Chapter 1 - Rudolf

Setting aside the long story. I will just say I was from Earth. Or from another world where humans had attained the sky's limit. I didn't really know what caused my death, a term I feared the most. But when I suddenly woke up here ten years ago as the son of a woodcutter in the village of Portline, I immediately sense I am nowhere on Earth.

Now, I hid the fact that I know of another life. Because frankly, they are barbarians or rather, ignorant of the world still and yet to attain independence from the religion's influence over their life. Unlike in my modern sense that is dominated by secular belief.

So, I kept my life as an apprentice of a woodcutter. A slow life I presumed would end til my death, hopefully.

"Rudolf! Go fetch the mead I bought from the tavern." That's my father. When I looked at him, he would certainly be like those medieval people who dress with low quality tunics and a leather by the front. His face is not dirty but it certainly did lack this sort of... cleanliness we get when we bath.

He's 46 winters old. Or 46 years old as I calculated. He has been a woodcutter since he was a child as well, and until now, and maybe even 'til he dies.

"Yes, father." I stuck the axe by the cutted trunk of the tree and tug the leather out of my body. I wipe my hands off from some dirt and fix my hair. After all, by the tavern is where my loved lies. Yes. My beloved but in an unrequited love.

I hurried out of the yard and press towards to blocks away before I saw a cup sign hanging by the wooden pole. I sigh heavily to ease the exhaustion then went inside the tavern's yard.

"Rudolf, nice to see you here!" One of the tavern maid greets me with a huge smile. I reciprocated with a bow and asked for my father's request. The mead.

In this year and age, a mead is the cleanest consumable liquid you could get. They are quite handy for ones health especially since we are poor. Like. Dirt poor. It mostly help prevent bacteria or viruses, mages who specialize in healing couldn't fairly heal, from entering the body.

"Okay, wait a tad bit. I'll give it to you." Said the tavern maid.

With her request, I sat by the table seats and click my feet in a rythm I remember back on Earth. Glancing around, searching for Aira. Often than not, she would be here to woo some lads that is passing by.

It icks me to say that, but I guess its a norm here, and if I go by my standard like back on Earth, I'd die a lonely fool who's devoured by his own ego. The only chance I have is to get her attention until she accepts my hand in marriage even though I am yet to turn 18.

But after a few glance here and there, I didn't see her. So I assumed she got tired today and had helped her mother of some chores. A shame.

"Here's the mead." The tavern maid appear from the tavern house's door holding a jar made of clay. Judging by her look, its filled to the brim. "I believe it's paid?"

"Yes," I actually have no idea.

"Then here." As the tavern maid handed the mead, I notice her delicate hands stretching farther than it need be.

Her hands then reach for my palm and caress it gently. I looked at her confused, but truth be told, I know her intention.

"I apologize. My—"

"No need for an apology. It is simply an accident, right?"

"Yes. But if you wish..."

I wanna chuckle, but my discipline held it back. A fair maiden this shy is making her way onto me.

"We can meet at the hill. There's a stream out of the forest this evening." I suggested.

"Of course. Thanks Rudolf."

"No worries."

After that short conversation, I left the tavern's yard excited. I may have not seen my love but I did get something else.

And who am I to refuse such a generous offer? That tavern lady is strikingly beautiful. Not that everyone is below. She got this skin pale as a grain, her hair like a wheat and her eyes like the moon. She leans more on being adorable than sexy but... someone like that is tender.

But setting that aside for now, as I walk towards the house, I reminded myself of what I noticed. Since I find my consciousness in this person's body, I notice that... despite the ragged faces and features of the men, the beauty of the women is suspiciously exreaordinary.

As a person who's only been at the village, my information may be limited. But, according to the consensus I've done, out of the fifteen adult women in this village, all of them have this strikingly beautiful facial features.

Like, smooth jaw, delicate chin, and... an unnoticable asymmetry of their faces. They all look refined. Aira merely caught my eyes because of her red hair.

Anyways, I'm starting to sound like a pervert and I am already by our yard anyways.

"Father, I got your mead." I shouted since it seems my father is by the back.

"Put it in the chest inside."

I sigh and went inside the house. Tne house is... a house I guess. It has dirt floor, but we are villagers after all. The interior is narrow and enough to house two bedroom, a living room, and a storage room. By the attic is similar to a storage room but mostly for stuff not used.

I open the door of the living room and put the mead on the chess while thinking thoroughly. You see, I'm working on something. Something groundbreaking.

I did say I will be living a slow life here but I never mentioned of not improving it. So...

I close the chest and head to my room, its by the other side just in front of the living room's door. Space is narrow, but enough to have a set of table. There, I have coppers I improvised to be a coil.

It's circled for storage but not exactly for that purpose.

Then, I retrieved a magnet by the cardboard at the side. I'd imagine it be so rare but when my father and I went for the Edenburg city, we came across this shop that sells toy and I saw him demonstrating a magnetized rock. I asked for it and was able to get it for cheap since they don't exactly know its use.

After all, it is rare but unusable in low quantities. Their use can be done through cranes but their availability is not as much as the use for it or anything else except toy.

I held the magnet by my hand and massage my chin as smile etch in my face. Such irony that I thought of living a slow life.

This alone could ruin that.

But I have no intention of distributing this, this is merely a selfish work for my own. An experimentation that would probably half hearted like the ones I made before.

I stood from the desk and went outside. The sun is by west, which means it's near dusk so I hurried towards the improvised wind turbine by the backyard. The one I made a few months ago, taking some surplus wood I worked for.

I carried it and have it stood with its limbs. Now, it's looking like a proper electricity generator. It also started spinning from the breeze and I felt excited.

So, I held the rope attached by the head of the wind turbine and placed it around the copper. I intend to make it spin so it could generate an ounce of energy. The rest is for the future.

"RUDOLF! GET YOUR ASS HERE. I need four more batch of wood cut by until tonight!" My father's shout reverberated across the yard which prompted me to drop my equipment and ran towards him. I forgot about the job I was doing.
