Chapter 4 - Chapter : 4

The screen did not blink.

It waited.

Two names glowed in white letters against a black background.

ANAYA

YOURSELF

A thin red line beneath the names counted down slowly. The clock on the wall showed 1:02 a.m. The lie window had opened.

Samrat stood still. His breathing was slow, but his heart was not. It beat with a heavy rhythm, like it already knew that something permanent was about to happen.

He had always believed choices were loud things. Shouts. Arguments. Sudden actions.

This one was silent.

The room around him felt distant. Cold air touched his skin, but he barely noticed. His eyes stayed on the screen.

A voice spoke from the speakers above. Calm. Neutral. Controlled.

"You have one hour," it said. "No extensions."

Samrat did not reply. He looked down at his hands. They were steady. That surprised him.

Another screen turned on beside the first. It showed Anaya. She was sitting in the same white room as before. Her hair was loose. Her face looked tired, but her eyes were alert.

She lifted her head slowly, as if she felt him watching.

"Samrat," her voice came through the speakers. "Don't say anything."

His chest tightened. He took a step forward without thinking.

"They are listening," she continued. "Every breath. Every pause."

"I know," Samrat said softly.

She gave a small smile. It was familiar. The kind she used to give at work when things felt heavy but she did not want to show it.

"I didn't want this for you," she said.

"You brought me here," Samrat replied.

"Yes," she admitted. "Because you are the only one I trust."

The lie came instantly.

She trusts him.

It was not a lie.

Samrat felt the truth settle inside him like weight.

Another screen flickered on. It showed a future version of him. Older. Alone. Sitting in a small room filled with screens. Watching. Listening. Empty.

A different voice spoke.

"This is you if you choose her."

Samrat's jaw tightened.

The screen changed again. Now it showed Anaya walking free on a crowded street, turning once as if she sensed something missing. Her smile faded. She kept walking.

"This is her if you choose yourself," the voice said.

Samrat closed his eyes.

"Don't believe them," Anaya said quickly. "They mix truth with lies. That's how they control outcomes."

"I know," Samrat whispered.

He opened his eyes and focused. The pressure in his head increased. Lies moved through the room like slow waves.

"They think you will break," a lie whispered.

"She will be your weakness," another said.

Samrat breathed in deeply. For the first time since his power had appeared, he did not fight the lies. He observed them. He let them pass.

"Listen to me," Anaya said. "If you choose me, they will own you. They will use your fear."

"I'm not afraid of them," Samrat replied.

Her expression softened. "You should be."

The clock ticked to 1:15 a.m.

Samrat took a step back. "Why did you really bring me here?"

She hesitated. The pause was small, but he noticed it.

"I needed someone who could hear what they hide," she said. "Someone who could see me when I stopped pretending."

The lie arrived gently.

She did not plan to fall for him.

That one was true.

Samrat felt a quiet ache spread through his chest. "You used me."

"Yes," she said honestly. "And I care about you."

Both truths existed at the same time.

The lights dimmed slightly. Another voice joined the others. It was Raghav.

"You are running out of time," he said.

Samrat looked up at the ceiling. "This isn't a choice," he said. "It's a trap."

Raghav's voice carried a hint of approval. "Now you're learning."

The screen changed again. It showed a file opening. Samrat's name appeared at the top. Below it were notes, dates, observations. Years of them.

"They watched you long before Anaya," Raghav said. "She was just the bridge."

Samrat stared at the file. "So none of this is real?"

"It is very real," Raghav replied. "That's why it works."

At 1:29 a.m., the pressure spiked. Samrat winced. A sharp pain moved through his head.

He heard something new.

A lie that had not been spoken yet.

"You will choose wrong."

Samrat froze. He had never heard that before. A future lie.

He realized something then. His ability was changing again. Not growing louder. Growing deeper.

He stepped toward the control panel beneath the screen. Two touch panels waited under the names.

