Chapter 5 - A SIN TO REMEMBER

Chapter Five: What Refuses to Stay Buried

Lila tried to live as if restraint were enough.

Days passed, then weeks, and still Ethan existed in the quiet spaces of her life—the pause before sleep, the hollow moments between breaths. She avoided the streets they once walked, the café where silence had felt intimate. Yet memory is a cruel archivist; it preserves what we beg to forget.

It was during a charity fundraiser—one she almost skipped—that the past reached out and touched her shoulder.

"Lila?"

The voice froze her blood.

She turned slowly, dread blooming before recognition settled. Marcus stood there, older than memory yet unmistakably himself. The man she had loved once. The man she had lost in ways she never fully mourned.

His presence felt unreal, like a page torn from another chapter of her life and forced back into the story. Ethan vanished from her thoughts in that instant—not replaced, but overshadowed by something older, unresolved, and dangerously familiar.

Marcus smiled, but it didn't reach his eyes.

"I didn't know if you'd remember me," he said.

Lila did. Too well.
