Chapter 23 - Chapter 23-The Seraphim King

Rachel couldn't breathe.

The vault was chaos.

Gunshots.

Screams.

Metal clashing.

Seraphim soldiers moving like engineered death.

But none of that mattered.

Because the man standing in front of her…

The soldier with empty eyes that were no longer empty…

Had just said her name.

Not "Target."

Not "Subject."

Not "Moretti."

He said it the way only one person ever had.

Soft.

Protective.

"…Rachel."

Her heart stopped.

Her lips trembled.

"D…Dad?"

The word shattered something inside her.

The soldier stood still.

His massive body was covered in scars. Surgical lines across his neck. A faint metallic implant visible behind his ear.

He looked older.

Harder.

Not human.

But his eyes…

His eyes were Alessandro's.

The same deep darkness.

The same dangerous intelligence.

The same love he used to hide behind discipline.

Rachel stepped forward slowly.

Her entire body shaking.

"No…" Isabella whispered behind her. "It's impossible…"

Selene's laughter broke through the chaos.

"Oh, this is better than I imagined."

Rachel ignored everything.

The soldier's breathing was slow.

Mechanical almost.

But his gaze softened as he looked at her.

He lifted his hand slowly…

As if fighting something inside himself.

The mechanical voice echoed again:

"PRIMARY TARGET: RAZIEL KANE. EXECUTE."

The soldier flinched.

Like he was in pain.

Rachel's eyes widened.

"No!" she screamed.

The soldier's head twitched violently.

He grabbed his own skull with one hand, growling low.

The voice repeated:

"EXECUTE."

Rachel rushed forward and grabbed his arm.

"Don't!" she cried. "Please!"

His skin was cold.

Too cold.

He looked down at her.

Confusion flickered in his eyes.

"…Little star," he whispered.

Rachel broke.

That was what her father used to call her.

When she was small.

When she was scared of thunderstorms.

When he would carry her and say, "You're my little star. You light the dark."

Rachel collapsed against him.

"Dad…" she sobbed. "You're alive…"

But was he?

His chest rose unevenly.

His body trembled like something was controlling him from inside.

Behind them, a Seraphim soldier snapped another guard's neck.

Raziel fought two soldiers at once despite his tied wrists, blood dripping from his shoulder.

"Rachel!" he shouted. "Move!"

Selene raised her gun again.

"Oh no," she murmured. "We can't have a family reunion."

She fired.

The bullet shot toward Rachel.

But the soldier Alessandro moved faster than humanly possible.

He grabbed Rachel and spun her around, shielding her with his body.

The bullet hit his back.

Rachel screamed.

But he didn't fall.

He didn't even flinch.

Instead, he turned slowly toward Selene.

And for the first time…

His eyes weren't confused.

They were pure murder.

Selene's smile faded.

"…Fascinating."

The mechanical voice crackled louder now.

"SUBJECT A-01: MALFUNCTION."

Rachel's breath caught.

A-01.

The first.

The original.

Her father.

Alessandro stepped forward.

Each step heavy.

Controlled.

His movements were powerful but unnatural like a lion forced into armor.

Adrian was screaming from the floor.

"Kill them! Kill them all!"

But no one was listening anymore.

The Seraphim soldiers had stopped attacking.

They were turning.

Slowly.

One by one.

Toward Alessandro.

Their leader.

Their king.

Rachel stepped back.

"Dad…?"

Alessandro looked at her again.

And this time…

There was no confusion.

Only clarity.

Only rage.

"Rachel," he said quietly. "Who did this to you?"

Her tears fell harder.

"They they hurt Raziel… they

Alessandro's head snapped toward Raziel.

Raziel was on his knees now, struggling against a soldier holding him down.

Alessandro's jaw tightened.

He turned toward the soldier holding Raziel.

And spoke one word.

"Release."

The Seraphim soldier froze.

Then slowly…

He let go.

Raziel collapsed forward, coughing.

Selene's eyes widened.

"No…" she whispered. "They obey command hierarchy…"

Alessandro stepped forward again.

And every Seraphim soldier stepped back.

They were listening to him.

Not the system.

Not the mechanical voice.

Him.

The vault trembled.

The voice screamed:

"CONTROL OVERRIDE."

Red lights flashed violently.

Alessandro grabbed Rachel's shoulders suddenly.

His grip firm but not painful.

"Listen to me," he said urgently.

Rachel stared at him, shaking.

"I didn't die," he said. "I was taken."

Her breath hitched.

"Taken…?"

His eyes flickered briefly.

"They experimented. Enhanced. Weaponized."

Rachel's stomach twisted.

"They turned you into this…"

Alessandro's voice lowered.

"I let them."

