Since childhood, Cyril and Safia had been orphans in a remote village behind the mountain. They both lived in poverty, and Cyril worked every day to provide for his ill sister at home.

But one day, the Imperial Church, which had long governed the town under the sovereignty of the Empire, demanded a sacrifice of a pure soul to prevent a prophesied disaster.

Against her will, Safia was taken from the refuge of her brother. The church insisted that her sacrifice was for the 'greater good' of the townsfolk, leaving Cyril defeated and helpless.

As if acknowledging Cyril's despair, a spirit came to him in the form of a black fox. It offered him a chance for vengeance, in return for a favor in a faraway place.
