Chapter 53 - A SIN TO REMEMBER

Chapter 53 – Marcus Notices the Silence.

Marcus knew something was wrong before she said it.

Lila sat across from him at the café, stirring her drink long after the ice had melted. She was present physically — nodding, responding, even smiling at appropriate intervals — but her energy felt displaced.

Like she was operating on a delay.

"You've been distant," Marcus said gently.

"Is it him?"

"No," she said quietly.

The part of her asking questions no one else had dared to.

Marcus reached across the table, touching her hand. "You feel far away."

Lila inhaled slowly.

Because she was.

Not from him.

From the version of herself she had been sustaining.

And somewhere deep inside her thoughts, steady and patient, the Presence did not whisper.

It waited.
