Chapter 2 - Chapter 1

THE SECRET I WAS NEVER MEANT TO SEE.

The elevator doors opened as I walked straight into the conversation that would trap me for life.

The CEO's office was supposed to be empty. It was written on the schedule.

I stepped inside, clutching a thin folder of contracts, and stopped.

The lights were low. The city glittered beyond the glass wall. A man stood near the desk, phone to his ear, facing the wall, voice stripped of all warmth.

"…Father would never have agreed," he sad.

There was a pause.

"Good. Let my brother keep believing that, he will never find out."

My stomach dropped.

I took a step back.

"Transfer the remaining shares tonight," the man continued. "Before the board meeting. Once it's done, it's irreversible and can't be undone."

Another pause.

"No," he said coolly and without remorse. "They don't need to know I forged the authorization."

The word hit me like a slap on the face, it was like the world was crumbling.

Forged.

My hand shook. Papers slipped from the folder and fell to the marbled floor.

The call ended.

Slowly, the man turned.

Clifford Ethan.

CEO, Billionaire. The youngest Clifford's son—the one the media loved to call self-made. His eyes met mine, and in that instant, I knew something irreversible had happened.

"How long have you been there?"he asked.

My heart pounded. "I—I just came to drop the the files of revised contracts."

He looked at the papers scattered near my feet. One of them layed open.

A shareholder transfer agreement.

His name was on it.So was his father's and his elder brother's.

Both signatures identical.

Identical.

His gaze followed mine.

I felt like the truth could sweep me from the floor.

He hadn't inherited the empire.

He had stolen it.

"You shouldn't be looking at things that don't concern you," he said, stepping closer.

"I didn't mean to—" I stammered.

"Did you see the signatures?" he interrupted.

The room tightened around us.

I nodded. Just once.

That was all it took. At that moment

his jaw clenched—not in anger, but in something far worse.

Calculation

"My father believed I was loyal," he said evenly. "My brother believed I was weak."

He stopped in front of me. Close enough that I had to tilt my head to meet his eyes.

"They were wrong."

My voice trembled. " But you cheated them." I said.

There was a beat of silence.

Then he smiled.

"Careful, Miss Tessy," he murmured. "That word can get you ruined."He said to me with a smirk on his face.

"I won't tell anyone." I said with heart trembling.

"That," he said softly, "is what everyone says."

He reached past me and pressed a button on the wall. The office doors locked with a quiet click that echoed far too loudly.

"You now know how I became CEO," Clifford Ethan continued. "Which means you are either very dangerous… or very useful."

At that moment fear grossed me.

"I just want to leave," I whispered.

"And I want to make sure you never try," he replied.

He turned, picked up a folder from his desk, and placed it in my hands.

PERSONAL SECRETARY — CEO'S OFFICE

My breath failed at that moment seeing the heading of the file.

"You'll work for me," he said. "You'll see nothing, hear nothing, and speak to no one."

"And what if I refuse?" I questioned.

His gaze hardened.

"Then I'll have to decide," he said calmly, "whether my family loses the company… or you lose everything else."

The office suddenly felt like a cage.

As I stared at the contract trembling in my hands, one terrible truth became clear.

I hadn't discovered Clifford Ethan secret.

I had become part of it.

The contract was heavier than it looked.

Not in weight—but in consequence.

I stared at the bold letters printed across the first page.

NON-DISCLOSURE AGREEMENT

My name was already typed in.

"So," Clifford Ethan said behind me, "have you always read contracts this slowly, or is tonight special?"

I flinched.

"I don't understand," I said quietly. "This isn't my job."

"It is now."

I turned to face him. "You can't just—"

"I can," he cut in smoothly. "And you're smart enough to know that."

He leaned against the edge of his desk, arms crossed, watching me the way one watches a chessboard already decided.

"You saw forged signatures," he continued. "You heard conversations that would ruined my plans and everything."

So you better co-operate and do as I say.

If not someone else would pay the price for your negligence.

"My family—" I stopped myself.

He smiled faintly. "Yes. Your family."

The words landed like a blade.

"You investigated my background when you hired me?" I asked.

"I investigated everything," he replied. "Including a mother who needs expensive medication. A younger brother whose tuition is overdue."

My throat closed.

"That's none of your business."

"It became my business the moment you learned mine." he said with a smile on his face.

I looked back at the contract. Page after page of legal language twisted around a single truth: if I signed, my silence would be permanent.

"If I sign this," I said, "I'm trapped."

"If you don't," he said calmly, "you're reckless."

I lifted my gaze. "You cheated your father. You betrayed your brother. And now you're threatening me."

A muscle in his jaw tightened.

"I did what was necessary," he said. "My father was handing the company to a man who would've destroyed it."

"Your brother?"

"He was too sentimental," Ethan snapped. Then, catching himself, he looked away. "This isn't some most honest debate."

"No," I whispered. "It's a prison sentence."

Silence stretched.

Then he walked toward me.

I backed up until the desk pressed into my spine.

"You're afraid," he said softly. "Good. That means you're careful."

His hand came down beside me, trapping me between his arm and the desk.

"I'm not your enemy, Miss Carter. I'm the man keeping your life intact."

My pulse raced. "By controlling it?"

"By protecting it."

His eyes dropped to the contract in my hands.

"Sign," he said.

The pen lay on the desk.

My fingers trembled as I picked it up.

Once I signed, there would be no pretending this was temporary. No imagining I could walk away untouched.

"I want something," I said.

His brow lifted. "You're negotiating?"

"I want a guarantee," I continued, forcing the words out. "You won't hurt my family. Ever."

For the first time, he hesitated.

Then he nodded. "Agreed."

"And if I'm fired?"

"You won't be."

I let out a shaky breath and signed my name.

The pen left the paper.

It was done.

Ethan took the contract, glanced at it once, then slipped it into a drawer and locked it.

"Good," he said. "You start tomorrow."

"Tomorrow?" I echoed.

He pressed another button on his desk. The office doors unlocked with a soft click.

"You'll move to the executive floor," he continued. "Your phone will be replaced. Your schedule will come from me."

My stomach dropped. "That sounds like surveillance."

"That," he said, meeting my eyes, "is trust."

I stepped toward the door, legs unsteady.

"One more thing," he added, and I paused

He looked at me, expression unreadable.

"If my father or my brother ever contact you," Ethan said quietly, "you tell me first."

"And if they ask about the signatures?"

His voice dropped.

"You tell them nothing."

I nodded.

As I reached for the door, his voice followed me one last time.

"Miss Tessy?"

"Yes?"

"You should know something."

I turned.

He was smiling again—that calm, dangerous smile.

"People who know my secret usually don't last long around me."

The door closed behind me.
