Chapter 44 - The Cost of Being Chosen

Adrian did not leave Grimridge in defeat.

He left with conviction still intact, and that made him more dangerous than rage ever could have. Rage burned fast and exposed itself too easily, while conviction endured. It settled into the mind, gathered shape in silence, and returned sharpened by distance.

Three days passed after his exile without any visible disturbance. Patrol lines held. Enforcement flowed cleanly through Cassian's command. No neighboring pack tested the border, and no open faction formed inside Grimridge in protest of what had happened in the council hall.

On the surface, the pack had regained its structure with almost unnerving ease. Underneath, something remained unresolved, not loud enough to be named, but present in the careful way wolves carried themselves when they suspected a storm had not passed, only moved out of sight.

Sable felt it before anyone spoke it aloud.
