Chapter 14 - The Transformation

Adrian and Dante dried her off with care, patting her skin gently instead of rubbing to avoid her hypersensitive skin. Lucien returned carrying pale blue cotton pajamas and fresh underwear.

They helped her dress, moving the clothes onto her skillfully, keeping her mostly covered with towels so she wasn't just standing there exposed.

Once she was finally dressed, Adrian carried her back to the bedroom where the bed had been fully remade while she was gone. The towels that had covered it during the fever were gone, replaced with clean sheets that smelled like vanilla.

He laid her down gently and adjusted the pillows, so her head and shoulders were slightly raised. Dante appeared beside the bed with a glass of water and a small bowl of broth.

"Try to drink some more," he instructed. "Your body needs fluids. And if you can handle a few sips of broth, that would be even better. The transformation will demand a lot from your body."

Lilian accepted the water first, managing several sips before her throat started to ache again. The broth was harder as her stomach resisted, but forced down a few spoonful anyway.

"That's enough," Dante said, not pushing for more. "You can rest now. Sleep if you can. When you wake up again, the transformation will likely be starting."

"How long?" Lilian rasped, the first words she had spoken since the fever broke.

"Until it starts? An hour. Maybe six. It varies," Dante explained, setting the bowl aside. "Until it's finished would be around three days. You'll be unconscious for most of it while your body shuts down everything that isn't essential while the change happens."

Three days of being totally helpless, of dying and being reborn as something fundamentally different, and completely at their mercy. She must have looked terrified, because Adrian sat on the edge of the bed and took her hand.

"We'll be here," he said firmly. "All of us. You won't be alone. We're going to watch over you and make sure everything goes right. You're going to make it, Lilian. I promise."

"And after? When I wake up as one of you?" she asked weakly.

"After that, the real work starts," Lucien said from where he was organizing medical supplies on the dresser. "We have to teach you control, how to feed without killing, managing bloodlust. How to use your strength without destroying everything around you. It'll take months, maybe a year, to fully adapt."

"One step at a time. First, survive the transformation. Everything else can wait," Dante said, his voice gentler than usual.

Lilian nodded weakly, too tired to argue or think about it further. Her eyes were already getting heavy despite having just woken up. The bath and the small amount of food had taken what little energy she had left.

"Sleep," Adrian said softly. "We'll wake you if anything changes. But for now, just rest."

Lilian let her eyes close, surrendering to the exhaustion pulling at her. She was dimly aware of movement around the room, those vampires were settling into their vigil, preparing for the long watch ahead.

Her last conscious thought was that at least she was clean. At least she would face the transformation in fresh clothes, in a clean bed, surrounded by people, even if they were vampires, who wanted her to live.

It wasn't much, but it was all she had.

——

The transformation started 3 hours after midday, nearly six hours after the fever had finally broken. Lilian was deep in exhausted sleep when the first convulsion tore through her body.

Her back arched off the bed, every muscle in her body going rigid simultaneously. A strangled sound came from her throat, not quite a scream, more like a shocked gasp dragged out by pain.

"It's starting," Dante said sharply. "Her temperature's rising again. Forty degrees and climbing fast."

Lilian's eyes snapped open to find all three vampires surrounding the bed, looking focused and alert. She realized they must have been sitting there for hours, just watching her sleep and waiting for this exact moment.

Another convulsion wracked her body, stronger than the first. Pain exploded through her, felt deeper than the burning heat of the fever, like every single cell was being ripped apart and put back together at the same time.

"Make it stop," she gasped, her fingers clawing at the sheets. "Please… make it stop…"

"We can't. It has to happen. But we can help manage the pain. Lucien, sedative. We'll put her under so she doesn't have to be conscious for this."

"No…" she gasped, managed to say through gritted teeth. "You said… no drugs…"

"That was for the fever," Dante corrected. "This is different. You don't need to be awake for this part. Please, Lilian. Let use make this easier for you."

Another wave of pain crashed through her, and this time she did scream. The sound tore from her damaged throat, raw and agonizing.

"Please," Adrian said urgently, his cool hand resting steadily on her forehead. "Let us help you. You've been so strong through the fever. You don't have to suffer through this too."

She wanted to refuse and stay awake, to hold onto control of her own mind. But then another convulsion hit, and the pain became so overwhelming that she couldn't think or even breathe, couldn't do anything except exist in pure agony.

"Okay," she gasped. "Okay, yes, please…"

Lucien was already there with a syringe. "This will work fast," he said, finding a vein in her arm then sliding the needle in. "You'll feel sleepy withing seconds. Just let go. We've got you."

She felt the tiny pinch of the needle, and then a wave of warmth spread through her body. It was gentle, drowsy warmth that made her limbs feel heavy.

"That's it," Adrian's voice sounded like it was coming from miles away. "Just relax. Let it take you. We're here. You're safe."

Her vision blurred, the vampires' faces drifting in and out of focus. The pain was still there, still intense, but it felt distant now, muffled by the drugs pulling her under.

The last thing she heart was Dante's voice. "Transformation confirmed. Three days until she emerges. Starting the full monitoring protocol now."

Then the darkness claimed her whole, and Lilian let go, surrendering to the transformation process that would end her life as a human forever.
