Chapter 259 - Chapter 257: The Godfather Bond

Cassius crouched down and checked the Porsche's tires. The left rear one that had skidded showed fresh wear marks, and it was still hot to the touch. The brakes carried a sharp burned smell.

"How long since this thing had a full service?" he asked Roger.

Roger finally came back to himself, his voice shaky. "Last month. I had it serviced last month."

"Brake pads are shot, and the tires need balancing," Cassius said, standing up. He glanced at the empty stretch of road. "This kind of car doesn't belong on pavement this old. Too many little surprises."

Paul walked over and clapped him on the shoulder. "Thanks, man."

Cassius shook his head. "Anyone would've done the same."

Roger climbed out on shaky legs. "I almost killed you."

"We're all still here," Paul said, pulling him into a quick hug.

The other car guys finally got out and gathered around, asking what had happened. Cassius kept it simple, blaming the road surface. No need to embarrass Roger in front of everyone.

On the drive back, Cassius made Paul ride with him in the crew car. The Mercedes hummed along through the dark. Paul stayed quiet for a long stretch, still processing everything.

Back at the charity lot, the event had already wrapped. Only a few staff members were left packing up.

Paul and Roger headed inside with the remaining guys. Cassius sat in the car and watched them go. He didn't start the engine right away. The weight that had been sitting on his chest for years finally eased.

He drove back to the hotel in silence. The second he hit the bed he was out. For the first time in weeks, he slept without waking up every hour.

The next morning on the Fast 7 set, the mood felt different. People weren't joking around like usual. They stood in small groups, talking low. When Cassius walked in, conversations stopped and everyone turned to look at him.

Vin was the first to reach him. He grabbed Cassius by the shoulders and gave him a hard shake. "Paul told us what happened last night."

Michelle pulled him into a quick hug. "Jesus, Cass. You could've all been gone."

"I'm fine. Paul's fine," Cassius said, gently pushing her back. She smelled like motor oil and adrenaline.

Justin Lin came over from the monitors, looking serious. "Paul called me this morning. He walked me through the whole thing. Said if you hadn't been there, that Porsche would've gone straight into the guardrail. You saved his life, Cass."

Everyone around them murmured in agreement.

Paul walked onto the set a minute later. He looked tired, dark circles under his eyes, but he was steady. He came straight to Cassius and stuck out his hand. They gripped forearms hard.

"Thanks, bro," Paul said quietly.

The whole set felt the weight of it.

During breaks, people kept pulling Cassius aside to hear the story. How he spotted the road issue. How he knew the car was about to lose it. What the hell that side-tap move even was. He answered every question until his throat went dry.

At lunch Vin sat down across from him with his tray. "Cass, I've been thinking. Meadow's five now, right? You saved her dad's life."

Cassius looked up. "Yeah."

Vin leaned in. "In this business we've got a word for that kind of thing."

Cassius waited.

"Godfather," Vin said.

The tables around them went quiet.

Paul set his fork down and thought for a second. Then he smiled. "I like it. Cass, you up for it?"

Cassius stared at both of them. He knew what the word meant out here. It wasn't just a title. It was a lifetime promise to look out for the kid.

He didn't need long to decide.

"I'm in," he said.

Paul's grin widened. "When we wrap, I'll bring her out. We'll make it official. Cameras and everything. I want everyone to know my daughter's got Cassius watching her back."

Three weeks later they wrapped Fast 7. Justin Lin stood up after the last take and looked around the quiet set.

"This one's been special," he said. "Especially for Paul."

Everyone turned to look at Paul. The applause lasted a long time.

The wrap party was set up right on the lot. Food, drinks, music. But the real moment came in the afternoon when Paul's wife Rebecca brought Meadow out.

The little girl wore a white dress and had her hair in pigtails. She ran straight to Paul. He picked her up and carried her to the middle of the cleared space where the cameras were already rolling.

"Today we finished the movie," Paul told the small crowd. "But there's something else I want to do. A few weeks ago I came this close to losing everything. Cassius pulled us back from the edge. So today I'm making it official."

He set Meadow down and crouched beside her. "Baby, you remember Cassius?"

She nodded. "He took us to Disney."

Paul smiled. "Would you like him to be your godfather? That means he'll always look out for you, the same way I do."

Meadow looked at Cassius for a second, then grinned. "Okay."

Paul stood up and faced Cassius. "Cass, will you be Meadow's godfather? Promise to love her, guide her, and protect her?"

"I will," Cassius said.

They kept it simple. Meadow placed her small hand in Cassius's. He gave her a little wooden bead bracelet that matched the one Sangye had given him, just sized for a kid. The cameras caught every second.

That night the story was everywhere.

"Paul Walker Names Cassius Godfather to His Daughter"

"From Co-Star to Family: Cassius Earns Hollywood's Ultimate Trust"

Social media went wild. People called it a real Hollywood moment. Some pointed out how rare it was for an Asian actor to be pulled that deep into the inner circle. Others just said it was beautiful.

A few bitter comments popped up on the usual forums, but they got buried fast under waves of support.

Cassius didn't post anything. He just watched the little girl run around the party wearing the bracelet he'd given her and felt something settle in his chest.

Later that night Paul found him sitting off to the side.

"You good?" Paul asked.

Cassius nodded. "Yeah. Just thinking."

Paul sat down next to him. "I meant what I said. You're family now. For real."

Cassius looked over at Meadow, already half asleep on a couch with the bracelet still on her wrist.

"I know," he said quietly. "And I've got her."

A couple days later Cassius stood in the hallway of a big VFX house that had worked on everything from Titanic to the Transformers movies. Coffee and server heat filled the air.

He pushed open the door to the main suite. Eight big monitors lined one wall, all showing shots from The Ancient One. Hand seals, energy effects, the whole works.

The lead supervisor, a tired-looking British guy named David, stood up fast. "Cassius. Thank God you're here. We're stuck on the magic."

Cassius pulled up a chair. "Show me what you've got."

David pulled up three versions of the Vishanti shield. One was plain gold. One had floating sparkles. One tried to add moving runes but they looked like cheap stickers.

"None of them feel alive," David admitted.

Cassius studied the screens. "Because you're treating magic like a visual effect instead of something that breathes."

He leaned forward and started explaining exactly how the shield should look and move, pulling from everything he'd seen in the dream instance and on set. The team gathered around, taking notes while he talked.

For the first time in weeks, the work felt right again.
