Chapter 31 - Ghost Hunting

Damian knew he wouldn't have long before Javier returned to continue with his interrogations so he had to move as quickly as possible, which would be rather difficult given he was currently filled with holes and bleeding over the floor, the guard may have released him from his confines but he was in no state to fight back just yet. Picking up the guard's weapon he headed over to the door in order to better examine the locks from the inside, it was simple enough with just a few large metal bolts holding the door in place, too tough for any regular person to break free but for someone like him it would be simple.

Javier was walking down the echoing corridors still wiping the fresh blood of his hands with a small hand towel as he was making his way back towards Damians prison, the underground chiller was clearly old and abandoned with the systems long offline and yet the air was still frigid enough to give Javier the chills. Jasper was far more cooperative than Damian was but that didn't mean he was being let off any easier, in fact the armour he wore made him an excellent punching bag.

However as he approached the old doors he quickly rushed forward and uttered a curse under his breath leaving his accompanying guard behind, the doors locks had been broken from the inside and the guard he had left was laying unconscious on the middle of the floor and worst yet there were no signs of Damian to be seen, it was as if he had simply vanished into the air itself.

Javier had learnt what his Aspect was from Jasper a few days prior so he had been on alert but this was far beyond what he had expected, how had he managed to escape? The only reason he left a guard here at all was to make sure he didn't try anything, he didn't trust the man to be alone, he was older and more than likely had more than a few aces up his sleeves. He looked down at the guard, thinking about how he would have to dispose of him later after he woke up, he could just do it now, but there was more to be gained if he made a big show and dance out of it, a public statement to everyone else who had the bright idea to fail him.

The thing that caught his attention however was the fact the cattle's weapon was missing and more than that he couldn't sense it anywhere nearby, he had started to grow used to his strange connection his his nails and the fact that one had gone missing made him feel uneasy, as if a part of him had been erased without a trace. Closing his eyes he focused deeply, trying to feel that connection he had to all his creations, attempting to form a map of where each one was in relation to him, he focused his mind and suddenly he felt his body reverberate, the [Knights Burden] may have had only one ability but its utilities seemed endless when paired with his Aspects power.

Suddenly the feelings of some of the nails grew stronger in his mind, their power and potency growing in correlation to their surrounding darkness much like their master, he could sense the nails lodged deep inside his subornates with such ease, noting where each of them were at the given time. The ones inside Jasper indicated that he hadn't been freed just yet and somewhere above, running through the halls of his kingdom, a vague sense could be felt.

It was muddled as if his own senses were being repelled away from themselves, it was strange and imprecise, closer to a guess than an exact location, and the more he tried to focus the stranger the connection, no matter what he tried he couldn't pin it down perfectly but he knew what it was, or more accurately who, it seemed like the nature of Damian's abilities were even stranger than maybe even he understood. There was no time to waste. He looked to the ceiling above, considering if he could simply jump through the reinforced alloy by this point, turning away, he ran out the room and gave his guard one simple command.

"Inform everyone else to enforce a complete lockdown immediately! Make sure every entrance and exit are sealed immediately, we cannot let him escape!"

Not waiting to hear his guards' response he continued to rush forward hoping to find the point where Damian was running too before he managed to escape, passing more guards on the way and giving them the same instructions as the first he quickly exploded onto the main floor running towards the hazy location of his prisoner.

Javier wasted no time in hunting down the escapee, using one of the enchantments of the [Cloak of the Abyss] to propel himself further whenever his feet reached the ground after each use, he was quickly closing the distance between them and could almost Damians sweet sweet blood on his hands, he wouldn't kill him just yet though, for his insubordination an example had to be made, he would make Jasper watch as he drained the life from his companions eyes.

The feeling brought a smile to Javier's face as he approached the nebulous cloud from which he knew Damian was hiding, even with his senses obscured he knew he was drawing close he could almost taste it, licking his lips he continued on hoping to catch his prey. However no matter how hard he looked around he couldn't find him, and blindly attacking the air would do him little good so he created a different plan.

Bringing his arms up in front of him he felt his skin burn hot, it was the same every time he used his aspect, the sensations of hot metal ripping through his skin despite the fact it left no visible trace upon him, suddenly small metal spikes were growing through his arms and growing with each passing second. He looked around, failing to lock onto the exact spot his senses were pulling him towards as he performed a fan-like motion with his arms as the nails flew from his skin. Easily pierced through the metal infrastructure around them focusing his senses on each of them as they flew waiting for one to hit its mark but what he did not expect was a force to push on the back of his skull.

Damian had run into the factory floor with the hopes of finding a section of the floor he could use as a temporary hideaway until his body recovered from his injuries to the point he could fight, however somehow Javier was on his trail, he didn't know how but the young man knew where he was, or at least had a vague sense of his direction. The scratching pains forming on the insides of his body had grown more intense suddenly as he was making his escape, he had managed to remove the external nails as he ran but the ones he suspected to be inside of him could not be so easily removed.

All he could do was run for now but even that was taking everything he had, and even worse was the fact that his captor was hot on his trail, he watched as the man approached with terrifying swiftness as his cloak bellowed with every burst of speed. Damian still carried the guards weapon with him as his primary source of defence, but he knew he couldn't hold on to it forever, his body was already past what it should be capable of and every extra piece of weight he carried only added to his burden.

He was running as Javier caught up to him, he panicked and froze for a moment as the man stared straight at him, he soon turned however and began looking around the immediate area instead, Damian's pale face calmed a little after realising he couldn't actually see or sense him, at least not to an exact degree however any level of detection put him on edge. Would he be able to avoid this hunt for at least the few days he needed to rest, he doubted it. He needed a distraction.

He watched as Javier raised his arms ahead of him as small spikes of metal rose from his skin, sending painful reminders to all the wounds of Damian's body, he was confident that was his actual ability, to manifest nails from his body and that everything else came from the two memories he wore. It was an eerie sight to say the least but provided him with a great opportunity, moving behind the man as he prepared his attack Damian raised the spear and threw it with all his might into the back of the [Knights Burden].

The sudden force caused Javier to stagger forward as a loud cracking noise could be heard, his concentration was broken as a sudden jolt hit his senses, he could feel a nail lodged into the back of his head, or more accurately into the back of his memory, causing a crack to form in its surface but he was otherwise unharmed. However with his concentration broken he failed to keep track of the muddled cloud of senses as it faded away, dislodging the nail from the skull he looked down at it, examining the guards weapon in his hand, blood had stained its tips and small fragments of bone now dusted its surface. He tried reaching out to his senses once again but to no avail, the muddled senses he had been following had vanished as the power of his helm had seemingly diminished from the blow, Damian had escaped for now.