ANAYA

YOURSELF

Anaya's voice dropped to a whisper. "Choose yourself."

Samrat looked at her. "That's not what you want."

She met his gaze. "It's what you need."

The lie came, quiet and painful.

She wants him to choose her.

That was true.

Samrat felt his throat tighten. "I don't know how to do this without losing something."

Anaya smiled sadly. "You already have."

The clock showed 1:41 a.m.

Samrat placed his hand above the panel. Not touching. Just hovering.

Raghav spoke again. "Every listener reaches this moment. Most fail."

"What happens if I don't choose?" Samrat asked.

"Then the system will," Raghav replied.

Samrat exhaled slowly. He closed his eyes. For the first time in his life, he spoke a lie on purpose.

"I don't care," he said.

Pain exploded through his chest. He gasped and fell to one knee. His vision blurred. His body rejected the lie violently.

Anaya cried out. "Samrat!"

He understood then. He could not lie without paying the price. That was his limit. His line.

He opened his eyes and looked at the screen again.

"I won't play your version," he said weakly. "But I will choose."

The clock hit 1:55 a.m.

Samrat pressed the panel.

The room went dark.

For a moment, there was nothing. No sound. No pressure. No lies.

Then the lights returned.

Both names on the screen faded. A new message appeared.

CHOICE REGISTERED

Samrat's heart raced. "What did you do?" he demanded.

Raghav's voice sounded different now. Tighter. "You disrupted the expected outcome."

The screen showing Anaya flickered. She was gone. The white room was empty.

Samrat stood up. Panic surged. "Where is she?"

A door opened behind him. Two guards stepped in, but stopped when Raghav raised a hand.

"She is alive," Raghav said slowly. "But no longer where you think."

The lie arrived immediately.

She is safe.

It was not true.

Samrat clenched his fists. "You promised."

Raghav stepped into view through a side entrance. His calm expression had cracks now. "We promised options. Not fairness."

"What did my choice do?" Samrat asked.

Raghav studied him carefully. "You saved her from immediate disposal. And you saved yourself from ownership."

Samrat frowned. "That doesn't sound possible."

"It wasn't," Raghav admitted. "Until you made it so."

The clock reached 2:10 a.m.

Another screen activated. It showed a map. Multiple points lit up across the city.

"You are not alone," Raghav said. "Your choice activated Phase Two."

Samrat's stomach dropped. "What is Phase Two?"

Raghav hesitated. Just for a second.

The lie whispered clearly.

They lost control.

Raghav straightened. "Expansion," he said. "Adaptation."

Samrat took a step back. "You're afraid."

Raghav did not deny it.

Anaya's voice returned suddenly, weaker, distorted. "Samrat… listen carefully."

"Anaya!"

"They didn't plan for you to resist," she said. "That's why they're moving."

"Where are you?" he asked again.

"I can't see," she replied. "But I can hear."

The clock ticked toward 2:30 a.m.

Raghav turned away. "End the channel."

The screen went black.

Samrat felt something snap inside him. Not anger. Clarity.

"You need me," he said.

Raghav stopped.

"You don't control the lies," Samrat continued. "I do. And now you know it."

Raghav faced him slowly. "Careful."

Samrat met his eyes. "Between one and three, you can't hide from me."

The lie came from Raghav like a shadow.

He is right.

The clock showed 2:59 a.m.

The pressure vanished. The room fell silent.

Raghav exhaled. "Lock him in observation."

The guards moved.

As they took Samrat away, a final screen lit up behind him. He caught a glimpse of the title before the door closed.

PROJECT LISTENER

PHASE TWO: DEPLOYMENT

And beneath it, a single line:

SUBJECT: SAMRAT KUMAR

The door sealed shut.

In the silence, Samrat understood something that made his blood run cold.

He had not escaped the system.

He had changed it.

And whatever Phase Two was, it had started because of him.

Somewhere far away, Anaya listened.

And the world was no longer ready for the truth.
