Caitlyn sat in her study, surrounded by the web of evidence she had meticulously woven. All threads—the shipping manifests, the suspicious Enforcer patrols, the gaps in the city's surveillance—led to a single, toxic intersection: Marcus and Silco.
From a hidden compartment in her desk, she retrieved a vial of swirling purple liquid.
"This is what Vi brought me," Caitlyn said, her voice steady. "A concentrated dose of Shimmer. In a court of law, this isn't just a chemical; it's a smoking gun."
Heimerdinger, perched on a chair nearby, nodded in solemn approval. With this evidence, he was confident he could force a vote of no confidence against Marcus and move the Council to dismantle Silco's operations before Shimmer turned Piltover into a mirror of Zaun's worst nightmares.
However, they weren't alone. Councillor Kiramman had been watching the presentation from the doorway, her face unreadable until she finally stepped into the light. Her reaction wasn't the political outrage Caitlyn expected; it was the raw, sharp fear of a mother.
"Caitlyn! Have you completely lost your mind?" her mother shouted, the mahogany walls of the estate ringing with her anger. "Investigating the Captain of the Enforcers? Associating with Undercity criminals? Marcus and Silco are dangerous men, Caitlyn. Do you have any idea what they do to people who poke their noses into their business?"
"I've told you a thousand times," Lady Kiramman continued, "you have a place in this city. A safe, prestigious place. Why must you persist in this... this madness?"
Caitlyn had spent her life being the "Perfect Kiramman," but the grit of the Undercity and the fire in Vi's eyes had changed her. She didn't shrink back this time. She stood tall, meeting her mother's gaze with a steel that hadn't been there a month ago.
"What's wrong with danger, Mother? I am an Enforcer!" Caitlyn's voice rose to match her mother's. "I didn't take that badge to be a decoration for the Kiramman family crest. I took it to protect Piltover! If the danger is coming from inside the station, then that is exactly where I need to be!"
"You're telling me to look the other way while our city rot from the inside? I became an Enforcer to maintain order, not to facilitate a cover-up for a murderer and a chem-baron!"
"You—!"
Lady Kiramman choked on her words, stunned. It was the first time Caitlyn had ever directly defied her. Heimerdinger, sensing the shift in atmospheric pressure, slunk behind a velvet sofa, his large eyes peering out cautiously. To him, the laws of thermodynamics were a breeze compared to the complexities of human family dynamics.
"Caitlyn," her mother said, her voice dropping to a low, serious tremor. "Think about what you're saying. Everything I have done—every restriction, every transfer—was to keep you alive."
"I have thought about it," Caitlyn replied, her gaze unwavering. "And I've decided that fulfilling my duty is worth the risk. I am going to finish this case, with or without your blessing."
The room fell silent. Lady Kiramman looked at her daughter—really looked at her—and saw a woman she no longer recognized but could not help but respect. She let out a long, weary sigh.
"Our daughter has grown up," the Councillor whispered, more to herself than to anyone else. "She has her own light now. I can't keep her in the shade anymore."
Caitlyn blinked, her defensive posture faltering.
"Very well," Lady Kiramman said, standing straight. "If you are determined to walk into the fire, I won't let you do it alone. As a Councillor and as your mother, you have my unreserved support. Whatever you need—funding, political cover, or a seat at the table—it's yours."
"Mother?" Caitlyn's voice softened. She lunged forward, throwing her arms around her mother in a rare, desperate hug.
"If you're going to do this, Caitlyn, do it perfectly," her mother whispered, stroking her hair. "Now, let's look at this like professionals. We have the Shimmer, we have the records... but we lack a witness. We need someone who can stand before the Council and testify to Marcus's betrayal."
Caitlyn didn't hesitate. "Vi."
Lady Kiramman frowned. "The girl you... 'borrowed' my seal to release? The one currently back in Stillwater?"
"She's the reason we have any of this, Mother. She knows the Undercity better than anyone. She's the only witness Marcus can't intimidate."
"Then we go to Stillwater," Lady Kiramman said with an imperious nod. "And this time, we won't need to forge any signatures. I will handle the Warden personally."
Heimerdinger emerged from behind the sofa, looking relieved. "Well... it seems my tactical advice is no longer required. I shall return to my lab."
Caitlyn walked the Professor to the door, but as they reached the carriage, she stopped him. "Professor, I have to know. How did you find out about Marcus and Silco? You're a man of the Academy; you don't frequent the Sump-levels."
"Unless," she added, her detective's brain clicking into gear, "your two star students told you. Chen and Powder."
Heimerdinger sighed, his ears drooping. "Nothing gets past you, does it? Yes. They provided the initial intelligence. They saw the corruption firsthand."
Caitlyn looked toward the darkening horizon. "And do you know, Professor, that my evidence suggests they were the ones who triggered the explosion at the Hexgates?"
Heimerdinger shifted uncomfortably. "Their intentions were noble, Caitlyn! They were trying to stop a Shimmer shipment. They are brilliant minds—geniuses who could revolutionize this city. I thought it better to keep them under my wing, to guide them, rather than throw such potential into a cell."
"But people died, Professor," Caitlyn said, her voice tinged with a deep, ethical conflict. "Innocent workers. How do we balance their brilliance against the lives they took?"
"In Piltover," Heimerdinger said sadly, "the Council often weighs the value of a person by what they produce. If Chen and Powder's inventions save thousands, the Council will call them heroes and erase their crimes. It is the cold math of progress."
Caitlyn watched the Professor's carriage pull away, feeling the weight of the city on her shoulders.
Deep in the bowels of the prison, the heavy iron door of Vi's cell creaked open. The Warden stood there, looking significantly less arrogant than usual.
"You've got some powerful friends, inmate," the Warden grunted, stepping aside. "You're being released. Again."
Vi stood up, rubbing her bruised knuckles, her eyes narrowing as a familiar tall silhouette appeared in the hallway, flanked by a woman in the ornate robes of a Councillor.
"Hey, Cupcake," Vi rasped, a tired but genuine smirk breaking across her face. "Miss me?"
