Seeing that August-the terrorist-had come specifically for her, Grayfia showed neither panic nor surprise. She maintained her composure and slowly stepped forward.
"Grayfia Lucifer. I am currently the Maou of the Devil race."
"Coming for Lucifer?"
Azazel, who had been ignored by August, was unwilling to stay silent. He looked at Grayfia with a mocking expression.
"Those three up there are also from the Old Maou faction. They're probably seeking revenge over the Maou position. So what-did the Angels and Fallen Angels get dragged into an internal Devil conflict?"
"Although I've heard that the current Lucifer is extremely annoyed by political affairs, I never imagined you'd go so far as to tamper with the memories of the leaders of the Three Factions just to avoid showing up yourself."
Azazel clicked his tongue.
"Isn't that a bit excessive, Lucifer?"
Despite the scolding tone, neither Azazel's expression nor his posture showed any real intent to reprimand.
Whether it was because August stood before them-or because Azazel was simply teasing-was unclear.
"Regarding that matter."
Grayfia glanced coldly at Azazel's mocking smile and spoke flatly.
"If Governor Azazel has any dissatisfaction, we can discuss it privately."
The instant Grayfia's icy gaze swept over him, Azazel's smile froze in place.
Privately?
How exactly?
If I'm not mistaken, that's a discussion conducted with force, right?
An existence more monstrous than monsters themselves. Someone who defeated the other three Maous-including that monster Sirzechs-in a three-on-one battle.
If you're unhappy and want a "private discussion," just say you want to cut me down.
Knowing that as long as Grayfia was present his safety wasn't truly at risk, Azazel quickly raised both hands in a certain country's standard military surrender salute.
"Azazel, you're so weak."
Nearby, Serafall-still in her magical girl outfit-covered her mouth and laughed.
"Then, August-dono."
Grayfia shifted her attention away from the farce and looked directly at the elderly magician with long, graying hair before her.
"What business do you have with me?"
Throughout the exchange between Grayfia and Azazel, August had watched silently, showing no sign of displeasure.
Hearing her question, he did not immediately state his purpose.
"I came here only to confirm one thing with Lucifer-dono."
"I have no intention of intervening in the conflict between the Khaos Brigade and the Three Factions."
He paused briefly.
"The young man I banished to the future will automatically return in one hour."
After another short pause, he added,
"Of course, that is assuming he does not accidentally die in that era."
The future.
Accidental death.
Hearing this, Rias frowned slightly, worry surfacing despite herself.
She knew nothing about the future. And for Hiro-who was there now-worry was the only way she could show concern.
"Hiro-kun..."
Asia's face was also filled with unease.
"Don't worry, Asia."
Xenovia placed a hand on her shoulder and spoke quietly, her tone firm.
"Hiro is the man we've set our sights on. He won't die so easily."
"Confirm?"
Grayfia frowned faintly at August's words, not fully understanding his intent.
In the distant sky, Sirzechs and Michael were close to finishing off the three devils of the Old Maou faction.
Grayfia did not reject August's request.
"Unless it's a critical question, I don't mind answering."
"That's good, but..."
August glanced at Azazel, Serafall, Rias, and the others nearby. Then he fell silent and activated Thought Transmission magic.
"How about we communicate this way?"
"Please."
Grayfia didn't speak aloud either. She simply nodded slightly and transmitted her voice into August's mind.
"First, I want to ask you this, Lucifer-dono."
"Have you ever traveled to other worlds? I don't mean places like the Human World or Heaven, but truly different dimensions."
"Yes."
Though her brows knit together slightly, Grayfia answered without hesitation.
"Then, do you have a method to travel to other worlds?"
"I won't hide it from you. I am a magician from another world."
"It was only because I noticed-through certain rumors within the Three Factions-that you might have traveled to other worlds as well, that I seized this opportunity to find you."
"So, may I ask-"
Even without sound, Grayfia could feel the excitement in August's heart through the fluctuations of his transmitted "voice."
Does he still have someone waiting for him in another world?
As the thought crossed her mind, Grayfia's wariness toward August quietly faded.
Both had crossed worlds.
Both had emotional ties beyond this one.
The difference was that one endured a painful wait, while the other continued a difficult search.
In August, Grayfia faintly saw her own reflection.
"I'm sorry."
"I was only able to return from the other world with the help of someone else."
"I do not possess any method to travel to-or return from-other worlds."
"Thank you for your answer."
After a few seconds of silence, August spoke slowly.
I only seek to return.
That is all.
In Grayfia's eyes, August-already far from young-seemed even more aged than before. His tone carried an unmistakable trace of helplessness.
"Well then."
"Since my objective has been achieved, I will take my leave."
"Until we meet again, Grayfia Lucifer-dono."
August bowed slightly toward her. Then his staff tapped the ground.
Dong.
A bright yellow magic circle spread beneath his feet.
Grayfia recognized it at once-a teleportation-type formation.
"Safe travels, August-dono."
The light flared.
And then, he was gone.
