Chapter 10 - THE VICTORY THAT BURNS

The name of the challenge appeared on the central monitors at exactly 8:00 a.m.

INTERCLASS CHALLENGE

MODE: Direct confrontation

CLASSES INVOLVED: E vs C

VISIBILITY: Total

SCORE: Multiplier

A murmur ran through the atrium.

Class E against Class C wasn't a challenge.

It was a demonstration.

Kael understood immediately.

They're pushing me forward, he thought.

I can't stay invisible anymore.

Class C awaited them in the tactical arena.

Uniforms neat.

Posture confident.

Smiles that didn't reach their eyes.

Their leader stepped forward.

"Class E?" he said, in an almost gentle tone.

"You've made progress."

Silence.

Rik gritted his teeth.

Tor lowered his gaze.

Mira took a deep breath.

Kael observed.

He didn't speak.

Lyra was in the stands with Class D.

She saw them enter.

She saw Kael.

His name hadn't been announced, but his face had.

Too many eyes.

Too much attention.

They're waiting for me to fall, he thought.

The challenge was divided into three phases.

PHASE 1 – TERRITORY DOMINATION

A modular map. Zones to conquer. Points in real-time.

Class C moved with military precision.

Class E hesitated.

Rik looked at Kael.

"Say something."

Kael spoke.

One sentence.

"Lose the east zone."

Rik stared at him.

"That's the one worth the most."

"For now."

Rik hesitated. Then nodded.

They retreated.

Class C smiled. Advanced.

Too much.

The terrain shifted.

PARTIAL COLLAPSE

Class C lost two members.

Kael didn't smile.

PHASE 2 – DIRECT CONFLICT

Drones. Combat simulations. Forced contact.

Tor was struggling.

Rik was pushing.

Mira was fast, but isolated.

Kael intervened.

Not with force.

With positioning.

He placed himself where fighting wasn't necessary, but blocking was.

Class C began to lose rhythm.

Their leader watched them.

"Who's that?" he asked.

No one answered.

Lyra clenched her hands.

If he keeps going like this… he'll rise, she thought.

And me?

PHASE 3 – DECISION

A final choice.

Save a simulated member in danger

or

capture the last high-scoring zone.

Class C went for the points.

Kael stopped.

"Tor."

Tor looked at him.

"Go."

Tor hesitated.

"We'll lose."

Kael stared at him.

"No."

Tor obeyed.

They saved the member.

HIDDEN BONUS ACTIVATED

Class C froze.

They didn't know.

The final score exploded on the screens.

VICTORY: CLASS E

By the smallest margin.

An unreal silence fell over the arena.

Then… murmurs.

Then… voices.

Then… names.

Kael's name.

Rik confronted him immediately after.

"You could've said it earlier."

Kael looked at him.

"If I had said it, they would have understood."

"Understood what?"

Kael answered quietly.

"That we weren't losing."

Lyra descended from the stands.

"You won."

Kael nodded.

"Yes."

"Now you'll rise."

Kael looked at her.

"Maybe."

Lyra lowered her gaze.

"I have to rise."

Silence.

For the first time, they weren't on the same path.

Up above, Maera spoke in a low voice.

"It was inevitable."

Arden stared at the data.

"No," he said.

"It was controlled."

Maera pressed her lips together.

"Then it's worse."

That night, the ranking updated.

Class E: stable

Class C: declining

But Kael's profile…

SYSTEM NOTE:

Performance inconsistent with class affiliation.

PROMOTION CONSIDERATION: ACTIVE

Kael turned off the bracelet.

Now they know, he thought.

Next time, winning won't be enough.

In the dark, Valencrest recalibrated.

And when a system recalibrates…

someone gets crushed.