Rachel froze.

"What?"

"I needed to disappear," he said. "I needed to build something stronger than my enemies."

Selene laughed bitterly.

"You arrogant monster."

Alessandro looked at her coldly.

"You wanted my empire."

Selene lifted her chin.

"I still do."

Alessandro stepped closer to her.

And Selene, for the first time in her life…

Stepped back.

"You built Seraphim thinking you could control the world," Selene said. "But you can't control evolution."

Alessandro's expression darkened.

"I don't need to."

He raised his hand slightly.

And every Seraphim soldier turned toward Selene's men.

Rachel realized something horrifying.

Her father wasn't malfunctioning.

He was adapting.

The mechanical voice shouted:

"SYSTEM FAILURE. SHUTDOWN INITIATED."

The lights flickered violently.

Raziel stumbled to Rachel's side, grabbing her waist protectively.

He stared at Alessandro.

"This is your father?" he muttered.

Rachel nodded weakly.

Raziel's eyes hardened.

"He's not human anymore."

Rachel swallowed.

"I know."

Alessandro turned back to Rachel.

His gaze softened briefly.

"I didn't want you here," he said quietly. "But now that you are…"

His voice lowered.

"You must choose."

Rachel's chest tightened.

"Choose what?"

Alessandro's eyes shifted toward the red button.

"If Seraphim continues," he said, "the world changes forever."

Rachel's pulse spiked.

"And if I shut it down?"

Alessandro's expression shifted slightly.

Then he said something that shattered her.

"Then I die."

Silence.

Complete silence.

Even the chaos around them felt distant.

Rachel shook her head slowly.

"No…"

Alessandro's voice was calm.

"They fused my nervous system to the control core. I am the key."

Rachel's breathing became erratic.

"You did this for revenge?" she whispered.

"For protection," he corrected.

Raziel stepped forward.

"You built an army of killers."

Alessandro looked at him sharply.

"I built something that no one can threaten."

Selene smirked.

"And yet here we are."

Rachel's eyes filled with tears again.

"You're asking me to kill you."

Alessandro stepped closer.

"No," he said gently.

"I'm asking you to be stronger than me."

Rachel broke.

She shook her head violently.

"I just found you…"

Alessandro lifted his hand slowly and touched her cheek.

His skin still cold.

But his touch…

Familiar.

"Little star," he whispered. "I was never meant to survive this world."

Rachel grabbed his wrist desperately.

"I won't do it."

Behind them, the Seraphim soldiers began to move again.

Unstable.

Violent.

The mechanical voice shrieked:

"CORE OVERLOAD."

Sparks flew from the walls.

The pods began exploding.

The entire vault was about to collapse.

Raziel grabbed Rachel.

"We need to go!"

Rachel screamed.

"I can't leave him!"

Alessandro pushed her toward Raziel suddenly.

"Take her," he ordered.

Raziel caught her.

"No!" Rachel cried, fighting him.

Alessandro looked at her one last time.

"I loved you," he said.

And for the first time in this entire nightmare…

He smiled.

A real one.

Then he turned and walked toward the control core at the center of the vault.

Selene shouted.

"Stop him!"

But it was too late.

Alessandro placed his hand against the glowing control panel.

The red button began flashing rapidly.

Rachel screamed his name.

"DAD!"

He looked back once.

His eyes full of pride.

Then

He pressed it.

The world exploded in white light.

When the light faded…

Rachel was on the floor.

Her ears ringing.

Smoke everywhere.

Metal bent.

Fire burning.

Raziel was above her, shielding her body.

She pushed him away.

"Dad?!"

There was no answer.

The Seraphim soldiers were down.

Motionless.

Dead.

The control core was destroyed.

And in the center of the ruin…

There was no body.

Only ashes.

Rachel's chest tightened painfully.

"No…"

Tears streamed down her face.

Selene was gone.

Adrian was gone.

Half the vault had collapsed.

Raziel pulled her into his arms.

"It's over," he whispered.

Rachel shook her head slowly.

"No," she whispered.

Her eyes fell to the ground.

To the black book.

It had survived.

Untouched.

She slowly picked it up.

And when she opened it…

There was a new message written in fresh ink.

Not old.

Not from years ago.

New.

Rachel's breath stopped.

Because the message said:

"Phase Two Begins."

Rachel's hands started shaking violently.

Raziel looked over her shoulder.

"What the hell does that mean?"

Rachel's voice was barely audible.

"It means…"

Her eyes slowly lifted toward the darkness beyond the vault.

"He's not done."

And somewhere…

Far away.

A screen flickered to life.

Monitoring systems rebooted.

A shadowed figure watched the footage of the vault explosion.

And smiled.
