Jinx kept walking toward where Fenris had run. The fire behind her was still burning, casting long shadows through the trees, but she did not look back. Her focus was ahead, on the trail of broken branches and deep footprints in the snow that her husband had left behind.
She thought about how she was still alive. How she had survived his poison and his fire.
She had known he would try to kill her. The man she married was predictable in his cruelty. So when Fenris smiled at her during the toast, when he handed her that glass of wine with such false tenderness, she was ready.
Edith and Daliah, her loyal servants, had obtained the antidote. They had slipped it into her mouth when the servants carried her "lifeless body" to the car. The poison had done its work—the black blood, the collapse—but the antidote had done its work too. By the time the driver poured the fuel, she was already recovering.
