Chapter 50 - Chapter – 50 The Season That Does Not Wait

July, Meiji 35 (1902)

Age: Akira & Mitsuri — 12 years, 1 month

---

Summer did not arrive slowly.

It struck.

Heat pressed down on Azabu from the moment the sun rose, air thick enough to taste. Cicadas screamed from the trees, and even shadows felt warm.

For Akira and Mitsuri, it marked the same thing.

The start of rapid growth.

Akira felt it first in the mornings.

He woke before dawn as usual—but now his body ached. Not from injury. From change. Muscles felt tight, bones sore in a deep, unfamiliar way, as if something inside him was stretching beyond yesterday's limits.

He stood in the clearing, gourd secured, breathing already steady.

Total Concentration Breathing — On Demand.

Still not constant.

But closer.

He inhaled.

The gourd screamed immediately—pressure climbing faster than ever before.

"Great Sage: Alert—physiological development spike detected. Hormonal and muscular growth accelerating simultaneously. Strength and lung capacity increasing at an abnormal rate."

Akira clenched his jaw.

"…So it's starting."

"Affirmative. Recommendation: training volume adjusted downward while intensity remains controlled."

Akira nodded.

He raised his sword.

---

Hinokami Kagura — Continuous Sequence (Five Forms)

This time, the transitions were smoother.

Cleaner.

Where strain had once flared, now there was space. His body accepted the load, adjusting instinctively as breath surged and released in rhythm.

The fifth form ended—

—and Akira was still standing.

Chest rising and falling steadily.

No knee to the ground.

No shaking.

He stared at his hands.

"…That was easier."

Not because the forms were weaker.

But because he was stronger.

From the shade, Mitsuri watched—eyes wide, breath unconsciously deepening.

Her own body had changed too.

She felt it when she moved—longer reach, stronger legs, an elasticity that bordered on unreal. Food vanished faster than ever, yet she never felt heavy or sluggish.

When Akira finished, she stepped forward without thinking.

"I want to try," she said.

Akira studied her carefully.

"Only if you stop when it feels too easy," he replied.

She nodded seriously.

Mitsuri inhaled.

---

Love Breathing — First Form: Shivers of First Love

The movement bloomed effortlessly, warmth spreading through her limbs.

---

Second Form: Love Pangs

Her rotation widened—faster, smoother.

---

Third Form: Catlove Shower

She chained the motions together without pause.

Her breath did not stumble.

Akira's eyes widened slightly.

She continued—

---

Fourth Form: Love Whirlwind

A new movement—her body spinning lightly, blade tracing a wide, wrapping arc. The motion felt instinctive, born from her flexibility rather than force.

She stopped suddenly, eyes shining.

"…I didn't plan that," she said breathlessly.

Akira exhaled slowly.

"Great Sage: Confirmation—subject Mitsuri Kanroji has entered accelerated physical development. Neuromuscular adaptation extremely high. Risk of overextension present if unchecked."

Akira stepped closer. "That was four. Stop."

She nodded immediately—though she looked disappointed.

They sat together, resting in the shade.

"My body feels strange," Mitsuri admitted. "Like it's always full of energy."

Akira nodded. "Mine feels… heavier. Like it's settling into itself."

Two kinds of growth.

Same season.

As July progressed, the changes became undeniable.

Akira's strength climbed rapidly—lifting loads that once required effort with casual ease. His gourd training intensified sharply, pressure tolerance rising at a pace that forced him to replace gourds weekly.

Mitsuri's stamina became borderline frightening.

She trained longer, recovered instantly, and still bounced with energy afterward—yet she listened when Akira told her to stop.

That mattered.

One evening, as the cicadas sang, they sat on the porch steps sharing chilled barley tea.

"…Do you think it's okay that we're growing this fast?" Mitsuri asked quietly.

Akira thought of Great Sage's warnings.

Of attention.

Of the world beyond Azabu.

"…As long as we grow carefully," he said. "And together."

She smiled, leaning back on her hands. "Together, then."

The air shimmered with heat.

Bodies changing.

Breaths deepening.

The season did not wait.

And neither, it seemed, did fate.
