Chapter 76 - Chapter 75 – By Choice, Not Blood

Timeline: Three years before the main story

Location: Kamado Home — Mountain Slopes

POV: Split (Akira / Tanjiro / Nezuko)

---

Akira

Night — Forest Perimeter

The demon was weak.

Starving. Newly turned.

Akira ended it cleanly before it could reach the village path. No sound carried beyond the trees. He wiped his blade, listening.

Wind.

Owls.

Human breathing.

The Kamado house sat just downhill.

Safe, he judged.

This was the third mission in the area this month. Not coincidence — Kagaya had noticed the same thing Akira had.

This place mattered.

He sheathed his sword and moved toward the faint glow of lantern light.

---

Tanjiro

Evening — Kamado House

Tanjiro was splitting wood when he sensed it.

Not danger.

Presence.

He turned before the knock came.

"Akira-san!"

Akira stood at the edge of the yard, cloak dusted with frost.

"You're improving," Akira said. "You noticed earlier."

Tanjiro beamed. "I did? Really?"

Akira nodded once.

That was enough praise to make Tanjiro straighten his back for the rest of the night.

---

Inside, Mrs. Kamado bowed deeply.

"Thank you for watching over this area," she said. "We've felt safer lately."

Akira shook his head. "It's my duty."

Nezuko peeked out from behind her mother — then stepped forward boldly.

"You're the sword man!" she declared.

Akira crouched to her height.

"And you're loud," he replied.

She gasped — then laughed.

"I like you!"

"…That's unfortunate," he said calmly.

Tanjiro choked on a laugh.

---

Nezuko

Afternoon — Yard

Akira fixed the broken fence with quiet efficiency.

Nezuko watched closely.

"You're fast," she said.

"You're observant," he replied.

She puffed up proudly.

The other children gathered soon after. Someone brought a ball. Someone else dared Akira to play.

He refused.

Then Nezuko handed him the ball.

"…Fine," he said.

He did not smile.

But he played.

When Nezuko tripped, Akira caught her instantly — reflex sharp even without a blade.

She looked up at him.

"Big brother Akira," she said without thinking.

The words landed softly.

He set her down gently.

"…Don't call me that," he said.

She tilted her head. "Why?"

He paused.

"…Because it means something."

She grinned. "Good."

Tanjiro

Late Evening — Behind the House

Akira stood with Tanjiro beneath the trees.

"No blade," Akira instructed. "Just breathe."

Tanjiro focused.

"In through the nose," Akira said.

"Out through the mouth. Don't force it."

Tanjiro copied him.

The rhythm settled.

"Again," Akira said. "When you lift. When you walk. When you rest."

Tanjiro nodded seriously. "I'll remember."

Akira studied him.

"You protect your family instinctively," he said. "That's strength already."

Tanjiro swallowed. "I have to."

Akira placed two fingers lightly against Tanjiro's chest.

"Then never let your breath break when you do."

Akira

Night — Rooftop

The village slept.

Akira watched from above, blade resting beside him.

A demon crept near the river path.

He was gone in a flash — silent, precise, unseen.

By the time Nezuko stirred in her sleep, it was already ash.

Akira returned before dawn.

Mrs. Kamado had left food wrapped neatly by the door.

He didn't take it.

But he stood guard until sunrise anyway.

---

Closing

Akira did not stay long enough to become family.

But he stayed long enough to matter.

A boy learned to breathe without fear.

A girl chose a brother not by blood — but by trust.

And in the quiet mountain nights, the Sun walked softly,

so the fire beneath that roof could grow in peace.
