Freda Pov
I was lying in bed, staring at the ceiling, unable to sleep, when I heard it. A scream is coming from somewhere in the pack house. It was loud and filled with pain and terror.
I sat up fast and listened. For a moment, everything was quiet. Then I heard it again. Another scream. This one was different. Weaker. Like someone who did not have the strength to scream properly anymore.
"Something is wrong," I said and jumped out of bed.
I ran to my door and threw it open. Other wolves were coming out of their rooms, too. Everyone looked confused and scared. Nobody knew where the screaming had come from.
"What was that?" someone asked.
"It sounded like it came from upstairs," another person said. "From the Alpha wing."
I did not wait to hear more discussion. I ran toward the stairs and took them two at a time. My bare feet slapped against the wooden steps. My heart was pounding so hard I could feel it in my throat.
