Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: To home

The sword stopped right at his neck; he felt the cold side of the metal cooling his neck, just millimetres away from slicing it off. "I... I surrender". grasped the boy, who then fell with sweat dripping from his forehead and with his hand touching his neck, perhaps to assure himself that he still had a neck. I then put the sword away in my scabbard

"Well done", said the instructor without an ounce of emotion. "That concludes the 45th fight of the academy tournament".

Ring. Ring. The bell rang. It was time for lunch, the only time of the day I look forward to. Everyone started to leave, to go to the cafeteria. I too walked slowly towards the cafeteria from the training ground, filled with dirt and chaos.

I pushed the door open and entered a place teeming with benches and noise. I went to the front and took my usual order of meat pasta and returned to my usual place at the corner, which is lonely but peaceful.

Savouring the pasta gently, I relished in the flavour and the meaty aftertaste. After I finished my meal, I left the cafeteria quickly. Class finished early today, and I have to go home. Painfully and slowly, I walked through the long corridors with fluorescent lighting while looking down at the creaking floor. Haa. Haa. Haa. My lungs were quickly inhaling and exhaling air. Truly, I hate this, and I am tired. But I have to go home

My brothers are traitors in this country, this nation. They were good, nice and very talented. I am nothing like them, no matter how hard I try, how much I steel myself, I am not as talented. What more can I do? I want to sleep. I am tired.

I am walking without energy towards home. I can't afford a carriage, so I have to walk for at least 2 hours to reach my house near the outskirts of the Pala kingdom's capital. I finally reached my house, it's sad as ever. A two-story dipladiated building where dust is clinging like two lovers during their honeymoon. The windows are shut since more than half have cracks and missing panels. Uncut weeds are all around the building, making it seem like an abandoned home. But I live here. I smile painfully, truly fitting, an abandoned home for an abandoned girl.

I went towards the old wooden door. Then the door creaks open, and a warm, melodic tone welcomes me.
