Chapter 77 - 77

Five o'clock in the afternoon, the worst of the heat finally backing off.

Ethan, Jack, Sarah, and Ashley met up outside Emma Wilson's apartment complex.

The four of them headed upstairs, laughing and trash-talking each other the whole way.

Emma's living room looked like a FedEx distribution center had exploded—gift boxes everywhere, all wrapped in elegant paper with custom labels reading "Class of 2014 - Happy Graduation!"

"Alright, worker bees! Time to earn your keep!"

Emma announced cheerfully, gesturing at the mountain of presents. She shot Ethan a knowing wink:

"These are for the teachers, those are for everyone else. All thanks to our generous benefactor, Mr. Moneybags Miller over here!"

Ethan waved her off:

"Come on, it's graduation. Everyone deserves something nice."

He turned and slapped Jack on the shoulder:

"Yo, Jack! Stop standing there like a statue. Time to put those muscles to work!"

Jack bent down and grabbed a stack of boxes, muttering:

"Ethan, I swear to god, you're such a..."

He couldn't even finish before he started laughing at himself.

Sarah reached for a bag that looked pretty heavy, and Ethan automatically moved to take it from her:

"Here, let me—"

"I got it, really,"

Sarah said quietly but firmly, already lifting the bag with steady, practiced ease. No struggle, no hesitation.

Ashley and Emma grabbed their share of boxes, and the whole crew exchanged grins before heading back downstairs in a chaotic parade.

They flagged down two Ubers, crammed all the gifts into the trunks (one driver was NOT happy about it), and headed to their favorite spot—Riverside Restaurant.

This place was their unofficial class headquarters—good food, reasonable prices, and the owner knew them all by name at this point.

They arrived half an hour early. The restaurant was still pretty empty.

They'd just finished stacking all the gifts in the corner of the large private room they'd reserved when their homeroom teacher, Ms. Jensen, walked in.

She stopped dead when she saw the mountain of presents:

"What in the world...?"

Emma jumped in quickly:

"Ms. Jensen! These are graduation gifts! Ethan's idea—he wanted to do something special for everyone!"

Ethan smiled:

"You promised me a dinner if I got valedictorian, Ms. J. Figured I should return the favor, right?"

Ms. Jensen pointed at him and laughed:

"Ethan Miller! You're something else! Well, on behalf of everyone, thank you. This is incredibly thoughtful."

She was smiling so hard the corners of her eyes crinkled, clearly touched.

Classmates and teachers started trickling in, and the private room got progressively louder.

Everyone was catching up—talking about summer plans, college choices, who was going where, who was dating who now.

Then one of the guys, Brad Thompson, looked over at Jack who was in the middle of some elaborate story, and yelled:

"DUDE! Jack! Did you spend the summer working construction? In the DESERT? Why are you so DARK?! You look like you got hit with a spray tan gun!"

The whole room erupted in laughter.

Jack instinctively touched his super-tanned face and arms, trying to defend himself:

"Screw you, Brad! This is the natural result of GRINDING for my driver's license! You know, actually WORKING for something? Try it sometime!"

A girl named Lisa jumped in, grinning:

"Wait, didn't you say you were doing the driving test with Ethan, Sarah, and Ashley all summer?"

She pointed at Ashley, who was literally glowing in her new dress, looking like she'd spent summer in a spa. Then at Ethan and Sarah, who both had perfectly normal skin tones:

"Uh... why are they all normal and you look like a burnt marshmallow? What happened? Were you the only one actually driving?"

Everyone's eyes ping-ponged between Jack and his supposedly "driver's license squad," and the contrast was BRUTAL.

"I... uh..."

Jack opened his mouth, completely at a loss, frozen mid-gesture.

The room absolutely lost it.

....

Once everyone had arrived.

The private room was packed, laughter threatening to blow the roof off.

Ms. Jensen did a headcount, stood up with a warm smile, and raised her voice:

"Alright everyone! I'm so glad we could all be here today! I know some of you couldn't make it—summer travels, family stuff—but you're here in spirit! Now, let's not waste any more time. Let's eat!"

Waiters started bringing out appetizers.

Right then, Ethan and Emma exchanged a look and stood up together, heading toward the gift pile.

"Hey everyone—teachers, classmates!"

Emma's voice cut through the chatter, drawing everyone's attention:

"Happy graduation! Ms. Jensen kept her promise about this dinner, and a few of us wanted to add something special... Courtesy of 'Boss Ethan' here—we've got graduation gifts for everyone!"

She gestured at the mountain of presents to cheers and applause.

Ethan, Emma, Sarah, and Ashley started handing out gifts one by one.

"Here you go, Mike!"

"Lisa, catch!"

"Brad, this one's yours!"

Everyone who got a gift immediately opened it—custom engraved pens with their class motto and "Class of 2014" inscribed on them.

"Oh man, this is sick!"

"These are actually really nice!"

"Wait, these are personalized? Ethan, how much did you SPEND?!"

Emma added:

"For anyone who couldn't be here today, we've got theirs set aside! If you live near someone or you're close friends, grab theirs and we'll coordinate in the group chat!"

Several people volunteered immediately.

After the student gifts were distributed, Ethan and Emma picked up several noticeably fancier gift boxes and walked to the head table where the teachers were sitting.

"Ms. Jensen,"

Ethan held out an elegant wooden box with both hands, his expression genuinely respectful:

"These past three years... you've put up with all of us, which honestly deserves some kind of medal. Thank you for everything you've taught us. This is a premium coffee set—I hope you can use it to actually relax once in a while."

Ms. Jensen looked genuinely moved. She took the box, opened it carefully, and inside was a beautiful French press set with artisan coffee beans.

She ran her fingers along the edge of the box for a moment, and when she looked back up, her eyes were definitely getting misty.

She reached out and squeezed Ethan's shoulder, her voice thick:

"You kids... you're all so thoughtful. I'm so proud of all of you. Thank you. And I wish you all nothing but success and happiness."

The room burst into applause.

Then Ethan and Emma handed elegantly wrapped boxes to the female teachers.

"Ms. Rodriguez, Ms. Chen, Ms. Martinez... our favorite teachers,"

Emma said with a smile:

"These are premium spa gift sets—a little thank-you from all of us. We hope you stay forever young and keep inspiring students!"

The female teachers accepted them with surprised delight.

Ms. Martinez laughed:

"You guys! This is way too generous! But thank you so much. Really. You've all been wonderful."

The other teachers echoed their thanks.

Finally, Ethan distributed the remaining boxes to the male teachers—all premium coffee sets.

"Mr. Cooper, Mr. Davis... thank you for everything! A small token of our appreciation!"

Ethan and Emma said together.

Mr. Cooper laughed loudly, accepting his gift:

"Ha! Well thank you, valedictorian! And thank you all! Don't be strangers—come back and visit once in a while!"

After all the gifts were handed out, the private room was filled with this warm, bittersweet atmosphere—the kind you only get at graduations.

The teachers looked at these kids who were about to fly off into the world, their expressions mixing pride with inevitable sadness at letting them go.

The students looked back with genuine gratitude.

This moment—right here—this was what it was all about.
