Chapter 43 - Chapter 12: The First Test

Two weeks later, the test came.

Haru was at the community center alone — Kenji had stayed home with a cold — when the lights flickered.

Then died.

Emergency lights clicked on, casting red shadows across the room.

People murmured, confused.

Then the door burst open.

Figures in white — not coats, but tactical gear. Masks covering their faces. Equipment glowing faintly in their hands.

A voice through a speaker:

"Nobody move. We're here for the subjects. Cooperate and no one gets hurt."

Haru's blood ran cold.

The organization.

Here.

Now.

He looked at the others — Aiko, the leopard man, the tree girl, dozens more. Fear in their eyes. Panic building.

Haru stood.

"You're not taking anyone."

The lead figure turned toward him. "Haru. The primary subject. We were hoping you'd be here."

They raised a device — smaller than the doctor's, but similar.

Light gathered.

Haru felt something pull inside him — a familiar sensation, like the world trying to open again.

But this time, he knew something they didn't.

He'd already accepted himself.

He'd already healed.

There was nothing left for them to take.

The light hit him —

And passed through.

Harmless.

The lead figure stared.

"What —"

Haru moved.

Not with imagination — with real speed, real strength. He crossed the room in seconds, grabbed the device, and crushed it.

The figure stumbled back.

"The syndrome — it's gone — you're just —"

"Human?" Haru finished. "Yeah. I am."

He looked around at the other figures.

"All of us are. And humans protect each other."

From behind him, the others rose.

Not as fighters — they weren't soldiers. But as people. Standing together.

The lead figure hesitated.

Then, slowly, they retreated.

Not defeated.

But uncertain.

As they disappeared into the night, Haru knew one thing for certain:

This wasn't over.

But for tonight, they were safe.
