(Convergence)
The western district no longer felt like part of the same city.
By evening, movement had changed.
Shops closed earlier. Guards moved in larger numbers. Conversations lowered the moment armored footsteps passed nearby.
No official announcement had been made.
Which only made people more nervous.
Near one of the market intersections, Lucien leaned against a stone railing with a piece of fruit in one hand and visible disappointment in the other.
"This apple is still terrible," he muttered.
Nyra glanced sideways at him. "You bought another one?"
"I needed consistency."
"That's not how consistency works."
"It absolutely is."
Jorn stood nearby with his arms crossed, watching the street instead of participating in the conversation.
Then his gaze shifted.
Three estate guards moved quickly past the intersection.
Not patrol pace.
Search pace.
Lucien straightened slightly.
"…That's new."
Nyra immediately noticed it too.
The guards weren't alone.
More followed behind them carrying lanterns and signal whistles.
Then came the words.
"Check the western route again!"
"Search below the collapse point!"
"Lord Halvane wants confirmation!"
Nyra's expression changed first.
"…Collapse point?"
One of the passing guards answered another loudly enough for them to overhear.
"Lady Mireya and Pryan Gwanar are still missing!"
Lucien blinked once.
Then slowly lowered the apple.
"…You leave those two alone for half a day and this happens."
Nyra was already thinking ahead.
"The tunnel."
Jorn looked toward the western district streets.
"The guards know about it now."
Lucien sighed.
"Of course they do. Pryan probably broke another wall."
"That's actually very possible," Nyra admitted.
The three watched as more guards disappeared toward the restricted section of the district.
Then Jorn pushed himself off the wall.
"We follow."
Lucien looked at him. "That was fast."
"We don't interfere unless necessary," Jorn continued calmly. "We stay hidden. If the guards get into trouble, then we move."
Nyra nodded immediately.
Lucien sighed dramatically and tossed the apple away.
"I hate it when the responsible plans make sense."
They moved.
Not directly behind the guards.
That would be amateurish.
Instead, they shifted through side streets and parallel alleys, using distance and crowd movement to shadow the search operation.
Ahead, lanternlight flickered near the collapsed wall where Pryan and Mireya had entered earlier.
Several guards were already descending into the underground route.
Lucien stared into the darkness below.
"…You know," he said quietly, "normal academy students usually spend holidays sleeping."
Nyra adjusted the straps around her wrist guards.
"We stopped being normal around the forest."
"…Fair."
Far deeper within the city, another group had already begun moving.
Seris stood beside an abandoned water station near the inner district while Elyra, Caelum, Rhea, and Isen spread across nearby positions.
The atmosphere had changed hours ago.
Even before the guards started mobilizing.
Now the tension felt unmistakable.
Then footsteps approached quietly behind them.
No one reacted immediately.
Because they recognized the presence first.
Kaien stepped into view wearing ordinary traveler's clothing, dark gloves still covering his hands. His appearance looked different enough that most civilians would never connect him to the academy instructor.
The students recognized him instantly anyway.
Seris spoke first.
"They disappeared."
Not a question.
Kaien nodded once.
"Yes."
No panic.
No wasted reassurance.
Just confirmation.
Caelum frowned. "Do we retrieve them?"
Kaien's gaze shifted toward the deeper inner district.
"No."
That answer surprised several of them.
Rhea crossed her arms. "Then what are we doing?"
"Restricting movement," Kaien replied.
He crouched briefly near the stone pavement and drew a rough map across the dust with one gloved finger.
"Beneath this city is an abandoned transport network," he said calmly. "Four major access routes. Five known emergence points."
His finger tapped two marks near the inner district.
"These exits remain active."
Then three more.
"These are unstable but usable."
Seris studied the map immediately.
"You want us controlling the emergence points."
"Yes."
Elyra frowned slightly. "You think they'll try to escape."
Kaien looked at her.
"I think they already are."
Silence followed briefly.
Then Seris asked the more important question.
"…And Pryan?"
For the first time, Kaien paused slightly before answering.
"He is moving."
Not comforting.
Not alarming.
Just fact.
Still, Seris' shoulders eased slightly despite herself.
Kaien noticed.
Didn't comment.
He stood again.
"Seris. Elyra. Hold the eastern emergence route."
His gaze shifted.
"Caelum, Rhea, Isen. Southern route."
"And the others?" Rhea asked.
"Rotating support and communication."
Kaien looked toward the deeper district tunnels beneath the city.
"I'll enter separately."
Caelum frowned. "Alone?"
"Yes."
"…That's concerning."
Kaien almost smiled.
"It should be."
Then he started walking.
Seris watched him go for a second before speaking quietly.
"He already knows what this is."
Elyra looked toward the underground district beneath them.
"…I think he knew before we did."
Deep below the city, Pryan and Mireya remained motionless near the edge of the massive underground nexus chamber.
Mana lamps continued glowing faintly in the distance.
The figures ahead still hadn't attacked.
That alone bothered Pryan more than immediate violence would have.
"They're waiting," Mireya whispered.
"Yes."
"For what?"
Pryan's eyes scanned the chamber slowly.
Positions.
Sightlines.
Movement spacing.
"…Repositioning."
The figures shifted slightly in the distance.
Not random.
Controlled.
The same timing again.
Mireya quietly adjusted her grip on her sword.
"I'm starting to hate the way you say things."
Pryan ignored that.
His attention fixed instead on the chamber itself.
Tracks crossed through the center floor in old transportation lines. Supply crates rested along the outer sections. Some recent. Some ancient.
This place wasn't abandoned.
It had been reclaimed.
One of the distant infiltrators stepped slightly forward.
"The synchronization is incomplete," the masked figure said calmly.
Pryan's eyes narrowed immediately.
Synchronization.
Again.
Mireya noticed his expression shift.
"…You know that word."
"No," Pryan replied quietly.
A pause.
"But I remember the feeling of it."
That answer made absolutely no sense to her.
Before she could ask further—
Movement echoed from another tunnel branch nearby.
Fast.
Controlled.
Several infiltrators instantly turned toward the sound.
Then steel clashed somewhere deeper within the tunnel network.
Pryan's eyes sharpened slightly.
Not random combat.
Too clean.
Someone else had entered.
Far from their chamber, Aurelian moved through another branch of the underground routes with steady pace.
The tunnel walls here carried fresher markings.
More active movement.
He stopped briefly beside a dead lantern bracket.
Then looked downward.
Fresh blood.
Not much.
A short blade wound pattern beside impact marks against the wall.
Aurelian recognized the combat flow almost immediately.
Then another sound reached him.
Voices ahead.
More than before.
Aurelian lowered his stance slightly and continued forward.
Elsewhere within the tunnels, Kaien walked alone through darkness.
No lantern.
No hesitation.
The underground air shifted differently around him.
Quieter.
As if the tunnels themselves had noticed him entering.
Kaien stopped near a wall covered in faded transport markings and newer symbols layered over them.
His gloved fingers brushed lightly across the stone.
Then his expression changed slightly.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
"So that's what you built," he said softly.
Ahead of him—
Movement.
Several presences approaching through the darkness.
For the first time since entering the tunnels, Kaien reached for his gloves.
And slowly pulled them off.
