Chapter 44 - FALSE OPPENING

The air doesn't move. It waits.

At the center of the fractured street, Ryomen Sukuna stands still, eyes locked forward, smile thin and dangerous. Across from him, Astra's stance hasn't changed—but something about him is sharper now. More precise. Like the margin for error has disappeared entirely.

Sukuna exhales once. Slow.

Then he moves.

No burst. No flash. Just a step—and the space in front of Astra tears open with a slash that never traveled. It simply exists at the endpoint.

Astra shifts half a step.

It misses.

Another slash appears—lower, angled to split through the ribs.

Astra pivots.

Miss.

A third—

He stops.

Not because he's forced to.

Because he chooses to.

Sukuna's eyes narrow slightly.

"…There it is."

The next strike comes from behind—impossible angle, no wind-up. Astra turns just enough to let it graze past his shoulder, but Sukuna is already inside his range now. Close. Too close for wide decisions.

Elbow. Palm. Knee.

Short-range brutality.

Astra blocks the first, redirects the second—but the third lands, shallow, across his side. Not deep, but deliberate.

Sukuna smiles wider.

"You like control," he says softly. "Let's take it away."

Astra doesn't answer. He adjusts his footing, compressing the space around him further, invisible lines tightening, becoming thinner—deadlier.

Sukuna steps in again—then stops.

An opening.

Clean.

Perfect.

Astra takes it.

His hand moves, a precise line forming across Sukuna's center, aimed to end the fight in a single motion—

Sukuna smiles.

"…Got you."

The opening collapses.

It was never real.

Sukuna's counter erupts from within the very path Astra chose, a delayed strike hidden inside the "perfect" line.

Impact.

Astra is pushed back, boots grinding across broken stone before he stabilizes. Dust lifts, then settles.

Silence.

Astra looks down.

Blood.

Real.

Sukuna rolls his neck, stepping forward slowly. "You decide outcomes," he says. "So I gave you one."

Astra lifts his gaze. Calm—but no longer untouched.

"…A constructed flaw."

Sukuna chuckles. "Call it whatever you want."

They move again.

Faster.

Closer.

Deadlier.

Sukuna's attacks no longer follow patterns—they hesitate, vanish, reappear mid-motion. Some exist only at the moment of impact. Astra counters, cuts paths, redirects—but now every exchange carries risk. Every decision can be wrong.

Another clash.

Astra slips through two strikes, parries a third—but a fourth brushes his arm. A fifth tears past his guard, carving a shallow line across his torso.

He steps back.

One step.

Mirai's fingers twitch against the rubble. Her vision is blurred, barely conscious—but she sees it.

"…He's… getting pushed…"

A few meters away, Izuku Midoriya struggles to breathe, eyes half-open, body refusing to move. The fight in front of him doesn't feel real anymore.

"…This level… we can't…"

Back at the center—

Sukuna advances again, grin steady, eyes sharper than before.

"You're precise," he says. "But precision needs certainty."

Astra's stance shifts.

Subtle.

Refined.

The air around him tightens further, his "lines" thinning to near invisibility.

"…And you rely on deception," Astra replies.

Sukuna laughs softly. "Of course."

They clash again—this time neither holding back.

Astra cuts the path of Sukuna's strike—Sukuna changes the endpoint mid-motion—Astra adjusts—Sukuna delays—Astra compensates—

Two minds rewriting the same moment.

Then—

Sukuna pauses.

Just a fraction.

Another opening.

Smaller.

Sharper.

More believable.

Astra moves.

Commits.

His line forms—perfect, unavoidable, final—

Sukuna's eyes flash.

"…Now."

The counter comes from an impossible angle again—faster this time, tighter, hidden deeper within the decision itself.

Both attacks meet.

The air splits.

For a second—

Everything stops.

Sukuna and Astra standing inches apart, their attacks crossing at the exact same point—neither fully landing, neither fully stopped—the battlefield around them carved into clean, impossible fractures.

The next move…

Decides everything.
