Chapter 208 - Suguha's Unease

[Protection Against Arrows: Makes the opponent's long-range attacks unable to hit.]

Looking at the three newly added icons in the system's item inventory, Hiro felt a trace of helplessness.

One of them was useless.

One looked quite useful.

The last one was probably somewhat useful.

That was his rough evaluation.

The Bloodline was out of the question. He had no intention of using it.

The Yata Mirror, as a Sacred Gear with growth potential and a direct connection to Susanoo, was something worth looking forward to in the future, regardless of its current state.

That left [Protection Against Arrows].

If it truly only worked against arrows, then it would be completely useless.

Especially for him, who already possessed the [Authority of the Sun: Leo].

However, the wording "long-range attacks" somewhat made up for the lack of coverage against magic and energy-type attacks in his so-called "invulnerability."

It wasn't perfect.

But it wasn't meaningless either.

While his attention was still slightly distracted by the system inventory, Kirigaya Suguha walked over.

She was wearing her Kuoh Academy Middle School uniform.

Her expression was hesitant.

"Onii-chan, that..."

"Suguha, what's wrong?"

Seeing her hesitation, Hiro smiled gently.

It was a calm, familiar smile.

Kirigaya Suguha's uneasy heart settled a little.

"Well, it's about my..."

She glanced at the people around them.

Then she leaned down and whispered into Hiro's ear.

"I think there's something wrong with my body. Could I trouble Onii-chan to take a look?"

The moment the words left her mouth, Suguha stiffened.

Doesn't that sound strange?

What if Onii-chan misunderstands it as that?

That time of the month?

How embarrassing.

When she straightened up, the possible ambiguity finally hit her.

Her face froze.

Body?

Hearing those suggestive words, Hiro raised an eyebrow.

His thoughts moved quickly.

Considering the timing, Suguha had just turned thirteen a little over two months ago.

Was it too early?

Or too late?

And more importantly, why wouldn't she go to Aunt Midori, Aunt Yasuko, or even Rias for something like this?

Why come to him?

He was a grown man.

Was she seeking comfort?

That didn't fit Suguha's personality.

She wasn't that type of girl.

Hiro nodded.

There were too many people around to talk openly.

Without saying much, he stood up, took Suguha's small hand, and led her upstairs toward her room.

If it was what he was imagining, going to his own room wouldn't be appropriate.

After all.

Who knew who might be hiding there right now.

Bang.

Click.

He closed the door and locked it.

Then, for good measure, he set up a soundproof barrier.

Strictly speaking, even if this were an ordinary matter, the way he was handling it would still make others suspicious.

Holding Suguha's hand gently, the two of them sat down naturally on the bed.

The room was filled with a distinctly girlish atmosphere.

Hiro looked at her and spoke in the gentlest tone he could manage.

"Suguha, what exactly is wrong with your body?"

"Well..."

She didn't answer immediately.

She extended the hand that wasn't being held to her side.

Her eyes closed.

She seemed to be concentrating.

A few seconds passed.

A mysterious light, mixed with green and gold, suddenly flashed in her right palm.

Then-

An unsheathed katana appeared in front of Hiro.

The blade was predominantly black.

The handle was green.

A golden fairy was carved into the blade itself.

Hiro fell silent.

"It's this."

With her left hand still held by Hiro, Suguha lightly swung the object in her right hand.

Anxiety showed on her face.

"This afternoon, during kendo practice, my right hand suddenly felt hot. Then this thing appeared. I don't know what it is, or why it has anything to do with me."

She swallowed.

"Luckily, no one noticed at the time, so it didn't cause any trouble."

But the fear lingered.

Being taken away by the police for possessing a restricted weapon.

Rumors spreading at school.

Being labeled a delinquent.

Or worse.

Her brother misunderstanding her.

Those possibilities alone were enough to make her uneasy.

If it was Onii-chan...

He seemed to know a lot about strange things.

Aliens.

Superpowers.

Things like that.

He should be able to understand something like this.

"Onii-chan."

She looked at him, eyes searching.

"What is this thing? Do you know?"

Hiro nodded calmly.

His expression was steady.

"I do."

"I've seen this kind of thing more than once."

So my sister awakened a Sacred Gear.

Well.

In this world, that wasn't surprising.

Not surprising at all.

"That's great!"

Seeing that he didn't react strangely, Suguha finally let out a sigh of relief.

Her shoulders relaxed.

Even her voice became lighter.

"This thing," Hiro continued casually, "is an item once created by the single God of the Bible mythology. Yahweh. Also called God."

"It's generally known as a 'Sacred Gear.'"

"An artifact created by a god."

He paused, making sure she was listening.

"Its purpose is to give weak humans the chance to resist fallen angels, Asuras, gods, devils, and monsters."

"So humans don't become nothing more than lambs waiting to be slaughtered."

He finished the explanation simply.

Looking at Suguha's stunned expression, Hiro felt a bit helpless.

It seemed he really needed to start from the beginning.

"Gods... Asuras... Fallen Angels..."

Suguha was silent for a few seconds.

Then she spoke.

"Is the world really that dangerous?"

Yes.

It is.

And beyond this planet, there are even more dangerous races waiting.

But that was far too much for her.

Hiro had no intention of telling an underage girl things at that level.

He limited himself to basic, surface-level common knowledge.

That included the true identities of the people currently living in their home.

"Dangerous?" Hiro said. "Not really."

"It's actually fine."

"After all, there's no reason for them to slaughter humans without cause."

"For example."

"Rias. Akeno. Koneko. Asia. Xenovia. And Sona's student council members."

"They're all devils."

"Among them, only Sona and Rias are pure-blooded devils. The rest are reincarnated devils."

He continued calmly.

"Irina is an angel."

"She's currently a two-winged angel."

After the Three Factions Conference ended, Irina had been entrusted by Michael with the role of a "liaison."

She was dispatched to the Kirigaya household.

Hiro's earlier display of power was more than enough to warrant serious attention from the angels.

From all three factions, in fact.

Showing goodwill toward him was only natural.

As for whether Michael's true purpose was really just "liaison"-

That was another matter entirely.
