Chapter 29 - A SIN TO REMEMBER

Chapter Twenty-Nine: The Cost of Not Going Back

Lila began to notice how people reacted to her freedom.

Some admired it. Others feared it. Many misunderstood it entirely.

Freedom, she learned, unsettles those who survive by structure.

She tried dating and felt nothing. Tried solitude and felt too much. Her past refused to stay behind her; it followed at a respectful distance, reminding her that independence is not the absence of attachment — it is the acceptance of responsibility.

Ethan moved on quietly. That knowledge stung more than if he had remained broken. His healing felt like proof that she had been a chapter, not a conclusion.

Marcus remained present but unanchored. He never asked her to define what they were. The ambiguity became its own intimacy — terrifying and addictive.

One night, alone, Lila realized the truth she had avoided:

She had not escaped love triangles.

She had dismantled them.

There was no choosing anymore. No competing affections. Only a single question left unanswered:

Who was she when no one was waiting for her to become something else?

That question sat heavy, unromantic, unavoidable.

And she knew the final reckoning was approaching — not between men, but between the woman she had been and the one she was no longer willing to betray.
