Chapter 41 - Chapter 34: Exams and prom

Author pov:

Monday morning.

Section E was louder than usual.

Which wasn't surprising.

Ci-N was still trying to convince everyone that Operation Date Investigation had been a success.

Ci-N: We gathered valuable information.

Jay: You got chased.

Keifer: You hid behind a bush.

Ci-N: Tactical bush.

Jennie: If I hear the words "tactical bush" one more time—

The classroom door slid open.

Sir Alvin walked in carrying a folder.

Almost immediately, the room quieted down.

Almost.

Sir Alvin: Good morning, Section E.

Class: Good morning, Sir!

Sir Alvin placed the folder on his desk.

Sir Alvin: Before we begin today's lesson, I have two important announcements.

Everyone looked up.

Even David finally put his phone away.

Sir Alvin cleared his throat.

Sir Alvin: First...

Your final examinations will begin in exactly two weeks.

The room instantly exploded.

Felix: TWO WEEKS?!

Drew: WE'RE DEAD.

Josh: I STILL DON'T UNDERSTAND HALF THE LESSONS.

Jennie: We noticed.

Calix: Can we delay them?

Sir Alvin: No.

Ci-N: Worth asking.

Sir Alvin smiled.

Sir Alvin: These exams will determine your final grades, so I expect everyone to review and prepare.

He looked directly at Ci-N.

Sir Alvin: Especially those who believe confidence can replace studying.

The class slowly turned toward Ci-N.

Ci-N: Confidence has gotten me this far.

Jennie: Barely.

The class laughed.

Sir Alvin waited until the room settled again.

Sir Alvin: My second announcement...

After your final examinations, our school will be holding its annual Prom Night.

For a second...

Nobody reacted.

Then—

The room erupted.

Felix: PROM?!

David: I'M BRINGING MY CAMERA!

Rory: THIS IS GONNA BE INSANE.

Calix: Is there food?

Sir Alvin: Yes.

Calix: Best announcement today.

Sir Alvin chuckled.

Sir Alvin: More details will be given after your examinations.

Until then...

Focus on passing first.

The class answered with a very unenthusiastic—

Class: Yes, Sir...

The lesson somehow continued.

Though very few people were actually thinking about math anymore.

Everyone's minds were occupied by one of two things.

Exams.

Or prom.

When the bell finally rang—

The classroom instantly became noisy again.

Groups formed around the room.

Jennie, Josh and Yuri were already talking about study schedules.

David was wondering how many batteries he'd need for his camera.

Calix wanted to know if there would be unlimited food.

Jay closed her notebook.

Jay: Two weeks...

Keifer sighed.

Keifer: Guess we're actually going to have to study.

Jay: That's unfortunate.

Before either of them could continue—

A loud voice echoed through the room.

Felix: GUYS!

Everyone turned.

Felix stood dramatically on one of the classroom chairs.

Jennie: Get down before you break something.

Felix ignored her.

Felix: I HAVE JUST REALIZED SOMETHING.

Ci-N: Here we go.

Felix threw both hands into the air.

Felix: WE SINGLE PEOPLE ARE GOING TO BE ALONE AT PROM!

He immediately grabbed Jake by the shoulders.

Felix: WE'RE GOING TO SUFFER TOGETHER, BROTHER!

Jake looked uncomfortable.

Very uncomfortable.

He slowly removed Felix's hands.

Jake: Uh...

Sorry, bud.

Felix blinked.

Felix: What do you mean "sorry?"

Jake smiled awkwardly.

Jake: I actually have a girlfriend.

Silence.

Complete silence.

Ci-N dropped his pen.

David lowered his phone.

Even Jennie looked surprised.

The entire classroom froze.

Felix stared at Jake like he had just betrayed the laws of nature.

Drew's jaw dropped.

Ci-N blinked a few times, completely stunned.

David slowly lowered his phone.

Then—

Felix: SINCE WHEN?!

Jake rubbed the back of his neck.

Jake: A few months now.

Ci-N: WHO IS SHE?

Jake: Jasmine from Section B.

The room became quiet again.

Jay's smile disappeared.

Keifer's expression hardened slightly.

Jasmine.

Section B.

The girl who had tried to convince Keifer that Jay had cheated on him.

The same girl who had spread rumors until the truth finally came out.

For a brief moment...

Neither Jay nor Keifer said anything.

Section E noticed.

Jennie glanced at them before looking back at Jake.

Jake quickly raised his hands.

Jake: Hey... what's wrong?

Jay hesitated for a moment before glancing at Keifer, then back at Jake.

Jay: It's just... Jasmine.

Jake frowned slightly, waiting for her to continue.

Jay: She was the one who tried breaking mine and Keifer's relationship.

Her voice softened a little.

Jay: So when I heard her name, it just brought all of that back.

Jake's expression changed immediately.

Jake: Oh.

He looked genuinely sorry now.

Jake: I didn't know it still affected you like that.

He scratched the back of his neck awkwardly.

Jake: But... I get it now.

Jake gave her a small, reassuring smile.

Jake: Don't worry. She's not like that anymore, and I wouldn't be with her if I didn't trust her. But if it makes you uncomfortable, I won't bring her up again.

Jay looked at him for a moment, then slowly nodded.

Jay: Thanks.

The awkward silence faded.

Until Felix sighed dramatically.

Felix: Great.

So I'm actually alone.

He looked around the room.

Then his eyes landed on Maya.

A grin slowly spread across his face.

Felix walked over.

Without warning—

He gently grabbed Maya's wrist.

Felix: Congratulations.

You're coming with me to the lonely people club.

Maya looked down at her wrist.

Then up at Felix.

Without saying a word—

She carefully slipped her hand free.

Felix sighed dramatically.

Felix: Not again...

Maya smiled.

A small smile.

One that immediately confused everyone.

She stepped a little closer.

Maya: Felix.

Felix: Yeah?

Maya: Instead of complaining...

Why don't you just go to prom with me?

...

Nobody spoke.

The classroom fell completely silent.

Ci-N's jaw dropped.

David looked like he'd forgotten how to blink.

Rory looked between the two of them.

The entire room froze again.

Ci-N: ...Did Maya just ask Felix to prom?

Drew: ...I think she did.

Felix: ...

Maya folded her arms.

Maya: Well?

Felix blinked once.

Twice.

Three times.

His face slowly turned bright red.

Felix: Wait...

Are you serious?

Maya nodded.

Maya: Unless you don't want to.

Felix immediately shook his head.

Felix: NO!

Realizing how that sounded, he quickly corrected himself.

Felix: I mean—

YES!

I MEAN—

YES, I WANT TO GO WITH YOU!

The classroom exploded.

Ci-N: HE DID IT!

David: SOMEONE WRITE THIS DOWN!

Rory: I'VE NEVER SEEN FELIX SPEECHLESS!

Jennie: Miracles really do happen.

Felix was still trying to process what had just happened.

Meanwhile Maya looked surprisingly calm.

Almost amused.

Jay leaned toward Keifer.

Jay: Didn't see that coming.

Keifer chuckled.

Keifer: Neither did Felix.

Across the room—

Ci-N was already pretending to officiate the occasion.

Ci-N: Section E officially has another prom pair!

Felix: Shut up.

Ci-N: Never.

Two weeks until finals.

Prom after that.

And if today had proven anything...

It was that Section E was going to make both events far more chaotic than they needed to be.
