Chapter 7 - Something Else

Chapter 7

James was halfway down the street when it happened. Nota sound, not a warning, just pressure. The air tightened around him like an invisible grip. His breath hitching for reasons he couldn't explain. His body reacted before his mind did, he twisted sharply to the side. Claws tore through the space where his throat had been. James barely registered the shape that landed behind him before another came from the front. Too fast, too coordinated. This wasn't like thugs from the restaurant. This wasn't human.

He raised his arms just in time. The impact rattled his bones, boots skidding across the pavement as he absorbed the blow. The thing recoiled instantly, already moving again. James frowned, that shouldn't have happened. He lunged forward and caught the attackers wrist midday strike. The grip felt wrong, dense, corded wifh muscles far stronger than any man's. He twisted hard. Bone snapped. The creature screamed, a raw, animal sound that echoed ofd the buildings. James drove his elbow into its ribs sending it flying into a brick wall with enough force to crater sfone.

Before it hit the ground, something else slammed into James's side. Pain exploded through him as claws ripped across his torso he staggered, breath knocked from his lungs. The strike wasn't wild, it was precise, controlled, predatory. James turned, heart pounding. Three of them now, moving in a loose circle, watching, learning. " This isn't mugging," James muttered. One rushed him low, James kicked out, shattering its knee. Another came high at the same time, claws flashing. James blocked, felt metal hard talons scrape across his forearm and felt the wounded lose almost instantly. The creature froze, something did James. He glanced at his arm, unbroken skin, no blood. The realization hit him like ice. These things weren't just strong, thry were something else, apex predators . James moved first, he grabbed the nearest attacker and drove it head first into the pavement. The impact cracked asphalt. The creature didn't rise. The remaining two hesitated.

The hesitation cost them. James closed the distance in a blur, fist landing with terrifying precision. One flew backward into a parked car caving in the door. The other tried to retreat and stopped. A presence stepped forward. The Alpha. James felt it instantly. The difference, the weight. This one didn't attack. It observed him wifh eyes that burned with intelligence rather than rage. "You adapt quickly," the alpha said. James exhaled slowly, muscles tight. "You are not human." "" No," the Alpha agreed. " And you are not ordinary." Understanding settled in. This wasn't execution. It was an evaluation ." You sent them to see what I could do," James said.

The Alpha inclined its head slightly. " And now we know." James mrt its gaze, unflinching. " Know what?" A faint smile touched the creature's lips, " That you are dangerous." The Alpha stepped back, shadows swallowing its form. The others followed, retreating without another sound. Seconds later the street was empty. No bodies, no blood, no proof. James stood alone under the streetlight, chest rising and falling. His hands were steady but his thoughts weren't. This wasn't the world he thought he lived in. And tonight something far older had taken notice of him

James remained where he was long after the streets returned to its uneasy stillness. The city slowly exhaled distant traffic resumed, a stray cat darted across the road, a window slammed somewhere far above. Yet something had changed. The night no longer felt empty. It felt aware. James flexed his fingers testing the calm that had replaced the adrenaline and wondered how close he'd come to being overwhelmed. The realization unsettled him more than the fight itself. Whatever those creatures were, they had not come to kill him. They had come to measure him. As he finally turned and walked away, he sensed it clearly, this was not an ending but an invitation. And somewhere in the dark, eyes that did not blink were already watching, waiting for the next move he will make.
