Chapter 53 - Chapter 53

The heavy slam of the classroom door echoed through the hallway, vibrating in the soles of Mai Sakurajima's feet. Beneath her black tights, her legs moved with increasing urgency, her pace quickening as she fled down the corridor of the school building.

A sharp, jagged ache throbbed in her chest. It was a sensation common to any girl who had just opened a door only to find the person she cared for being pulled in two directions by rivals just as radiant as herself. After everything they had been through—the shared secrets, the moments where he alone acknowledged her existence—she had come to view Rin Kuga as hers.

But the scene in the classroom suggested he might not feel the same.

The more she dwelled on it, the more the pain intensified, a dull pressure behind her ribs that felt as though someone were slowly twisting a knife. Was I just making a fool of myself? Was it all a one-sided delusion? The possibility was a bitter pill she found impossible to swallow.

Back in the classroom, Rin didn't hesitate. As soon as the door rattled shut, he shook his arms free from the iron grips of Utaha Kasumigaoka and Sakura Yamauchi. He wasn't one to panic, but the look on Mai's face was something that couldn't leave unaddressed. To a King, a misunderstood decree was a precursor to chaos.

"We'll finish this later," he said, his voice flat as he rose from his seat.

He didn't wait for a reply, leaving Utaha and Sakura standing there in a state of stunned silence. The two girls exchanged a single, scorching look of mutual disdain.

"Hmph!"

In perfect, unintended synchronicity, they both whipped their heads away, crossing their arms over their chests as they turned their backs on one another.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

The rhythmic strike of leather soles on the linoleum heralded Rin's approach. He caught up to Mai in the middle of the long, sun-drenched hallway.

"Hey. Wait a minute," he called out.

Mai came to a halt. She turned slowly, her movements stiff and guarded. She crossed her arms, her expression shifting into a mask of glacial indifference—the Cool Senpai persona dialed up to a freezing point.

"Is there something you need, Kuga-san?" she asked. Her voice was ice, devoid of the warmth they usually shared in private.

Rin's mouth twitched. He saw right through the performance; she wasn't just angry, she was nursing a bruised heart. He had expected the fallout, but seeing the legendary "Bunny Girl Senpai" genuinely green with envy was a rare sight. There was a flicker of satisfaction in it—knowing that a woman so perfect could be moved to such extremes by his mere presence—but he knew better than to let it show.

"Look," Rin started, his voice steady. "Those girls back there... they're just acquaintances. There's nothing more to it than that."

Mai didn't thaw. She kept her arms locked across her chest, her gaze fixed on a point just past his shoulder. "Oh? Is that so? And why exactly should that matter to me?"

The rebuttal was sharp, intentionally dismissive. She felt his explanation was perfunctory, a mere footnote to the chaos she had just witnessed.

Rin, however, knew exactly which lever to pull. He didn't chase her with more excuses. Instead, he adopted an expression of placid realization, his tone becoming dangerously casual.

"You're right," he said, nodding slowly. "I only came to clear the air, but I suppose it really has nothing to do with you, Sakurajima-senpai."

Without another word, he turned on his heel and began walking back toward the classroom.

He knew the best way to handle a woman of Mai's temperament was to give her exactly what she claimed to want: distance.

"Ah—!"

The sound escaped her before she could stop it. Mai stood frozen, watching his retreating back. The regret hit her instantly, sharper than the jealousy had been. She bit her lip, cursing her own stubborn pride. He had come to her, he had tried to explain himself, and she had shoved him away with a cold remark.

Now, the ache in her heart returned, weighted with the fear that she had pushed too hard. She stood in the golden light of the hallway, a solitary figure caught between her regal dignity and the crushing weight of a mistake she wasn't sure she could fix.
