Chapter 5 - Chapter 5•Trial of the fates

The valley's mists hung low that morning, curling around jagged cliffs like silver snakes. Ash rubbed her arms, feeling the chill creep into her bones. She had hoped the crystal would give her some guidance, but it pulsed faintly, almost impatiently, as if urging her forward.

Ren, as always, was calm, his white robes blending into the pale mist. He surveyed the landscape with a predator's focus, sword ready. Ash couldn't help but notice the way his posture demanded attention, the quiet authority that made her pulse skip.

"You know," Ash said, breaking the silence, "I think we're walking straight into trouble."

Ren glanced at her, unimpressed. "That's usually the case when you're involved."

Ash laughed, though a little nervously. "Ha. Funny. I should charge you for emotional trauma at this rate."

Ren's lips twitched slightly—almost a smile. He said nothing.

Entering the Trial

Ahead, the valley opened into a wide circular arena of jagged stones. At its center, a glowing portal shimmered with silver-blue energy. Shadows swirled inside it like liquid smoke.

"This," Ren said, voice low, "is your first true fate trial. The crystal is a key, but only if you trust your instincts… and me."

Ash's pulse quickened. "Great. So I'm supposed to trust the stoic sword boy with all the life-or-death stuff. Perfect."

Ren's eyes narrowed. "This isn't a joke. Step wrong and… well, don't."

Ash grinned. "I know, I know. No pressure."

First Clash

The moment Ash stepped through the portal, the arena shifted. The ground beneath them cracked, glowing lines forming intricate patterns. From the cracks emerged monstrous creatures—fiends born of spiritual energy, their forms writhing like smoke given shape.

Ash instinctively raised her hands, feeling her mark flare with golden light. The shadows recoiled, hissing.

Ren's sword blazed to life with golden energy. "Stay close! Do not engage unless I give the signal."

Ash rolled her eyes but obeyed. "Yes, yes. Keep your precious sword between me and death."

Ren's movements were a blur of precision. Each swing cut through a fiend, leaving arcs of golden light in the air. Ash, heart pounding, realized she could now channel her crystal energy into rudimentary shields and bursts. It wasn't perfect, but it was enough to protect her—barely.

A fiend lunged at her from the side. Ash barely had time to react, and a golden flash intercepted it mid-air.

"Ren!" she shouted.

"You're reckless!" he barked, but there was no anger—only exasperation. "Focus on your surroundings, not your ego!"

Ash smirked. "Yes, sir. But I like living on the edge, you know?"

A Moment of Vulnerability

The fight raged, but Ash noticed something new: the more they moved in tandem, the stronger her energy felt. It was as if their fates—him and her—were amplifying each other.

At one point, a fiend managed to land a blow near her shoulder. Ash stumbled, vision blurring. Ren's hand shot out, catching her wrist before she fell. His grip was firm, steady… and too close.

Ash's heart raced. "You know," she muttered, "you really need to learn personal space."

Ren's eyes flicked toward her, calm yet intense. "Space won't save you from fate."

Ash could only blink. Fate… and him… she thought. Great. So now I'm going to die and fall in love at the same time.

Ren Breaks the Rules

Suddenly, the fiends surged in unison, a wave of pure dark energy. Ren moved to intercept them, but Ash's shield faltered. One fiend lunged at her, claws aimed to tear.

Ren hesitated, even though he knew the heavenly rules: no mortal could interfere directly beyond their trial limit, or punishment would come swiftly. Yet without warning, he lunged forward, blade glowing, and struck the fiend down just as it was about to hit Ash.

Ash's eyes went wide. "Ren! Do you… know what you just did?"

"I do," he said, voice calm but his eyes sharp. "And I don't care. You survive, that's all that matters."

Ash could barely process it. "You… broke the rules for me."

Ren said nothing more. He just sheathed his sword and motioned for her to keep moving. Ash felt a strange warmth, her pulse racing. So… he cares. He actually cares.

Aftermath and Foreshadowing

When the last fiend dissolved into mist, the arena grew still. The portal shimmered faintly before closing, leaving only the glowing patterns on the stone floor. Ash collapsed to her knees, breathing heavily.

Ren approached, hand hovering near her shoulder. "Are you unharmed?"

"I… I think so," Ash said, still dazed. She glanced at him. "But… that was… insane. You could be punished for that, you know."

Ren's gaze was unreadable. "I know. And if it comes, I'll accept it. But it won't change what's necessary."

Ash swallowed. The weight of his words settled on her like a physical thing. She looked down at her chest, at the mark pulsing in sync with her heartbeat. We are bound. There's no turning back now.

She looked up at Ren, a teasing smirk forming despite herself. "So… does this mean I owe you my life now?"

Ren's lips twitched. "Only if you survive the next trial."

Ash groaned. "Figures. Fate really loves making my life difficult, doesn't it?"

Ren didn't answer. He simply looked toward the horizon, sword in hand, and Ash realized… whatever awaited them, they would face it together.
