Chapter 7 - The Alpha’s Territory

The city glittered below them, lights spilling across the skyline like spilled jewels, but Shen Yaojin didn't notice any of it. He was too busy staring at the ballroom in front of him—the endless suits and dresses, the murmurs that floated like smoke, and Lu Zhiyuan beside him, composed as ever, hand brushing lightly along Yaojin's lower back. Not affectionate, not protective. Territorial.

I hate how my chest tightens around him, Yaojin thought, jaw clenched. I hate how it makes me feel… like I belong here.

He forced himself to take a slow breath, adjusting his jacket, pretending that he was calm. That he didn't care. But every step toward the gala felt heavier, like the air itself was conspiring to remind him that this wasn't his world—yet somehow, he could never quite escape it when Zhiyuan was near.

Lin Meiqi was waiting. As expected. Yaojin didn't flinch—he had already faced her once at the beach and again at the office—but the sharp tilt of her smile still made his stomach knot.

"Zhiyuan," she purred, voice smooth, practiced. "I see you brought… him."

Yaojin's lips curved into a smile so faint it could've been a snarl. "Yes. I'm his husband."

The words hung between them like steel. Lin Meiqi's expression didn't falter, but her eyes flickered—annoyance, calculation, maybe even a hint of something else he couldn't quite name.

Zhiyuan's gaze was calm, almost lazy, but the faint narrowing of his eyes told Yaojin everything he needed to know: She's testing us. And I don't let anyone test mine.

The night passed in a blur of greetings, champagne clinks, and endless polite smiles. Yaojin's nerves were taut, his body aware of every movement Zhiyuan made beside him. Every brush of fabric, every angle of the alpha's wrist near his own—it was all deliberate, dominant, claiming. And Yaojin… well, he was supposed to act indifferent, but the truth was he wasn't sure he could.

I'm supposed to hate him, he thought. This is fake, right? It's all a contract…

But when Zhiyuan leaned slightly closer in a crowded room, a whisper brushing past Yaojin's ear, heat coiled tight in his stomach. Fake? He laughed dryly in his mind. Sure.

Later, on the balcony, Yaojin exhaled sharply, letting the night air cool the flush on his face. He thought he'd be safe out here, away from the noise, away from Lin Meiqi's calculating eyes.

"Not safe," Zhiyuan said, voice low, stepping out from the shadow beside him.

Yaojin stiffened. "You always appear out of nowhere."

"I notice everything about what's mine," Zhiyuan replied, hand brushing near Yaojin's wrist—not fully touching, just hovering, teasing, dangerous.

Perfect. Yaojin's heart thudded painfully. This is where the heat starts…

He tried to pull back. "I don't belong to you."

Zhiyuan's lips curved, but his eyes were storm-dark. "Not yet," he said.

The tension was unbearable. Yaojin's chest felt tight, mind spinning. The world outside—the city lights, the gala—ceased to exist. All that remained was Zhiyuan, his presence, his scent, the unspoken claim that made Yaojin's pulse race.

Meanwhile, across town, Han Zexu still worked late at Bai Group. Papers spread across the desk, screen glowing. Bai Lianyi appeared quietly, coffee in hand, expression unreadable.

"You're still here," Lianyi said.

"I wanted to finish the analysis," Zexu replied, forcing calm.

Lianyi leaned against the desk, studying him. "Most omegas avoid high-pressure environments."

"I'm not most omegas," Zexu shot back, chin high.

Lianyi's lips curved into a faint smile. "Good. I hate most people."

Something shifted in the room. Something unspoken, something that hinted at the slow burn that would follow—tension, possession, and the promise that the alpha was watching the omega more closely than anyone else knew.

Back at the gala, Lin Meiqi made her move again, slipping close to Zhiyuan as Yaojin pretended not to notice.

"You always like control," she said softly.

Zhiyuan's gaze flicked to Yaojin, then back to her, calm but lethal. "And you always liked testing it. Stay away from him."

Yaojin's chest tightened. The possessiveness in Zhiyuan's voice made his heart jump and something else coil deep in his stomach—a combination of fear, thrill, and reluctant craving.

Mine. The word was unspoken, but Yaojin felt it as if Zhiyuan had tattooed it across his chest.

Night fell. Back at the mansion, Yaojin found himself wandering the quiet halls, unable to sleep. He paused outside Zhiyuan's room.

I'm not… clingy, he told himself. I'm just… thinking.

But when the door opened and Zhiyuan appeared, tired but perfect, Yaojin's resolve wavered.

"Yes?" Zhiyuan's voice was calm.

"I—couldn't sleep," Yaojin said, pretending casualness.

Zhiyuan stepped aside, allowing him in. The room smelled like him, like dominance, like danger, and Yaojin couldn't help the flush creeping up his neck.

"You're acting strange," Zhiyuan said softly.

"Define strange," Yaojin replied, trying to hide his rapid heartbeat.

"You came to my room voluntarily," Zhiyuan said, stepping closer.

"Don't get ideas," Yaojin muttered, but the words sounded hollow even to him.

Zhiyuan's hand brushed his hair, thumb grazing his temple. "Too late."

Perfect fade-to-black moment. The tension is at its peak. All emotions, possessiveness, and danger are here. You can expand this privately later.

Yaojin eventually left the room, chest still tight, mind still spinning. He was supposed to be the one in control of his emotions. But Zhiyuan… Zhiyuan had a way of unbalancing him without touching him, without needing anything more than presence and dominance.
