes narrowed. "Don't answer it."

But the voice came again, closer, curling around her like smoke.

Lira… child of the fallen star…

Lira's heart hammered. "What is that?"

Kael stepped in front of her, his stance protective. "A spirit. Or something pretending to be one."

The voice shifted, becoming sharper, more urgent.

You do not belong to this time.

You were sent back.

You must remember.

Lira's knees weakened. She clutched Kael's arm for balance.

"Make it stop," she whispered.

Kael tightened his grip on his blade. "Show yourself!"

The forest fell silent.

Then — a flicker of light.

A figure emerged between the trees, cloaked in shimmering silver mist. Its face was obscured, its form shifting like smoke caught in moonlight. Lira felt her breath catch in her throat.

Kael stepped forward, blade raised. "Stay back."

The figure didn't move closer. Instead, it lifted a hand — long, delicate, glowing faintly.

Starborn child… the voice echoed, though the figure's lips never moved. The threads of time are unraveling. You must awaken.

Lira shook her head, trembling. "Awaken what? I don't understand!"

The figure tilted its head, as if studying her.

You carry two lives. Two memories. Two destinies.

Only one will save this world.

Kael growled, "Speak plainly."

The figure ignored him.

Seek the ruins beneath the moonlit cliffs.

There, the truth waits.

There, your past and future meet.

Lira stepped forward despite herself. "Who are you?"

The figure's form flickered, its edges dissolving like mist.

I am the Seer of the Veil.

And you… are running out of time.

The light dimmed.

The figure vanished.

The forest fell silent again.

Lira stood frozen, her heart pounding, her mind spinning.

Kael lowered his blade slowly. "That wasn't a spirit."

Lira swallowed. "Then what was it?"

Kael turned to her, his expression grave. "A warning."

Lira hugged herself, feeling suddenly small. "It said I don't belong to this time."

Kael nodded. "It also said you were sent back."

Lira's voice trembled. "But why? For what?"

Kael hesitated — then placed a hand on her shoulder, steady and grounding.

"We'll find out," he said. "Together."

Lira looked up at him, surprised by the certainty in his voice.

"Why are you helping me?" she whispered.

Kael's jaw tightened. He looked away, as if the truth was something he wasn't ready to face.

"Because," he said quietly, "I think your fate is tied to mine."

Lira's breath caught.

Before she could speak, a distant shout echoed through the forest — soldiers again, closer than before.

Kael's eyes hardened. "We need to move."

Lira nodded, fear tightening her chest.

But as Kael took her hand and led her deeper into the forest, she couldn't shake the feeling that something had shifted.

The Seer's words echoed in her mind.

Two lives. Two memories. Two destinies.

And for the first time, Lira wondered if her rebirth wasn't an accident…

…but a mission.
