Maddy's body shot upward as she jolted awake, trembling, her nightmare had returned. The same scene haunted her: driving her scalpel into her husband's chest… ending his life.
"Huff… huff… huff… that same dream again…"
Her chest heaved, breaths short and jagged, sweat slicking her hair and dampening her carefully crafted blanket. Every nerve screamed in fear, yet sleep had never felt more perilous than staying awake.
She struggled to catch her breath, and then saw Sephiran—curled beside her, arms wrapped around her waist in unconscious comfort, his tiny breaths warm against her skin. Relief washed over her, breaking the panic for just a moment. She pressed her lips softly to his temple.
"Sleep tight, my little rascal…"
Her eyes drifted toward the mobile womb chamber across the room, her pulse spiking.
"OH SH*T! My son! Dammit!"
