The archive room smelled of old paper and the particular silence of spaces that held too many secrets.
I found Felix there at his usual station, surrounded by the organized chaos of forty years of pack history, and knew immediately that something had broken in him.
His hands were shaking as he sorted documents, a tremor I'd seen before but never this severe.
His eyes were red-rimmed, swollen, the evidence of tears he'd tried to hide. And when he looked up at me, I saw the fear there—not of discovery, not of punishment, but of something deeper. The fear of knowing something that should have been seen sooner, that might have changed everything if only he'd been braver, faster, less afraid.
"Felix." I kept my voice soft, careful, the way Vera spoke to wounded wolves in the kitchen at four in the morning.
"Ronan said you asked for me. That it was urgent."
