Chapter 46 - Chapter – 46 Two Breaths, Different Paths

November, Meiji 34 (1901)

Age: Akira & Mitsuri — 11 years, 5 months

---

By November, the cold no longer asked permission.

It settled into bones, into joints, into breath itself.

For Akira, the chill became a tool.

Cold air sharpened inhalation. Forced discipline. Revealed weakness instantly.

Before dawn, frost clung to the grass as he tightened the gourd straps once more. This one was newer—thicker than the last, reinforced at the seams. Even so, it protested the moment he breathed.

Total Concentration Breathing — High Output.

Not constant.

Not yet.

A controlled surge.

His lungs expanded powerfully, ribs flexing under pressure that would have left him gasping months ago. Now—he endured.

"Great Sage: Lung elasticity and oxygen transfer efficiency increasing rapidly. Estimated physical parameters approaching those of a trainee twice your age."

Akira steadied himself.

"…Too fast?"

"Response: Accelerated, but stable. Growth curve remains within survivable limits due to continuous adaptation and rest discipline."

He exhaled, then raised his sword.

---

Hinokami Kagura — First Form: Enbu (Dance)

The motion ignited warmth instantly, heat blooming beneath his skin like a furnace stoked carefully.

---

Second Form: Hekira no Ten (Blue Heavenly Spiral)

The cold vanished.

Steam rolled from his shoulders.

---

Third Form: Retsujitsu Kō (Raging Sunlight)

A sharp, decisive slash that cracked the frozen ground beneath his feet.

Akira halted—chest steady, breath unbroken.

Three forms no longer felt like a limit.

They felt like a baseline.

"Great Sage: Reassessment—three-form integration now sustainable. Proposal: introduce fourth form next cycle under controlled conditions."

Akira lowered his sword.

"Not yet," he whispered. "Let it settle."

From the edge of the clearing—

Mitsuri breathed in.

And something changed.

She stood barefoot despite the frost, eyes half-lidded, shoulders relaxed. Her inhale was soft, deep—longer than before—and when she exhaled, her body moved.

Not copying Akira.

Not mirroring him.

Her step curved.

Her arms followed, flexible and flowing, blade tracing an arc that bent rather than cut straight.

Akira froze.

She's combining it.

Breathing and motion—aligned instinctively, not through theory.

Mitsuri's body loved the breath.

Her stamina spiked immediately, warmth flooding her limbs without strain. Movements that once looked playful now carried rhythm, continuity—style.

She stopped suddenly, startled.

"…Akira?" she asked. "That felt… different."

He approached slowly. "What did you change?"

"I didn't mean to," she said, confused. "I just breathed like you—then my body did the rest."

Akira studied her carefully.

No tremor.

No strain.

No backlash.

Only a faint glow of warmth in her cheeks.

"Great Sage: Analysis—subject Mitsuri Kanroji exhibits exceptional muscular flexibility, circulatory efficiency, and stamina. Her physiology naturally harmonizes with breathing techniques."

Akira swallowed.

Unusual… doesn't begin to cover it.

"It suits you," he said simply. "But don't push it yet."

She nodded immediately. "Okay."

No argument.

She trusted him that much now.

As winter deepened, the gap in Akira's growth became impossible to ignore.

He ran faster than older boys.

Lifted heavier loads without effort.

His recovery time shortened to minutes.

Even the doctor noticed.

"…Your body's catching up too quickly," the man muttered one evening, eyeing Akira's posture. "Be careful. Strength without patience breaks people."

Akira bowed. "I understand."

And he did.

He trained smarter—not just harder.

Gourd sessions grew shorter but more intense.

Forms became sharper, cleaner.

Breathing never broke—even during cooking, work, or long medical shifts.

"Great Sage: Current state—Total Concentration Breathing maintained subconsciously for extended periods. Mental load reduced significantly."

At night, Mitsuri walked with him through lantern-lit streets, arms wrapped in a thick scarf.

"You're really different now," she said softly.

"Bad different?"

She shook her head. "No. Just… brighter. Like you're carrying something warm inside you."

He smiled faintly. "Maybe I am."

She looked away, cheeks pink—not from the cold.

They stopped near her gate.

Mitsuri hesitated, then said quietly, "When I breathe like that… it feels like I could keep moving forever."

Akira met her gaze. "Then promise me something."

"What?"

"Stop before forever."

She laughed softly. "…Okay. Only because you asked."

As Akira walked home, breath steady, steps firm, Great Sage spoke one final time.

"Great Sage: Conclusion—two distinct growth paths confirmed. Yours—refinement and intensity. Hers—flow and endurance. Convergence unlikely. Complementarity high."

Akira looked up at the cold stars.

"…That's fine," he thought.

Different paths.

Same direction.
